    Pizza Capital of the World

Caroline Strasser is a writer and editor based in New York City.Old Forge is known as the ″true″ pizza capital of the world, and with good reason.Almost everyone agrees that either New York style or Chicago style pizza is the greatest type of pizza to be found when it comes to finding the best pizza around.

Residents of a borough in northern Pennsylvania, on the other hand, might say that both fell short of their own aesthetic standards. With its location between two mountain ranges in a remote area that is foreign to most people, Old Forge (located in the southern region of Lackawant lan County) boldly proclaims itself to be the ″Pizza Capital of the World.″ Old Forge has undoubtedly created a reputation for itself in the pizza-loving community, thanks to its original family recipes, ″like home″ ambiance where ″everyone knows your name,″ and a distinct, unrivaled taste that is hard to find anywhere else.Walking along Main Avenue in Old Forge is the first indication that this little municipality takes its status as a hotspot for pizza seriously.

    1. Family businesses such as Arcaro & Genell’s, Revello’s Pizza Café, and Salerno’s Café can be found on both sides of the avenue, each proudly displaying their unique combination of cheeses and sauces that distinguishes their pizza from the competition.
    2. As a matter of fact, there are so many pizzerias in the area that the population to restaurant ratio is around 700 to 1.
    3. In addition, signage announcing Old Forge as the ″Pizza Capital of the World″ can be found around the borough, confirming the designation.
    4. Generally speaking, the interior of most of the restaurants in Old Forge is the same: a dimly lit dining area with aged wooden tables and chairs, a few wooden booths along one wall, a bar where the food is just as important as the drinks, and memorabilia adorning the walls, celebrating the history of the restaurant as well as the history of Old Forge itself.
    5. There is also a swinging door, which with each swing open provides a burst of brilliant light and the fragrances of cheese, sauce, and dough as they come together to create the town’s hallmark pie.
    6. All of this contributes to the welcoming atmosphere that restaurants strive to achieve; they want you to come in and enjoy the cuisine and company.
    1. Jennifer Snyder is a woman who works in the fashion industry.
    2. Arcaro & Genell is just one of the several places in Old Forge that cater to this popular local delicacy.
    3. In fact, this atmosphere has virtually invariably persisted throughout the long histories of the restaurants in question.
    4. In addition to serving as a dining establishment, the restaurants also served as a shelter for miners fleeing the harshness of their working conditions.
    5. Following World War II, this was a necessity that was felt more than ever in the late 1940s.

Old Forge and the neighboring settlements were greatly reliant on the quantity of coal and the jobs that went along with it for their survival. As the United States began to transition away from coal, employment began to disappear from the region.Because the area’s huge immigrant population had nothing else to do, they would go to their favorite eateries and get a plate of pizza to take home with them.Ghigiarelli’s Restaurant in Old Forge is credited as being the first restaurant in the area to serve pizza, which occurred in the 1920s.

    1. A group of miners is said to have gone to the restaurant after a long day’s labor to play cards and have something to eat, according to the locals.
    2. ‘Grandma’ Ghigiarelli, as she was affectionately called, responded to their summons by filling a baking tray (rather than the typical circular pizza pan) halfway with pizza dough and topping it with vegetables from the garden, cheese, and seasonings.
    3. Grandma Ghigiarelli prepared a delicious meal for the miners, which they devoured after a short time in the restaurant’s brick oven.
    1. When Ghigiarelli’s pizza became popular, other restaurants in the region took note, and they began creating their own original versions in order to attract the miners and other employees.
    2. After spending their days at the restaurants preparing trays of pizzas, the women would return home to feed their hungry families and coworkers who had arrived to partake in the dinner.
    3. While each restaurant had its own unique blends of cheeses and sauces, they all had two things in common: they always made sure the crust was perfect, and they always baked the pizza on a rectangular tray to prevent the pizza from falling apart.
    4. As time went on, certain pizza recipes got more popular than others, and some became more popular than others.

Some variants ask for more sauce, while others call for more cheese, and still others call for specific toppings (such as ″black″ pizza, which is made with cheese, black pepper, olives, and anchovies, among other things). While everyone has their own personal tastes when it comes to pizza, the ″red″ pizza and the ″white″ pizza are the most common sorts to be found in Old Forge.KCH The bottom tray has red pizza, and the top tray contains white pizza.

    1. The dough for red pizza is made with the intention of rising to be about an inch thick.
    2. Spread on top of it is the restaurant’s original tomato sauce, which is then coated by a specific cheese blend and sprinkled with spices before being baked to perfection.
    3. White pizza recipes omit the sauce altogether, favoring a thicker, ″double crust,″ a slightly different cheese blend, and a coating of olive oil dusted with rosemary in place of it.
    4. However, while the recipes differ, both adhere to the same Old Forge pizza standards: the crusts must be exactly perfect, light and airy, and they must be baked on a rectangular baking pan, and nothing else, to achieve the best results.

One of the most interesting questions people have about pizza, regardless of the variation, is ″what makes it so good?″ What makes a pizza so delicious?Revello’s Pizza Café’s Andy Sopp, who has been preparing pizzas for more than 40 years, argues that ″it’s all about the cheese blend.″ The exact ingredients that go into any cheese blend found in Old Forge are still a bit of a mystery. Most eateries are protective of their mix since it is what distinguishes their pizzas from others. Many consumers believe that the mixes contain American cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, Provolone cheese, and Scamorza cheese (also known as ″scamutz″ in the local community).

    1. Most of the mixes are devoid of mozzarella, which is normally present on pizza served outside of the valley.
    2. Despite this, the cheese on the pizza is still well regarded.
    3. The following is what one Revello’s customer had to say: ″The cheese is really gooey and tasty, the sort that adheres to your teeth (in a good way).″ It appears that every restaurant leaves consumers satisfied and eager to return for more pizza.
    4. A large number of people travel from near and far to enjoy the pizza, whether it is the red, with its robust sauce, or the white, with its excellent dough.
    • Politicians Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have both visited Old Forge to eat pizza while campaigning in Pennsylvania.
    • The eateries, according to one satisfied client, have a ″’Hometown’ atmosphere,″ and he added, ″I’ve been coming here for 12 years and not much has changed in that 12 years.″ That is what the entire Old Forge community aims for: a small-town atmosphere complemented by delicious meals.
    • The small-town atmosphere is exemplified by the way the various eateries interact with one another.
    • The title of ″Best Pizza in the World″ in the Pizza Capital of the World may appear to be a profitable one, yet many of the eateries in the city are extremely cooperative and amicable to one another.
    • Owners are friendly with one another, and everyone will patronize one another’s establishments; in fact, some establishments actively promote together.
    • This might be due to the fact that many of the restaurant’s founding families can trace their roots back to Felitto, Italy, or it could simply be due to the desire of the establishments to be a part of a better community.
    • When asked which restaurant they think is the best, many employees remain humble.
    • ″It’s basically a question of personal preference,″ says Pat Revello, proprietor of Revello’s Café.
    • ″There is no such thing as a ‘best,’ since they are all ‘the greatest,’″ writes CNN travel writer Jill Dougherty.
    • Karen Christina Hibbard’s full name is Karen Christina Hibbard.
    • A panorama of pizza, with a close-up of a red pizza in Old Forge.
    • Because all of the restaurants in Old Forge are among the best in the country, it is easy to see why this hamlet is known as the ″Pizza Capital of the World.″ When people are asked where they get the greatest pizza, New York and Chicago are often the first places that come to mind, with Old Forge being a distant second.
    1. When the issue of which pizza community is the best arises, Old Forge is always at the top of the list.
    2. With a small-town ambiance, courteous service, and excellent pizza that can’t be found anywhere else, it’s evident that Old Forge is truly the Pizza Capital of the World.

The American pizza capital you’ve never heard of

The first place that comes to mind when you hear the phrase ″Pizza Capital of the World″ is…Is it possible to go to Naples, Italy?Brooklyn?

According to some, the little community of Old Forge, Pennsylvania, is the answer.(You’re forgiven for wondering, ″huh?″ at this point.) Despite the fact that the claim was made by the establishment itself, Old Forge has earned a solid reputation for its pizza.Located in Lackawant any County (five miles from Scranton) in Northeast Pennsylvania, the old mining town of around 8,000 people has a long history of coal mining and textile mills, but what it is most known for current days is its distinctive type of pizza.

    1. Instead of New York-style, Neapolitan, or deep dish — or any other style you may be familiar with — they have developed their own form of pizza that is truly unique.
    2. Ghigiarelli’s is widely regarded as the birthplace of the kind of pizza today known as Old Forge pizza.
    3. Apparently, in 1926, Grandma Ghigiarelli served a rectangular pizza to the miners who used to congregate at the tavern she and her husband owned and operated with their son.
    4. It was an immediate success.
    5. Old Forge pizza is now available at more than a dozen pizza cafés (as they’re known in the area) along Main Street in the town.
    6. Old Forge pizza is distinguished by a few significant characteristics.
    1. First and foremost, a full pizza is not referred to as a pie but rather as a tray – the pizza is baked on rectangular metal pans rather than pieces, and there are no slices, only cuts.
    2. Since 1962, Angelo Genell’s family has run Arcaro & Genell, one of the town’s most well-known pizza restaurants.
    3. ″Sometimes customers phone and request a pie, and we ask ‘Do you want apple or blueberry?’″ laughs Angelo, whose family has been in the pizza business since 1962.
    4. Old Forge pizza has a dough that is lighter than a conventional thick crust, crispy on the bottom with a chewy interior, and made with fresh ingredients.
    5. Pizza at Old Forge is available in two varieties: red and white.

In the case of red sauce, the sweetness is enhanced by the addition of sliced onions sometimes.Based on the restaurant, the cheese blend includes mozzarella, American, and cheddar cheeses as well as other varieties.A white pizza is packed and has a layer of dough on the top and bottom to hold it together.Ordinarily, herbs and thin slices of onion are used to coat the top layer of the pizza crust.

    1. There is no sauce on the inside; instead, there is a mountain of cheese plus any extra ingredients you like, such as spinach or broccoli.
    2. You’d think that with so many places to eat pizza, the cafés would be able to keep up with the competition.
    3. That is not the case.
    1. ″All of the businesses produce pretty amazing pizza,″ Genell adds of the dining options.
    2. ″You’ll have folks purchase pizza on Friday from one person, Saturday from someone else, and Tuesday from someone else,″ says the author.

The Pizza Capital of the World is Where?

Typically, when people think of pizza in America, they think of New York and its incredible slices, Chicago and their deep-dish delectability, and even Los Angeles and its ingeniously topped creations and notable Neapolitan’s.To learn that a little section of Pennsylvania may possibly be the pizza capital of the world may come as a huge surprise (as it did to us) may come as a major surprise to you (at least per capita).A little more than two hours west of Manhattan, Lackawant to County (population 214,000) is located in the northeastern section of Pennsylvania.

The history of the county, which is most known for its anthracite coal mines, is based on the migration of Italian immigrants who left New York in search of coal jobs in and around Scranton, the county’s largest city, throughout the nineteenth century.Nonni Ghigiarelli, a lady from Lackawant County, Pennsylvania, started making a unique type of pizza in 1926 to cater to the influx of Italian immigrants. This style of pizza is now known as Old Forge style, after the town where she lived at the time.

    1. Because it is baked in trays, Old Forge style is similar to its Sicilian counterparts.
    2. However, unlike its New York neighbors to the east, the individual portions of Old Forge style are referred to as ″cuts″ rather than ″slices.″ Grandma Ghigiarelli, on the other hand, is only the beginning of the narrative.
    3. The number of Old Forge-style pizzerias has increased dramatically since her illustrious beginnings in Pennsylvania.
    4. Currently, there are more than 150 pizzerias in the county alone, with nine of them located inside the historic district of Old Forge.
    5. Revello’s Due to the strange disappearance of its owner, the original Ghigiarelli’s Restaurant has sadly closed its doors, but there are still a plethora of wonderful choices where you can indulge in the light puffed crust with sweet tomato sauce, a variety of various cheeses, and sizzling white onions.
    6. Revello’s, Arcaro & Genell, Mary Lou’s Pizza, and Café Rinaldi are just a few of the most well-known pizza businesses in the area.
    1. Aside from the restaurants, the county hosts a couple of Italian festivals each year, during which there are several opportunities to sample Old Forge products.
    2. The most important event is La Festa Italiana, which takes place during Labor Day weekend and has 80 or so food booths serving up Italian favorites.
    3. In addition, there is Santo Ubaldo Day, which is celebrated solely in the Italian cities of Jessup, in Lackawant to County, and Gubbio, in the United States.
    4. The day is loaded with homemade Italian food, as well as a large number of Old Forge platters, just as La Festa Italiana.
    5. Salerno’s Café is a restaurant in Salerno, Italy.

Finally, in order to truly hammer home the fact that Lackawant to County is the self-proclaimed Pizza Capital of the World, the county is in the midst of developing a Pizza Trail.Locals of the county will be voting on the best pizzerias in Lackawant County, and the results will be used to create the ideal pizza crawl for residents and tourists to thoroughly enjoy. If you’re planning a pizza pilgrimage around America, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles are all must-stop destinations. The little county in northeast Pennsylvania with a style that is completely distinct and amazingly excellent, however, must not be overlooked if you truly want to cover the entire pizza range.

A Sicilian or Grandma style pizza is comparable to an Old Forge pizza in that it is founded in its Italian heritage (not deep-dish, different ball game). The red.

In the Old Forge style, a red pizza is a rectangular ″tray″ of pizza with a light and fluffy dough and a crispy bottom that is covered with sweet tomato sauce and cheeses and baked until golden brown. From location to location, the tightly guarded cheese blend comprises mixtures such as mozzarella, parmesan, and even American cheese (yes, even American!) This ″twist″ causes the cheese to become extra melty, resulting in the ideal taste every every time. They will delight in their topping alternatives, which are prepared from fresh and exotic ingredients such as sizzling onions, shrimp, and spicy peppers, among others.

    The white.

Typically, a ″cut of white″ is how you’d order a slice of white pizza in Old Forge; it’s double-crusted, sauceless, loaded with a mound of melting cheese, and topped with fresh herbs such as rosemary.Consider a grilled cheese sandwich built using pizza dough, and you’ll get a good idea of the style and consistency you’ll get here.Another possible explanation for this phenomenon is an open-faced calzone.

What Makes Old Forge Style Pizza Unique

Our own experience with Old Forge style pizza has led us to believe that it is truly unique and exceptional.. Things that look all too familiar on the surface, but are anything but, are what distinguishes it from the rest of the pack.

    The crust.

It is possible to have an inch-thick crust on Old Forge style pizza while yet maintaining a light and airy texture. With its pillowy texture and crunchy bottom, you’ll feel as if you could devour a whole tray of it by yourself without a second thought.

    The cheese.

The cheese mixes in Old Forge are holy and kept secret, but we can tell you that each restaurant creates its own, each with its own twists and turns on the classic recipe. Mozzarella and American cheese appear to be the main attractions here, but we’ll never know what amounts they’re in.

    How it is cut.

The wonderful thing about Old Forge style pizza, and the reason it deserves to be known as the ″Pizza Capital of the World,″ is that it is meant to be shared with others.A bar crowd, a family with children, or a group of friends getting together may have a full tray that comes with 12 cuts or a half tray that comes with 6 cuts, and everyone will be pleased with their meal. The slices are rectangular in shape, and there is enough diversity for both crust fans and crust haters to be satisfied.

Pizza Places to Try in Old Forge

Our favorite pizza locations, each with their own distinct style and feel, can be found in Old Forge, which is a short drive from downtown.Although there appear to be an infinite number of pizzerias inside such a limited geographic region, there is no such thing as competition in this sector.Despite the fact that the locals have their preferences, this is something that is always changing.

The one consistency in this group is that they are all neighbors who look out for one another and assist one another when they are in need. It’s everything about family here, from sharing food to exchanging grins.

    Arcaro & Genell.

Arcaro & Genell is one of the most well-known pizzerias in the neighborhood, and with good reason.A slice of pizza from their takeaway store or a meal with friends in the warm, pleasant restaurant or private event space is what this family-run company is all about for the residents of the neighborhood.Definitely don’t forget to check out the red pizza tray with shrimp and spicy pepper platter!

    Revello’s.

Revello’s has the sense of an old-fashioned restaurant that serves peace, love, and pizza. The bar is lined with televisions showing the finest of Pennsylvania sports, and families are congregating for a quick bite to eat with the kids while watching the game. The white cut is the way to go here, as it has melted cheese that oozes out the edges and has a surprising quantity of American cheese for the size of the sandwich.

Don’t dismiss it until you’ve given it a go!

    Cusumano’s.

Cusumano’s is a more upmarket establishment for those seeking a more refined atmosphere. As with the other neighborhood establishments, the tiny, sunken bar serves both red and white pizza, with a somewhat crunchier dough and a slightly sweeter sauce than its competitors. Choose the onion tray for a wonderful balance of tastes in this situation.

    Anthony’s.

Cusumano’s is a fine-dining establishment with a more premium atmosphere. Similarly to the other nearby establishments, the tiny, sunken bar serves both red and white pizza, albeit the crust is a little crunchier and the sauce a little sweeter than its competition. If you want a wonderful blend of tastes, go with the onion tray.

    Augustine Club 17.

It’s nice to go somewhere where everyone knows your name every now and again. And the address of this establishment is Augustine Club 17.This neighborhood tavern boasts a dark, wooden bar with plenty of seats, four-tops abounding, and bar games to boot.

It’s like stepping into a scene from an episode of Cheers. Its pizzas are even more diverse, such as the Coyote, which is served on an Old Forge-style platter and is covered with red pepper sauce, grilled chicken, jalapenos, and a house-mix cheese blend.

    Mary Lou’s.

In our opinion, the web presence of a pizza restaurant gives you a good indication of how quaint the establishment is, and Mary Lou’s is no exception. The proprietors consider themselves to be family, and that family communicates via Facebook; there is no website and no direct messaging. This modest restaurant features a pleasant ambience and a limited, straightforward menu that includes handmade pastas, classic pizzas, and other dishes.

At this mom-and-pop shop, foodies will be transported to the Italian city of Naples.

    Salerno’s Cafe.

We have friends from South Jersey who would move mountains to get their hands on a Salerno’s cut when they are in the neighborhood. This well-known local eatery joins the other well-known pizza cafés in dishing up typical Old Forge style pizza, but with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients to enable its plates stand out from the crowd.Salerno’s is famous for their seasonal basic red sauce, which is similar to a neapolitan style topping and made with ripe, juicy tomatoes, hand-cut basil, and fresh garlic.

    Conclusion

A day excursion to Old Forge, as well as a good ol’ fashioned pizza crawl through the town, are both must-do activities to add to your itinerary. And who wouldn’t want to take a road trip to the ″Pizza Capital of the World,″ right? Possibly in honor of National Pizza Day? I’m just throwing it out there…

This City Is the No. 1 Town for Pizza Lovers—and It’s Not New York (Or Chicago)

And, no, it isn’t New York that is the most popular city for pizza lovers in the United States. It’s not Chicago, though, so that rules out that possibility. But please, don’t give us that filthy look—we’re only here to report the news, people.

In a study conducted by SmartAsset, which analyzed data on pizza-related variables from 150 of the country’s major cities, Detroit was found to be the greatest city in the United States for pizza lovers, with Chicago just making the top 50.Yes, you read it correctly: Chicago ranked 43rd, while New York came in third, just below Buffalo, in the rankings.Using data from 150 of the country’s largest cities, SmartAsset, a New York-based personal finance technology company, analyzed the total number of pizza restaurants, the average quality of pizza restaurants, the percentage of highly rated pizza restaurants, the number of pizza restaurants per 10,000 residents, and the cost of living in each community.

    1. The city of Detroit, which is famed for its square, deep-dish, crispy-crust kind of pizza, was named the ″pizza capital of the United States″ by the research.
    2. The city, which is home to the famed Buddy’s Rendezvous and the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza, has around 1,050 pizza shops and 15.5 outlets for every 10,000 persons, according to the 2010 census.
    3. ″Detroit also does highly in terms of quality,″ according to the SmartAsset assessment.
    4. ″The average Yelp rating for a pizza restaurant in Detroit is 3.42 stars.
    5. For those who are genuine pizza connoisseurs and will only be in Detroit for a short period of time, it is recommended that you conduct some preliminary study before arriving.
    6. Only 11 percent of the pizza establishments in this area have an average rating higher than 4.4, which means that going to any random pizzeria may leave you unsatisfied.″ Topping the list were Buffalo, New York, Vancouver, Washington, Pittsburgh, Peoria, Arizona, and Mesa, Arizona.
    1. Buffalo and New York were tied for second place with Toledo and Columbus, Ohio, for third place with Vancouver and Columbus, Ohio, respectively.

The Square Beyond Compare: 8 Facts You MUST Know About Detroit-Style Pizza

Peoria and Mesa, Arizona, are both located in close proximity to Phoenix and, on the surface, may not appear to be logical selections for pizza-loving residents. However, both cities have a large number of pizzerias, with 45 shops per 10,000 persons in Peoria (population: about 154,000) and 17.7 stores per 10,000 residents in Mesa (population: approximately 200,000).(population: about 439,000).

In fact, Arizona had six cities in the Top 25, which was the most of any state in the study and the most of any city in the country.Cape Coral, Florida, which was placed 16th overall on the list, had the largest percentage of ″highly rated pizza shops,″ with 21.9 percent, compared to 17.2 percent in New York City, according to the study.Chicago, on the other hand, came in at just No.

    1. 43, trailing below less well-known pizza hotspots.
    2. As the study points out, ″you might be asking why this is the case.″ ″Well, according to our research, Yelpers are severe critics of Chicago deep-dish when it comes to deep-dish pizza.
    3. When it came to pizza quality, the Windy City came in worst in each of our tests.
    4. On the other hand, one could argue that Chicagoans just have greater expectations for their pizza, which is reflected in their more negative Yelp ratings.
    5. That’s absolutely a possibility,″ says the author.

Pizza history buffs, here’s the story behind the quintessential Detroit pizzeria: Buddy’s Rendezvous!

Several of the other outcomes were less unexpected. The survey found that Midwestern cities scored exceptionally high for pizza, while the South was found to be the worst place for the dish. ″In general, southern cities don’t have that many pizza places, and the ones that do exist aren’t very highly ranked,″ the study’s authors write in their conclusion.
