If you examine the lower layer of dough, you may find that it is thinner than you had anticipated despite the fact that it is thicker than thin crust alternatives. With its buttery crunch, the outside crust is more jagged than its thick-crust brothers, and it ends a little smoother on the palate than its thick-crust siblings. Pro tip: When ordering pizza from a restaurant, request that it be delivered ″uncut″ in order to maintain the proper crust consistency.
  2. From the crust, the cheese is the next step up, and there is plenty and lots of cheese. Typically, the cheese isn’t sliced or shredded, but rather comes in full-melted slices that are baked. It’s ooey and delicious, and it’s easy to make. Because, after all, it’s cheese.
  3. Toppings: Place your toppings on top of the cheese. More often than not, the toppings are stuffed full of flavor and thick. When you order vegetables, it appears as though you have raided a salad bar. When you order pepperoni, the slices are piled on top of one another. A patty that I lovingly refer to as ″slab o’″ is served with sausage when you order it at a famous place. If sausage crumbles (big crumbles) are your thing, you might be able to find them at the newer establishments or by just asking for them at the older ones. When compared to the filled pizzas below, the deep dish toppings can be differentiated without having to delve too far into your pizza—at least, not too deeply
  4. Sauce: The sauce is placed on top of your toppings. Sometimes the sauce has the appearance of crushed tomatoes, while other times the sauce has the appearance of stewed tomatoes. In either case, it is often rather thick and adds the last flourish to your deep dish pizza. Similarly to the aforementioned pan pizza, it is also what maintains the cheese gooey and free from browning as much as possible. Suggestion: Don’t care for all of that sauce? Simply request it with ″easy sauce″ the next time.

What is the taste of a filled pizza?The short version is as follows:

  1. Crust: This crust is a little more substantial and smooth than the previous one. The dough has a somewhat sweeter flavor, but it is also a little drier. In comparison to its deep dish version, the outside crust is somewhat higher and softer and thicker in texture. In addition, while it resembles a breadstick rather than a cracker, it is far thicker and denser than what you would see on a pan pizza.
  2. Toppings & Cheese (Optional): It’s difficult to tell which comes first, the cheese or the toppings, while looking at the sandwich with the naked eye. Is it toppings followed by cheese, cheese followed by toppings, or cheese followed by toppings followed by cheese (yow)? It doesn’t really make a difference from a pragmatic standpoint. Basically, you want to know how much cheese there is and how many toppings there are (though I believe ″stuffings″ would be a better word, wouldn’t you agree?). They’ll seem more jumbled together than the distinct layers of a deep dish because of the shallower depth. When I order a filled pizza, the toppings are amply sprinkled but not overwhelmed, and the sausage is crumbled rather than a deep-dish patty, which I find to be more appealing.
  3. Dough: This is when things really start to get interesting. A thin layer of dough is placed on top of your cheesy toppings to keep them from falling off. The name ″stuffed″ stems from the fact that the dough is doubled in quantity. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you could think it’s cheese, but it is not. You’ll note right away that the consistency is different, since it is neither melty nor gooey like the others. It varies from the crust on the bottom of the pan because it does not rest on the pan. It does not dry out, and the color remains more or less the same as that of the cheese it is made from. If you’re making a vegetable pie, the top layer of dough will usually have vents cut into it so that moisture can escape as the pie cooks—this is a good idea if you’re eating plenty of vegetables (and don’t want the inside of your mouth to be burned!).
  4. Sauce: The stuffing is topped with a layer of sauce on top, just like the deep dish pizza. Most of the time, you’ll only find tomatoes that have been pureed and seasoned, with the stewed varieties reserved for the deep dish. Because of the sauce and the extra layer of dough on top of your pizza, you may not be able to see what’s within. When you have a family that is unable to make a decision and gets a half-and-half pizza, things might become complicated. If you believe this may become a problem, please consult with a local pizza specialist and ask for some advice (if you have kids, that means you, because it will become an issue). Aside: when I was a child, my brother and I attempted to buy pizza with quarters, and it was a complete disaster.
