A PERFECTLY DELICIOUS COPYCAT RECIPE

  • When my husband and I were stationed in England some years ago, I found myself yearning for some of my favorite dishes from back home.
  • Even if I couldn’t get my hands on them in England, I would try to make them myself.
  • A good example of this was Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza.

Despite the fact that this recipe is quite similar to my EASY LAYERED TACO BAKE, I do not use refried beans in that recipe and the tortillas in that recipe are not fried.

  • This is entirely a product of the United States.
  • It’s one of those meals that Taco Bell developed specifically for the American market.

Ingredients

The original recipe makes six servings. The ingredient list has been updated to match the number of servings stated.

Directions

  • Checklist for Instructions Step 1Combine the crushed tomatoes, canola oil, oregano, basil, and sugar in a large saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to a simmer and continue to boil the sauce, stirring often, until the flavors are well mixed, perhaps 30 minutes more than you originally planned. Advertisement
  • Step 2: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius)
  • Step 3: Fill a big saucepan halfway with lightly salted water and bring it to a roaring boil, stirring occasionally. Bring the pot back to a boil after adding the shell pasta. Cook the pasta, uncovered, tossing periodically, for approximately 10 minutes, or until the shells are cooked but still firm. Drain the water well
  • Step 4In a large mixing basin, combine the mushrooms, green pepper, and onion. To stuff the shells, spread about 1 teaspoon of tomato sauce into each shell and top with the mushroom, green pepper, and onion mixture. Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. About 1 tablespoon of Monterey Jack cheese should be placed on top of the shell. Repeat the process with the remaining shells and filling, and arrange the stuffed shells in a 9×13-inch baking dish so that they are touching each other. Place a few slices of small pepperoni on each of the pizza shells. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the pepperoni pieces are crisp
  • Step 5Pour the remaining tomato sauce gently about the shells.

Cook’s Note

Try it with onions that have been gently caramelized. It’s a great pairing with the cheese.

  • Top the meat layer with a second tostada shell, then drizzle with enchilada sauce and top with cheese crumbles (optional).

Cook the tostadas and cheese until they are crispy and the cheese is melted on the pizzas under the broiler.Add diced tomatoes, green onions, and sliced olives to the tops of the pizzas before serving and enjoying them.

Tips for the perfect pizza

  • After you’ve finished adding all of your toppings, cut the pizzas into four wedges and serve them to your guests. Because the shells do soften when exposed to the toppings for an extended period of time, these pizzas are best served shortly after they are taken out of the oven.
  • The beans should be distributed equally over the tops of the tostada shells, using an offset spatula. I choose 90 percent lean ground beef since it has lots of flavor without adding a lot of fat. You should drain any extra grease from the meat after it has been cooked if you are using a high fat meat
  • I recommend grating your own cheese for this dish because many store-bought packets of shredded cheese include anti-caking chemicals and do not melt as well as fresh grated cheese does

Mexican pizza variations

  • The components in this version of Mexican pizza are quite similar to those found at Taco Bell, but you can always change up the ingredients to make the meal more tailored to your preferences. Meat: Ground turkey, shredded chicken, or diced steak can be used for ground beef in recipes.
  • Fillings: You may customize your tacos by using other ingredients such as corn, chopped green chilies, or sautéed bell peppers.
  • Optional toppings include cilantro, sour cream, avocado, sliced jalapenos, and salsa verde
  • however, you can use any combination of these items.

Copycat Taco Bell Mexican Pizza Recipe

  • Taco Bell launched the Mexican pizza in 1988, a unique combination of two separate styles that may be considered the first ″fusion″ food to successfully enter the public and become a popular dish worldwide.
  • The Mexican pizza has seen a few transformations throughout the years, but the basic formula has remained the same over the years.
  • Is it possible to create a Mexican pizza at home?

Yes, we certainly can. That was a lot simpler to create than you anticipated, and it’s something that you’ll definitely make again.

Gather your ingredients

  • What you’ll need to produce your own Taco Bell Mexican pizza is as follows: a can of chopped green chilies (drained and rinsed), refried beans (drained and rinsed), mozzarella cheese (shredded), cheddar cheese (shredded), pepper jack cheese (shredded), and a tomato are all ingredients in this dish.
  • The whole list of ingredients, as well as a step-by-step recipe, may be found at the conclusion of this article.

What is the Mexican pizza?

  • If you’ve had a Taco Bell Mexican pizza in the past, but haven’t had one in a while, you might be startled to learn that it’s undergone some modifications recently.
  • The meal no longer includes black olives, and it is now served in four ″pizza″ pieces rather than one large one.
  • It’s made in the same manner as a Chicago-style pizza, with a ″stuffing″ of meat and beans in the centre and a layer of sauce, cheese, and tomatoes on top.

The sauce is the most difficult component, while the interior is the simplest part.Let’s start with something simple.

We’re making taco meat again

  • We’ve made Taco Bell flesh three times now, and we’ve gotten the process down to a fine science.
  • If this is your first time reading one of these, here’s the gist of what you should expect: Due to the fact that Taco Bell’s meat is only 88 percent beef, we need a filler to make it ″stretch.″ Oats are used as a filler.
  • It’s effective, and there’s no discernible oat flavor at all.

To make this dish, the ingredients are the same as before: half a pound of ground beef and one-eighth cup of cooked oats.Following that, add the spices: one tablespoon each of smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder, three teaspoons each of chili powder, a tablespoon each of cocoa powder (for color, not for chocolatey deliciousness), a cup of water, and two tablespoons each of cornstarch.Stir well.

100 percent of the time, it tastes exactly like Taco Bell’s 88 percent beef tacos.

Which three cheeses?

  • Taco Bell uses three types of cheese to produce its pizza, and one of them appears apparent even though it’s something you’d never think about.
  • Additionally, in addition to cheddar and pepper jack (which they officially refer to as ″Monterey pepper jack″), the Bell uses mozzarella, which is a bit more typical than you might expect.
  • When you take a glance at the Mexican pizza, you’ll see that there’s a lot more white cheese than orange cheese, and the pepper jack has very little sting to it.

Tortillas

Tortilla shells are available in far too many different forms and sizes these days. The taco shell you desire is a soft taco shell, not a fajita shell, which is somewhat bigger than the taco shells used by Taco Bell. Of course, you can make this as large or as little as you want and use whatever ingredients you want, but if you want it to look like Taco Bell, use soft taco shells instead.

Tomatoes

I went into great depth about the Taco Bell tomatoes the last time I wrote about them. The short version is that you have complete freedom to use whatever you choose! Make sure to use a fresh tomato that has been properly diced for this recipe.

Refried beans

  • We’re not going to recreate the wheel.
  • Making homemade refried beans from scratch is something you can accomplish at home – by purchasing whole beans, soaking them, and cooking them yourself.
  • It might be a time-consuming endeavor.

Of course, you could simply grin and bear it and purchase a can of refried beans instead.Time is money, and the work required to recreate Taco Bell’s beans from scratch isn’t worth it; instead, simply purchase a can of the company’s beans.Take a can and heat it according to your preferences.

The Mexican pizza sauce

  • The sauce is the most important component of the Mexican pizza.
  • A combination between pizza sauce and salsa, it has a distinct flavor.
  • They do refer to it as ″pizza sauce,″ despite the fact that it is made up of of tomatoes and sugar.

The sauce will be made from scratch, starting with red enchilada sauce. After that, we’ll add a little additional flavor to get it just perfect. The majority of the ingredients we’ll need will already be in the red enchilada sauce; all we’ll need to do is add a little kick to finish it off.

Add a teaspoon of sugar, a teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder, and a teaspoon of the liquid from a can of green chilis to a can of that and mix well. However, because we’re only creating a tiny batch of this, it wouldn’t be practical for us to try to take two little chopped chilis and mince them up into oblivion in order to include them into this recipe.Combined all of the ingredients in a small saucepan and heated on a medium-low setting to blend the flavors.

We just want to bring everything together, rather than boiling things down.If the mixture begins to boil, reduce the heat to a simmer.

Cook time

  • Let’s get down to business with the meat.
  • Combine all of the ingredients except the cornstarch in a medium-sized saucepan and cook over medium heat until the cornstarch is dissolved.
  • You may put everything in at the same time, even the water.

Using water to cook raw, twice-ground beef has the advantage of breaking up the meat into even smaller bits, making it more similar to what Taco Bell is serving up.Isn’t it delightful to look at?Yes, but don’t be concerned; it will taste far superior than how it seems.

Pour in the cornstarch and whisk to blend as the mixture begins to come together, approximately three to four minutes into the cooking process.Depending on your stove, the whole cooking time should be between four and five minutes total.Allow the mixture to come to a boil, then decrease the heat to a low heat to allow everything to tighten up.

Cheese mix

  • I make my own cheese gratings.
  • Purchase the pre-shredded product if that is what you like to do.
  • For this recipe, you’ll need one-fourth cup of mozzarella, one-third cup of pepper jack, and one-fourth cup of cheddar.

Shredding should be done on the thin grade setting with around 12 shreds mozzarella, 8 pepper jack, and 10 cheddar on the cutting board at the same time.I realize this seems really scientific. However, it is effective.

Prepare the shells

  • This is a two-step operation that involves the shell.
  • Cook a shell for about three minutes over medium-low heat in a pan, then take it from the pan and place it on a plate.
  • That will be the ″top″ layer of the structure.

Cook for three minutes after placing another shell on top of it.That will serve as the foundation for the structure, and it will be from there that we will commence construction.

The bottom build

  • It is essential that we work swiftly on this project, and we will be using the same pan to complete the meal.
  • The initial layer is made up of refried beans, which should be distributed across the whole top of the bottom shell.
  • To apply the refried beans, you may find it more convenient to just remove the shell from the pan.

Don’t be intimidated by this option; it is not cheating. After that, place a scoop of meat — a little more than a tablespoon — in the center of the shell and distribute it evenly over the entire thing. You’ll most likely end up with a little more than Taco Bell uses, but that’s great with me.

When it comes to Taco Bell, the meat-to-bean ratio is ″a lot of bean to little meat″; we’re not going to change that by adding a little additional beef to this dish.

The top layer

  • The bottom has finally been completed in all its glory.
  • Place the first tortilla shell we fried right back on top of it, and then spread a layer of sauce on top of it.
  • Repeat with the second tortilla shell.

You want the shell to be pretty much completely covered, much as you would with a real pizza, so don’t go all the way to the edge, but leave enough crust for the toppings to stick to.Add the cheese mixture to the top, liberally spreading it across the surface in a uniform layer. Finally, the sliced tomatoes are added, and we have a Mexican pizza on our hands!

Melting the cheese is one more step that must be completed for this dish to be great. The microwave appears to be the natural next step here, however doing so may soften the shell too much and result in a floppy mess. For those of us who don’t happen to have a salamander in our kitchen, we’ll need a quick and easy technique to produce a gooey top.

Remove the pan lid from the oven and wet it (not sopping wet, but with just enough moisture on it to generate steam when heated), then place it on top of the pan and set a timer for three minutes to cook. That will provide us with just the right amount of melty deliciousness to make this just wonderful.

The cut

Remove it to a cutting board and cut it into quarters once the top has acquired the desired melty-ness. The Mexican Pizza, of course, didn’t always come cut, and back in the day, you were forced to use your knife and spork skills to really cut it, so if you want to keep it old school and traditional, skip the cut. Break out the pizza cutter and slice up a slice of pizza for the rest of us.

How close are we?

  • The meat still tastes just like Taco Bell, but the sauce, which is identical to the original, is what distinguishes this as a knock-off of the original. All of the tastes come together as a result of the layering, and you’ll be hard pressed to tell the difference between the actual thing and this. To be clear, the Taco Bell Mexican Pizza sauce is darker than the original, but I assure you that the flavor is same, the only variation being the color. Mexican Pizza (Taco Bell Copycat)

  • These Mexican Pizzas are even BETTER (and more nutritious) than the ones you’re accustomed to eating at Taco Bell!
  • Corn tortillas are filled with ground beef, refried beans, and cheese and baked until the beef is cooked through.
  • In spite of the fact that Mexican Pizzas is unquestionably Americanized Mexican fare, if you’re looking for authentic Mexican cuisine, try my Authentic Mexican Rice, Homemade Tamales, or Tres Leches Cake!

Mexican Pizza

Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizzas are a favorite of many people. As it turns out, I took that concept and made it much BETTER than I had originally intended! Mexican Pizzas cooked from scratch are excellent and one of those dinners on which everyone can agree. My children like constructing their own, which makes the process much simpler for me, and I enjoy cooking with them!

Ingredients in Mexican Pizza:

  • Ground meat
  • taco seasoning package (or homemade taco seasoning)
  • water
  • corn tortillas
  • refried beans
  • red enchilada sauce
  • shredded cheddar cheese
  • roma tomato
  • sliced olives
  • green onions

How to make Mexican Pizza:

  • Prepare the ground beef. Stir in the taco spice and water until everything is well-combined.
  • Make corn tortillas according to package directions. Lightly pan fried them in a small amount of oil until they are crispy.
  • Assemble.
  • Spread a thin coating of enchilada sauce on the top of one corn tortilla, followed by a layer of refried beans and a spoonful of taco meat. Repeat with the other corn tortilla. Place a second corn tortilla on top of the meat and sprinkle cheese on top of it.
  • Finish with a dollop of enchilada sauce. Cover the tortilla with a thin coating of enchilada sauce, then sprinkle with more cheese.
  • Heat the oven to 400 degrees for approximately 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  • Add olives, tomatoes, scallions, and sour cream to the dish as garnishes. To serve, cut the potatoes into wedges.

Although I believe they are best served fresh from the oven, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. You may reheat them in the oven, in a pan over medium heat on the stove, or in a microwave.

Taco Bell Mexican Pizza Recipe

Do you miss Taco Bell’s Mexican-style pizza? This authentic-tasting imitation has layers of crisp tortilla, beans, seasoned beef, tangy sauce, and lots of cheese, and it tastes just like the fast-food favorite. This recipe, which is a perfect ringer for the Taco Bell version, is also inherently healthier and simple to make vegetarian.

What Makes This Recipe So Good

  • Taco Bell has always been a late-night favorite of mine, though it isn’t as often now that I have children.
  • Whenever I went there, their Mexican pizza was a favorite.
  • It consisted of layers of crunch and crisp tortillas coated with creamy refried beans, acidic sauce, and plenty of melted cheese.

When I learned that they were discontinuing it off their menu (no!), I thought it was long past time to prepare my own version at home. This Taco Bell Mexican pizza recipe tastes just like the original one I grew up with, but it’s more healthier and less fattening.

Now, if I get those late-night cravings (but not too late), I can whip up a batch of them to satisfy them.I’m thinking of giving some to the kids as well!

Key Ingredients

  • Taco spice — A half-packet of taco seasoning infuses the meat in this dish with a savory, Mexican taste that is hard to resist.
  • To make enchilada sauce, just combine tomatoes, vinegar, and seasonings like chili powder and oregano in a jar and put it in the refrigerator.
  • This will give your Mexican pizza the true Taco Bell flavor.

Salsa – Adding salsa to the enchilada sauce elevates it to the level of a sauce but not quite that of a salsa. The ideal combination for sprinkling on top of your Mexican pizza!

Chef’s Tips

  • Simply exclude the meat from your Mexican pizzas to make them vegetarian.
  • You may customize the toppings on this pizza to your liking, including sour cream, sliced jalapenos, and guacamole. Taco Bell style, with some chopped tomatoes, is my preferred method.

  • a 13 cup water
  • a spray oil
  • 8 flour tortillas 6″ taco size
  • a 16-ounce container of refried beans
  • a 13-cup red salsa
  • an 8-ounce package of shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • a diced tomato
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray both sides of the tortillas with cooking spray oil. Sprinkle with salt and prick with a fork before arranging on a baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, then turn the pan over. Bake for another 3-5 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  • Increase the heat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and combine the enchilada sauce and salsa. Remove from consideration
  • Brown and crumble the ground beef in a large pan over medium heat. Sprinkle taco seasoning over the top, then pour in the water and mix well. Bring the water to a boil, then turn down the heat. Simmer until the sauce has thickened.
  • In the meantime, cook the refried beans in a microwave-safe dish until hot. If you use a large mixing bowl, you can distribute the beans evenly across the tortilla shells. Spread each tortilla with a liberal amount of refried beans, then top with seasoned ground beef.
  • Place another tortilla on top of the first. About two tablespoons of the enchilada sauce mixture should be slathered on top, followed by some shredded cheese sprinkled on top of that. Repeat the process with the remaining tortillas.
  • Placing the pizzas on a big nonstick baking sheet and baking for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese has melted, is recommended. Toss with your preferred toppings before serving.
  • If you’re a vegetarian, you can skip the meat.
  • Suggestions for toppings include sour cream, sliced jalapenos, guacamole, or a Taco Bell-style combination of chopped tomatoes and lettuce.
