We looked at well-known brands and then pitted them against one another in a blind tasting. For this test, each sauce was served over a pizza crust with a sprinkling of cheese
  • think of it as a scaled-down version of the pizzas you’d make at home, but with less sauce. Our tasters were particularly interested in appreciating the subtleties of each sauce as well as seeing how they would hold up against the fundamentals of a pizza. These considerations were also taken into consideration by our team. Taste: Does the sauce have a fresh tomato flavor to it? Are the seasonings sufficiently salted? I’m curious about the various herbs and spices that have been added, and how they taste. Is the sauce something you’d put on a pizza and eat?
  • What is the sauce’s texture like? How thick or thin is it? Is it smooth or a little more rustic in appearance? How thick is it? Is it thick enough to spread on pizza crust or is it a little thinner, like marinara?
  • Even though we know that all of these sauces will be topped with cheese and other toppings, our Test Kitchen was looking for a sauce that looked excellent on its own. So, do you think the sauce is tempting? What’s that bright red color?
  • Are there any herbs or seasonings visible on the surface?

  • Easy as pie, and because there is no cooking involved, this red sauce has a delicious tomato taste, comparable to the kind you’d get at a posh Italian pizza.
  • Enjoy!

  2. We like to use this over handmade pizza dough, but it’s also delicious as a dip for breadsticks or toasted pizza dough.

Why this is the BEST Pizza Sauce:

  • Homemade pizza sauce is far superior than store-bought pizza sauces in taste and consistency.
  • While pre-cooked and canned sauces tend to dry out on a pizza, this uncooked sauce retains the bright tomato flavor and color while also retaining the real flavor of the tomatoes.
  • Authentic pizza sauce is not cooked until it is placed on a pizza and baked in the oven.
  • Chefs at Bon Appetit and Baking Steal taught me how to create the tastiest red sauce, and I’ve been using it ever since.

Ingredients for Homemade Pizza Sauce:

  • Begin with a can of your favorite canned crushed tomatoes.
  • We adore Italian San Marzano tomatoes, and a single 28 oz can can provide around 3 cups of tomato sauce, which is a great value.
  • Simple seasonings like as garlic, extra virgin olive oil, fine sea salt, and dried oregano are all that are required.
  • You might feel tempted to add more than 1/2 teaspoon salt at this point, but the sauce will be ideal once the flavors have melded.
  1. Also, keep in mind that your toppings (such as cheese) will contribute to the saltiness of your pizza.

How to Make Pizza Sauce:

This simple tomato sauce for pizza is made with only a blender or food processor, and there is no cooking involved – that is, there is no cooking involved at all!

  1. Pulse all of the ingredients together until they are well-combined and well-blended.
  2. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, and up to 7 days, before serving. It’s ideal if you wait till the next day.

How to Store Pizza Sauce:

  • This red sauce is one of our favorites since it can be made ahead of time. It stays really well in the refrigerator for at least a week and just becomes better with time as the flavors come together. We like it the next day, which is ideal for pairing with our overnight pizza dough recipe. TO STORE IN THE REFRIGERATOR: Pour the sauce into a mason jar or other airtight storage container, seal securely, and store in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks.
  • HOW TO FREEZE PIZZA SAUCE: You can also freeze pizza sauce by portioning it into freezer-safe zip-top bags, pressing out any excess air, and sealing the bags. Place it flat in the freezer and it will defrost much more quickly. It’s also possible to freeze pizza dough for a quick and simple pizza night whenever the mood strikes.

In case you prefer a white sauce on your pizza, be sure to try our handmade Garlic-Parmesan White Pizza Sauce, which is created with garlic and parmesan cheese. It is our children’s favorite, and it is the one they constantly request when we make homemade pizza for them. Get the Red Pizza Sauce Recipe, which is printable, by clicking on the link below:

  • Which is good: This pie from the venerable pizza company near to a shopping center has been upgraded to become slightly fancier: The pepperoni has a distinct smoky flavor, there are tiny chopped tomatoes, and the cheese—blocks of mozzarella and smoked Gouda—is flecked with basil in a random manner, as if a stoned teenager at the mall manually shook the herb on top of the pizza.
  • The crust, which has a crackery feel and a faint saltiness to it, is also noteworthy.
  • Improvements are needed: Those flourishes are also a downer since they create the impression that you purchased a lot better pizza before the overall meh of it tells you that the pizza was frozen.
  • If you had ordered this in a restaurant, you would have been disappointed.
  1. Aside from the possibility of ordering from California Pizza Kitchen, you’re probably on a high school date in the heart of Midwestern United States.
  2. As a side note, CPK has lately begun offering take-and-bake versions of its restaurant pies on its website.
  3. A lot more appetizing way to utilize your oven is if you have a CPK in the neighborhood.
  4. In addition, they freeze exceptionally well.
  1. Additionally, the margherita and white cheese varieties of their frozen pizza are well worth trying.

Table 87 Coal Oven Margherita

  • What’s good: It’s shocking that it took this long for someone to get a New York slice into a grocery store’s freezer, but thanks to a Shark Tank investment, Brooklyn’s Table 87 Coal Oven Pizza is expanding nationwide and distinguishing itself from the competition with a massive frozen margherita slice.
  • There’s a lot going on in this massive triangle’s taste profile: a deliciously gooey cheese with a strong kick of salt, fresh basil sprigs, and an authentic pizzeria-quality sauce that hits the perfect balance between acidic and sweet.
  • There is room for improvement in the following areas: The only thing holding it back is the crust, which has lost its spring somewhere down the line in the preparation process, and therefore comes out of the oven thick and brittle.
  • What’s more, because of the cracker-like consistency, slices are commonly cracked during the baking process.
  1. While not as delicious as some of the false Famous Ray’s knockoffs you could come across late at night in New York City, it is a remarkable feat of frozen-pizza ingenuity…
  2. However, if you want a superior crust experience, avoid the slice and go for the full-sized, single-serving round version.

American Flatbread Uncured Pepperoni & Uncured Bacon

  • What’s great about it: It’s one of the few frozen pizzas that could be mistaken for a restaurant pie (though don’t confuse it with the famous Vermont pizzeria of the same name), and its springy, slightly sour dough base, which is easily foldable in contrast to its cardboard counterparts, achieves a high degree of pliability.
  • Things get more unusual when it comes to the toppings: instead of just pepperoni slices, this basic pie is topped with bits of pepperoni and bacon that has been chopped into the consistency of hog floss.
  • Does it have a bacon flavor to it?
  • No, not at all.
  1. Is this pie still on the table for me to eat?
  2. Absolutely.
  3. There is room for improvement in the following areas: But, in all seriousness, I wish the bacon had a stronger bacon flavor, and I assume that larger slices would accomplish this rather than being overshadowed by the pepperoni’s flavors.
  4. Moreover, while the dough is deliciously acidic, it also has a sticky layer that detracts from the crisp surface.
  1. However, these are insignificant.
  2. Now, please pass the bacon floss.

Newman’s Own Uncured Pepperoni

  • Among the highlights is this pizza, which you can feel good about eating: Newman’s Own distributes 100% of their income to charitable organizations.
  • The only downside to this is that you may feel dizzy after you’ve finished the whole thing.
  • The cheese on this pizza is excellent, and the sauce has a subtle kick of heat that pairs well with the thicker-than-usual uncured pepperoni.
  • There is room for improvement: This is a perfectly acceptable frozen pizza, except for the crust, which is hardly edible after it has passed the cardboard stage.
  1. Nonetheless, the whole package more than makes up for a slight lack of variety on the back end.
  2. It’s similar to the movie The Color of Money.

Screamin’ Sicilian Holy Pepperoni

  • What’s great about it: A standout among the new generation of frozen pizzas fighting for shelf space in your freezer, Screamin’ Sicilian has made a sensation with its wacky and colorful packaging, which includes a cut-out mustache.
  • The crust is genuinely bendable and does not have that stale, cardboard quality that many other crusts have to provide.
  • The cheese, in particular, is outstanding, with a stretchiness that rivals that of a pizza.
  • The thick-cut pepperoni is lavishly smeared on top of the pizza.
  1. There is room for improvement in the following areas: The sauce, which is far too acidic, is the only thing holding this dish back from being truly outstanding.
  2. It lives up to its promise (or threat?) to ″attack your taste senses″ on the box.
  3. That is a question of personal preference, however it would be much simpler to overlook if the sauce wasn’t used in such large quantities.
  4. This is a very good pizza.

Freschetta

  • What’s good: If you bake the crust at the proper time, it will be bouncy and delicious.
  • Even if it doesn’t quite equal the pizzeria bounce you get with thicker-crust options, the stringy cheese adds a nice touch to the whole experience and helps to elevate it even more.
  • The pepperoni adds a meaty saltiness to the dish, but it isn’t really impressive in any way.
  • I like how it’s somewhat generic, but in a good way.
  1. There is room for improvement in the following areas: The sauce is the actual downfall of this dish.
  2. Everything is overpowered by its powerful kick, which would be OK if this creature wasn’t swimming about in everything all the time.
  3. It just completely drowns out anything else around it.
  4. It’s a shame that it has the potential to derail such a delicious pie—and make no mistake, this is a delicious pie.
  1. The good news is that The fact that Freschetta creates a fantastic brick-oven square pie only serves to highlight the tragedy of the original’s collapse at the finish line.

Outsiders Milwaukee-Style Pepperoni

  • What’s good: Despite the packaging’s assertion that Milwaukee-style pizza exists and the appearance of a variety laden with spicy sausage, caramelized onions, and cheese curds, there is no such thing as Milwaukee-style pizza.
  • What’s bad: No, what you’re looking at is a tavern-style pie.
  • Nonetheless, semantics be damned, they manage to pull it off.
  • However, it’s the sauce, which is sweet and salty but not at all caustic, along with the salty and smoky cheese that elevates this thin offering to the top of the heap.
  1. It’s the sauce that elevates this thin offering to the top of the heap.
  2. The pepperoni, which is served in discs and coarsely chopped hunks that have been charred, is also the most delicious and least greasy of the bunch, according to the chef.
  3. There is no such thing as ″Milwaukee-style pizza″ in the United States.
  4. However, if this is what it tastes like in frozen form, perhaps there should be one available.
  1. There is room for improvement in the following areas: It’s difficult to identify any flaws with this pie.
  2. Will it ever be able to compete with your favorite local pizza joint?
  3. Most likely not.

However, if your pizza business provides cardboard discs, this may not be the case.I’d say this is on par with, if not better than, any of the other pizzas on this list.

Signature Select Rising Crust

  • Good points include the crust, which is practically identical in flavor to a HOT-N-READY sandwich from Little Caesars.
  • It’s not quite the epitome of takeaway, but it does strike a nostalgic chord.
  • With flecks of Parmesan (a wonderful touch), it has an almost Crazy Bread-like feel to it, and the crust is nearly totally free of that cardboard feeling.
  • It has a bouncy, crisp, and pillowy texture.
  1. Off-brand pizza (which can be found at retailers such as Safeway, Vons, and Albertsons!) is a triumph.
  2. There is room for improvement in the following areas: After that, it’s covered in what seems to be pizza soup, which is a combination of mozzarella and a runny, somewhat mild sauce that seems like an afterthought until you realize how much of it there is on there.
  3. And the pepperoni, which is smothered in discs and thick strips, is unmistakably brand X.
  4. Five paper towels later, it was still a slick smear of grease, and when coupled with the sauce and cheese, it transformed the centre of the pizza into a gooey puddle of dough.
  1. When the entire pile of toppings falls off the plate, you know it’s a terrible omen, right?
  2. The closer you go to the crust, the more delicious it becomes.
  3. However, it is a significant amount of wasted space in the center, which should normally be the most delicious section of a pizza.

DiGiorno

  • What’s great about it: What about the cheese?
  • The flavor is salty and stretchy.
  • What’s in the sauce?
  • It’s a little sweet, but it has a wonderful red pepper bite to it.
  1. Also noteworthy is the fact that, unlike many frozen pizzas, it does not look to have been assembled by a hyperactive 2-year-old given full reign over a stock pot and a giant ladle of grease.
  2. In fact, you’d never guess that this was a delivery situation.
  3. However, you are unlikely to be bothered by this because it is one of the most well-balanced and nuanced of all the selections available in your freezer.
  4. It appears at the top of lists like this on a regular basis, and with good cause.
  1. There is room for improvement in the following areas: Look, this isn’t what you’d call a ″traditional″ pizza.
  2. The crust is really solid on the bottom and doughy on the top, with a slight chew to it.
  3. However, this pizza appears to be making a sincere effort to be a genuine pizza, and it appears to be succeeding in this endeavor.

On any given day, I’d rather eat this than pizza from Domino’s or Papa Murphy’s.

Pizza Romana Pepperoni

  • What’s great about it: A pizza came out of my oven that would not have looked out of place in a traditional cardboard pizza box, with cheese sizzling and a big ol’ bubble in the dough, which was a first in our frozen pizza guide.
  • And the consistency of the crust is truly stunning when you take your first bite: Springy and doughy, it can be folded in half without shattering into cracker fragments when you do so.
  • Pizza Romana is genuinely imported from Italy and is sold in upscale and small-town supermarkets, and its Italian background is evident.
  • The cheese is truly able to expand!
  1. Instead of being a taste hog, the pepperoni contributes to the team!
  2. The sauce, on the other hand, is…
  3. well, to be honest, the sauce is sort of forgettable.
  4. Despite this, there’s a lot to like about this place.
  1. If this came from a pizza restaurant, it would most likely be in the top 10 in most typical towns, unless the town in question was Florence, in which case it would most likely be at around the 700th spot, which is still quite respectable.
  2. Improvements are possible: The only thing holding it back is a strange aftertaste that detracts from the overall quality, as if someone thought it would be humorous to have every third mouthful taste like a Totino’s Party Pizza.
  3. However, it is only a minor source of distraction.

And, as previously stated, the sauce isn’t particularly noteworthy—but it’s quite enough.

Table5 Uncured Pepperoni

  • What’s great about it: Table5 tastes like the result of someone attempting to construct a Chicago-style deep dish, then giving up, reducing the quantity of toppings, and declaring it satisfactory.
  • Even better than that.
  • There are just so many factors working in this thing’s favor that it calls into question the whole premise of what a frozen pizza is in the first instance.
  • Beginning with a characteristic cornmeal crust that acts as both a buttery, luscious holding vessel and a reward at the end of a slice, this pie is sure to please.
  1. No joking, if I could get my hands on this crust at a pizza, I’d be overjoyed: In doing so, it avoids the necessity of using a rising crust and instead provides a base that wouldn’t be out of place at a high-end artisan pizza parlor or restaurant.
  2. It’s a crust with a distinct personality.
  3. Crust that is confident in its own skin and doesn’t pretend to be anything other than itself is what we are talking about here.
  4. Apart from that, the pepperoni is adequately placed and has a good zip, while the cheese has an astonishing amount of flexibility.
  1. There is room for improvement in the following areas: The sauce is the one thing that I don’t care for.
  2. It’s actually rather good—tangy, somewhat sweet, and with the addition of herbs, it’s well balanced.
  3. However, until you get to the crust, there isn’t much to be found on it.

In fact, there was a brief moment when I thought something was wrong and there was no sauce at all. Then, as I got to the third mouthful, I found it was hidden at the rear of the sandwich.Every slice of this pizza grows better and better, all the way up to that wonderful crust. It was a clever trick.

After then, you get to start over from the beginning.Which is exactly what I did. That is, until the entire pie was consumed in just fifteen minutes.

Home Run Inn

  • What’s great about it: It’s not the kind of pizza you envision when you’re craving a quick fix, unless you grew up in Chicago and frequented a certain pizzeria (which happens to be named Home Run Inn, in case you didn’t know).
  • If you do, consider yourself lucky.
  • This isn’t your typical deep-dish or Chicago thin-crust pizza: In fact, it’s more of a hybrid meal, taking the butteriness of a deep-dish dish and flattening it.
  • The crust is deep, rich, and buttery, rather than light and fluffy, and it tastes a lot like a cross between a savory cracker and a pie crust with a hint of salt.
  1. A wonderful alchemy occurs when it is combined with the slightly sweet and tangy sauce, the blanket of beautifully salty and stretchy mozz, and the gently spicy uncured pepperoni, which all come together to form the perfect pizza.
  2. It’s hardly what you were expecting when you chose to pick up a pizza at the grocery store, is it?
  3. It’s a step forward.
  4. In fact, it’s the greatest frozen pizza available on the market.
  1. There is room for improvement in the following areas: There are no criticisms in this section.

  4. That doesn’t give off the correct vibe.
  1. Pizza is a type of street cuisine, and a good sauce is not much more complicated than that.
  2. It is not always necessary to prepare an excellent pizza sauce (it cooks in the oven, with your pie).
  3. Rather than being reduced to a mush, it gives sharp, zesty notes that cut through the umami-dense, salty sensations of cheese and cured meats, which are otherwise overpowering.

If the pizza is made in a certain way, it may even contain a slight trace of sweetness. So, who manufactures the greatest pizza sauce that you can find on supermarket shelves? To discover out, we conducted a blind taste test on ten of the most widely accessible products.

The Process

  • The pizza dough utilized for this blind taste test was a Boboli pre-made pizza crust, which I sliced into 10 separate pieces and then had my girlfriend top each with a dollop of sauce and a dusting of mozzarella (for the entire pizza experience) while standing away from my line of vision.
  • I taste-tested each combination of crust, sauce, and cheese before she put them in the oven (five at a time) for the last time.
  • In order to determine if your money would be better spent purchasing a can of whole peeled tomatoes and preparing the sauce yourself, I also produced my own basic sauce to test how it would do against the competition.
  • Simple ingredients were used for the sake of simplicity and to ensure that anybody with no culinary training could produce the sauce themselves at home.
  1. The components were canned tomatoes, salt, pepper, a glug of olive oil, and a dusting of oregano and basil, to name a few.
  2. Let’s get started with the tasting!

Taste 1

  • This sauce had a rich crimson color and a very smooth consistency when it was first introduced to me.
  • It is unquestionably a pureed sauce.
  • However, although I was anticipating something that tasted hefty and strong, this sauce surprised me with a fresh and zesty flavor that was unexpected.
  • Unfortunately, that initial rush of energy quickly dwindled to a fairly neutral state.
  1. You can tell that cornstarch is being used significantly as a
