Shakey’s Pizza – History

History Shakey’s Pizza was established on April 30, 1954, in Sacramento, California, by Sherwood ″Shakey″ Johnson and Ed Plummer as a family-owned business.Johnson’s nickname came about as a result of nerve damage sustained during World War II as a result of an attack of malaria. The parlor opened on the first weekend, but because the pizza ovens were not yet finished, only beer was served, and Shakey used the revenues from beer sales to purchase the ingredients for the pizza that would be served the following Monday.Shakey individually performed dixieland jazz piano for the enjoyment of the audience.

  • In the beginning, Shakey’s was not well-known outside of Sacramento because of its pizza, but rather because of the jazz show it sponsored on a regional radio network.
  • His usage of banjo music in his pizza parlors, which he has done for many years, is commemorated in the American Banjo Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where Shakey Johnson is recognized.
  • Other types of live music, such as piano, were also a regular feature in the original Shakey’s parlors.

It was in operation until the mid-1990s at the corner of 57th and J Streets in Sacramento, where the original building was a refurbished grocery store.Expansion In 1956, the second Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, this one in Portland, Oregon, opened its doors. After a successful second location in Portland, Shakey’s established their third parlor in Albany, Oregon, in 1959, which was both the first building owned by Shakey’s and the first structure constructed in the distinctive architectural style for which Shakey’s is recognized. It is presently being utilized as a secondhand bookstore. The company, according to Johnson, conducted minimal market research and made the majority of its judgments on where to expand stores by looking at where Kinney Shoes had already placed locations.By the time Johnson sold his stake in the company in 1967, there were 272 Shakey’s Pizza Parlors operating throughout the United States of America.

  1. Located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the first international store opened its doors in 1968.
  2. By 1975, the corporation had grown across the Pacific Rim, which included Japan and the Philippines, as well as other countries.
  3. There are currently more branches in the Philippines (which was then under the control of San Miguel Corporation) than there are in the whole of the United States.
  4. The sale was made to Colorado Milling.
  5. Shakey Johnson sold his half of the firm for $3 million to Colorado Milling and Elevator in 1967, and the next year, Colorado Milling and Elevator purchased Plummer’s part for $9 million.

A second transaction occurred in 1974, when Shakey’s was sold once more, this time to Hunt International Resources.A group of franchisees purchased the company in 1984, and they eventually sold it to Inno-Pacific Holdings of Singapore in 1989.During the period that Inno-Pacific held the business, the majority of the outlets in the United States were shuttered. In 2003, a group of Inno-Pacific franchisees filed a lawsuit against the company.

Shakey’s was sold to the Jacmar Companies of Alhambra, California, in 2004, before the case could be brought to trial in 2005.Jacmar has owned and operated 19 Shakey’s restaurants as a franchisee. When Hunt International purchased Shakey’s in 1974, the restaurant business had around 500 locations across the United States, with one location as far east as Cockeysville, Maryland, according to the company’s website. As of 2008, there were a total of 63 locations, with 55 of them located in California. At the time of this writing, there are 58 Shakey’s restaurants in the United States.Besides California, the remaining sites are located in Auburn, Alabama; Nogales, Arizona; Warner Robins, Georgia; Waipahu, Hawaii; American Fork, Utah; Renton, Washington; and Spokane, Washington.

  1. 51 of the sites are in California, with the remaining sites scattered around the United States.
  2. Shakey’s has commenced the process of opening additional franchise locations in both new and existing markets.
  3. The most recent Shakey’s to open was in American Fork, Utah, and it offered a buffet from 7 a.m.
  4. to 10 p.m.
  5. daily.
  6. In the 1980s, Shakey’s restaurants in Iowa, Illinois, and Northwest Indiana also offered an all-day buffet.
  • Other locations normally only serve a lunch buffet on weekdays during the lunch hour.

That is the phrase that can be seen on their website, but where have all of the people gone?We have the answer for you, and we think you’ll be amazed at how good it is!Shakey’s Pizza Parlor was started in 1954 by Sherwood ″Shakey″ Johnson and is still in business today.Sacramento, California was the site of the company’s first location.

  • There was live music (mostly piano and banjo performers), as well as fresh beer and delicious pizza, available.
  • What more could a person ask for?
  • That is why the business exploded in the United States, establishing more than 400 outlets in less than two decades.

By the 1970s, the chain had achieved the pinnacle of its success in the United States. It began to unwind shortly after, but it was also expanding worldwide at the same time. There are around 100 active places in the Philippines, where it has grown in recent years. So, if it was so popular, where did all of the participants disappear to?As it gained popularity across the world, its popularity in the United States began to wane.Shakey’s Pizza Parlor now has many locations in its native state of California, as well as a single site in the state of Alabama.

  1. It’s a strange area to be in!
  2. Not only were the food selections at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor distinctive, but so was the establishment’s décor.
  3. Pizza and beer were the only items on the menu.
  4. What a very successful combo.

That classic old-fashioned atmosphere performed its job admirably in the 1950s, and it was certainly appropriate for the era.It is undeniable that, as time advanced and new generations came into being, Shakey’s would lose popularity. Many folks, though, still recall their visits to Shakey’s and wonder if the restaurant would ever make a comeback.Do you recall Shakey’s Pizza Parlor from your childhood?

Make sure to share this with your friends and ask them whether they remember Shakey’s Pizza from their childhood!Perhaps, with a little luck, Shakey’s Pizza Parlor will make an incredible resurgence across the United States and Canada. We can only hope!

Shakey’s Pizza Parlor

Wacoans who attended Shakey’s Pizza Parlor in the 1960s and 1970s were able to enjoy the flavor of pizza while listening to the sounds of Dixieland jazz in the background. It would be Shakey’s, the nation’s first franchise pizza chain, that would go on to become famous for pioneering a winning combination of casual eating and live music in hundreds of locations throughout the country. The Waco Shakey’s, located at 1420 North Valley Mills Drive, offered a laid-back ambiance for dining and entertainment until it closed its doors in 1978.Sherwood Johnson and Ed Plummer, two friends from Sacramento, California, created the first Shakey’s Pizza Parlor in the city in 1954.Johnson was given the moniker Shakey when he contracted malaria during World War II and became bedridden for many weeks. In order to honor Johnson’s fun moniker, when the time came to build their first restaurant, the two owners chose to name the franchise after him.

They wished to create a place in which families could not only dine, but also enjoy lively live music that would transport them back in time to a more innocent time in history. When live music and sit-down meals were typically kept apart in public places at the time, the gastronomic experience that Johnson and Plummer produced was noteworthy. In addition to the use of dixieland jazz bands and banjo players, costumed employees helped to create a vibrant mood of 1890s revelry.Johnson, who was also a banjo musician, urged other parlor owners to provide live banjo-infused music at their establishments.

The old-timey piano tunes and banjo strums that would accompany pizza expeditions would continue to provide a vibrant background for decades to come. The second Shakey’s restaurant opened in Portland, Oregon, in 1956, and was quickly followed by a slew of other locations around the United States.By 1967, the company had more than 272 sites around the country.

  1. The next year, Shakey’s began expanding its operations internationally.
  2. Having established the nation’s first franchise pizza chain, which would subsequently be followed by other pizza franchises such as Pizza Hut, Shakey’s was a pioneer in the American restaurant industry.
  3. The restaurant’s menu consisted of pizza, beer, and live music, a combination that proved to be as effective as it was straightforward.
  4. Restaurants in the past catered to the rich fine-dining elite as well as road visitors in the form of roadside attractions.
  5. However, as vehicles became more commonplace and families began to disperse from cities and settle in the suburbs, the 1950s saw the emergence of franchise dining and, subsequently, of family casual dining establishments.

Waco was no exception to this rule. When Shakey’s first opened its doors in Waco, Texas, in 1966, the restaurant featured a remarkable twenty-one different types of pizza, as well as a selection of Bavarian beer. The Waco site also catered to the local university community with a Collegiate Room that was oriented for the town’s young adult population. In spite of the fact that Shakey’s continued to be a popular neighborhood hangout for the following decade, the chain’s fortunes began to deteriorate after both Johnson and Plummer sold their interests to the Colorado Mining and Elevator Company in late 1960.

  • The collapse of Shakey’s in Waco in 1978 was a reflection of a broader national trend.
  • By 2010, the restaurant had just fifty-eight locations in the United States, according to its website.
  • Despite the fact that Shakey’s outlets in the United States faltered under new management and the changing tastes of the American audience, the business had tremendous success in other parts of the world.
  • As of April 2019, the company operated five hundred locations across the world, with the vast majority of them located outside of the United States.
  • Despite the passage of time, Shakey’s continues to be a bright spot in the recollections of many customers, conjuring up images of upbeat music and joyful eating.
