    • With its thicker crust and cooking in a tray, Sicilian pizza is more similar to a Focaccia with the toppings on top.
    • It is customary to place the cheese on top of the dish first.

    This prevents the thick bread-like dough below from becoming soggy and squishy.

    Where Should Toppings Go?

    • Unfortunately, the answer is a little more complicated than you would have anticipated, and it all relies around the toppings that you choose to place on your pizza, which is discussed further below.
    • When selecting when to place toppings on a pizza, the most important factor to consider is how well the toppings will hold up in the oven once baked.
    • Baking pizza requires the use of an extremely hot, dry oven that can cook dishes in a short period of time.
    • If your toppings are placed on top of the cheese, the high heat will have a significant impact on their texture.
    • If you have components that are really sensitive to high, dry temperatures, you will want to bury them beneath the cheese on the pizza, which will shield them from the heat of the oven during baking.
    • Consider the following scenario: what would happen if you placed your favorite pizza topping on a sheet tray by itself and baked it in the oven?

    Was it going to burn quickly?Was it going to get dry and crunchy?Or would it remain soft and supple, allowing the heat from the oven to enhance its flavor?

    Depending on the answers to this question, you’ll know when to place the topping on your pizza.Keep toppings that are prone to drying out and burning under the cheese.Pizza toppings that benefit from heat should be placed on top of the cheese to prevent melting.

    As a general guideline, assess whether or not your toppings will become dry and crisp when subjected to the high heat of the oven before proceeding.If this is the case, they should be buried beneath the cheese.As long as the toppings are heat-resistant, you may pile them directly on top of the cheese!To give the toppings some moisture and resilience to the heat, you may cook them first, apart from the pizza, before adding them on top of the pizza.

    If you take this extra step, they will most likely be able to sit directly on top of the cheese.

    How To Top A Pizza Properly

    • First and foremost, start with my pizza dough recipe, which can be found here.
    • Start by spreading some flour and semolina on a level surface and stretching out your dough.
    • It is preferable to use your hands rather than a rolling pin.
    • You can flip the worktop around and extend it outwards, or you can take it up and use gravity to stretch it over your hands.
    • Sprinkle some flour on top of it before placing it on your peel.
    • 2.

    Pour your sauce into the pan in a circular motion.After that, add your cheese and finally your toppings.When making fresh dough, you don’t need a lot of toppings, so don’t go overboard with the number of ingredients.

    It’s important not to get sauce on the peel since the moisture will cause the dough to adhere to the peel.Give it a little shake every now and then to make sure it hasn’t become stuck.Then, using a quick back-and-forth wrist movement, drop the pizza onto the stone in the center of the oven.

    3.Think of it as a magic trick with a table cloth – you have to draw back fast and with confidence.Try not to tilt the peel too much downward, otherwise the edge of the dough may get snagged on the hot stone, resulting in your toppings falling off.If you don’t already have a pizza peel, be sure to read my post on the best pizza peels to ensure that you acquire a decent one that is compatible with your oven.

    Supreme, the pizza that I grew up with, is right behind pepperoni in terms of popularity. …and the only rule I have about supremacy is… It has to have at least TWO types of meat. Aside than that, it’s simply another pizza…. Ingredients: pizza sauce, mozzarella, bacon, onion, beef mince, capsicum, pepperoni, mushroom, olives, and extra virgin olive oil.

    Hawaiian (Ham & Pineapple)

    If you believe you don’t enjoy Hawaiian pizza, it’s probably because you haven’t tried it prepared from scratch. Once upon a time, I was one of ″those individuals…″ Pizza sauce, mozzarella, ham, and pineapple are the main ingredients.

    BBQ Meatlovers

    It’s not even necessary to use a sophisticated BBQ sauce for this. Any generic store-bought BBQ sauce will suffice for this recipe — the emphasis is on the toppings! BBQ sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, bacon, cabanossi, beef mince, ham, and a variety of other ingredients

    • 1 1/4 cups waxy potato slices cut into 2mm (1/12″) slices
    • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves selected and loosely packed
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1.5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
    • 130g (1 1/3 cups) mozzarella cheese
    • Preheat the oven to 275°C/530°F, or the highest temperature it can tolerate. Place the oven shelf in the upper third of the oven.
    • To make a pizza foundation, stretch out the dough and place it onto a baking sheet.
    • Place the dish in the oven after following the topping instructions below.
    • Turn the pizza after 4 minutes to ensure equal cooking, and check it after 8 minutes (even if recipe says 10 minutes). If the cheese becomes too brown, remove it as soon as possible.

    Pepperoni

    • Spread the pizza sauce over the base, then top with the cheese.
    • Bake the pizza after distributing the pepperoni on top.

    Supreme

    • Spread the pizza sauce over the base, then top with the cheese.
    • Distribute the remaining ingredients over the pizza and bake until golden brown.

    Ham & Pineapple

    • Sauce and cheese should be spread on top of the pizza dough.
    • Bake the pizza with the remaining ingredients on top.

    BBQ Meatlovers

    • Spread barbecue sauce over the bottom of the pan, then top with cheese.
    • Distribute the remaining ingredients over the pizza and bake until golden brown.

    Garlic Butter Prawns & Chilli

    • Season the prawns/shrimp with salt and pepper.
    • In a large skillet or heavy frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat until it is foaming. Cook for another 30 seconds after adding the garlic.
    • On one side, cook the prawns for 1 minute, or until they are just beginning to brown. Cook for another 1 minute before removing the prawns. Keep the garlic butter aside.
    • Spread the pizza sauce over the base, then top with the cheese.
    • Place the other ingredients (excluding the rocket) on top of the pizza and top with the prawns. Bake until the potatoes are tender
    • Drizzle the prawns with the leftover garlic butter and sprinkle with the rocket

    Sausage & Kale

    • Spread the pizza sauce over the base, then top with the cheese.
    • Bake the pizza with the remaining ingredients once you’ve strewn them on top. (See also Note 2).

    Margherita

    • Pizza sauce should be spread over the base. Bake for 15 minutes after drizzling 1 tablespoon of oil over the base.
    • Remove the pizza from the oven after 5 minutes. Buffalo mozzarella should be shredded into 10 pieces and distributed over the pizza. Continue to bake the pizza until it is done.
    • To finish, drizzle with the remaining olive oil and sprinkle with basil leaves.

    Capricciosa

    • Spread the pizza sauce over the base, then top with the cheese.
    • Distribute the remaining ingredients over the pizza and bake until golden brown.

    Quattro Formaggio (Four Cheese Pizza)

    Spread mozzarella cheese over the bottom of the pan. Provolone, parmesan, and finally blue cheese should be sprinkled over the pie. Bake.

    Prosciutto & Rocket

    • Pizza sauce should be spread over the base, followed by cheese. 1 tablespoon oil should be drizzled over the pizza before baking
    • remove the pizza from the oven 2 minutes before it is done. Wrap the prosciutto around the pizza in a casual manner.
    • Continue to bake until the cake is done. Sprinkle rocket on top of the pizza and sprinkle with a little extra olive oil if desired.

    Cheese & Garlic

    • Spread the pizza sauce over the base, then top with the cheese.
    • Scatter the other ingredients over the pizza, taking extra care to evenly distribute the garlic to avoid large clumps, and bake until golden brown.

    Potato & Rosemary

    • Spread mozzarella cheese over the bottom of the pan
    • Arrange potato slices across the pizza, with each slice overhanging no more than a third of the previous slice to ensure that the pizza is fully cooked through.
    • Drizzle the olive oil over the top and sprinkle with the rosemary and salt to taste. Bake for the amount of time specified in the recipe. Make sure the potato is soft by poking it with a fork or skewer. If the chicken isn’t fully done, heat for another 2 minutes.

    • Cheese – it is recommended to use freshly grated cheese for pizza since it melts easier and provides greater coverage (store purchased cheese is typically thicker batons, requiring more for the same coverage, resulting in a heavier pizza).
    • Also coated with an anti-caking chemical, which has a negative impact on melting quality).

    • Sausage – Because raw sausage balls are so small, they will cook quickly at the high oven temperatures.
    • It’s possible to merely ″crumble″ uncooked sausage all over the pizza instead, if you’re concerned, but most pizza restaurants use little balls instead.

    To list all toppings for pizza is impossible as the list is only restricted to the restrictions imposed by your imagination. Even popular pizza toppings are not easy to categorize when the Americans prefer pepperoni and the Japanese favor squid. Having said that prefered pizza toppingsare individual, I have attempted to compile a list of pizza toppings without using esoteric marshmallow and squid ink! Pizza is so universal that a pizza chef somewhere will have added every type of food known to man on a pizza, for sure an Aborigine will have popped a witchetty grub on a pizza somewhere, the witchetty grub being the larvae of the ghost moth. Equally a Thai pizza chef will have used green ants at some time. Crickets are a delicacy in Burma. Whilst I regard it as unlikely that a chef has not combined all of these three toppings on a pizza I am not going to put any money on it! Should any one want to try to put green ants on the pizza they are better as a garnish they should never be cooked it destroys the Vitamin C and it as their Vitamin C content that makes them a valuable food source.

    Pizza topping ideas

    • Cheese — stick to the classics with a good piece of mozzarella, or get creative with cheddar or parmesan
    • To add protein to your dish, consider adding shredded chicken, cooked mince, pulled pork, spicy sausage, bacon, crispy tofu, or even a fried egg to the mix.
    • Veggies – include vegetables such as onions, peppers, mushrooms, courgette, aubergine, broccoli, and olives in your diet.
    • For some added color, toss in a handful of leafy greens such as rocket, spinach, or basil.
    • BBQ sauce, chilli oil, or peri peri sauce are all good choices for a drizzling sauce.

    Pizza recipes

    1) Chicken tikka masala pizzas

    With these simple chicken tikka masala pizzas, you can combine two takeout favorites in one dish. Naan breads are topped with spicy chicken, green peppers, natural yogurt, mango chutney, and coriander, and the dish is complete. This quick and easy supper can be put together in just 20 minutes.

    2) Sausage & pesto pizza

    Simple ingredients combine to create these cheesy sausage and pesto pizzas, which are perfect for a quick and simple takeout-style supper. Garnish a frozen pizza dough with tomato sauce, pig sausage, buffalo mozzarella, fresh pesto, and basil leaves before baking it in the oven.

    This brightly colored supper is a wonderful way for children to get their five-a-day. Combine two simple pizza bases with mozzarella cherries, red and yellow tomatoes, sprouting broccoli, green olives, fresh pesto, and basil leaves to make a pizza masterpiece.

    With this vegetarian spinach and blue cheese pizza, you may experiment with a more unusual pizza topping. Make your own pizza foundation using wholewheat spelt flour for a healthier alternative. Then add crumbled blue cheese, mushrooms, green spinach, red onions, and walnuts to finish off the dish.

    5) Frying pan pizza with aubergine, ricotta & mint

    Cooking your pizza on the stovetop in a frying pan will guarantee that the base is extra crispy.     • Finish by sprinkling balsamic vinegar over the top of the pizza and adding the fennel mixture, halved figs, and crumbled gorgonzola.
