Absence of Canadian visitors leaves void in Old Orchard Beach

      1. OLD ORCHARD BEACH (California) — Sarah Alexander prepared for the news concerning the border between the United States and Canada as if she were witnessing a space shuttle launch.
      2. The manager of the Beau Rivage Motel, who was talking on FaceTime with her mother in Montreal, held her breath, counted down the minutes, and thought of the long-time customers from Quebec who had booked holidays for late August.
      3. They were all hoping that, after 16 months, the United States would finally open its borders to non-essential travel and that they would be able to squeeze in a last-minute summer vacation at Old Orchard Beach before the season ended.
      4. However, the announcement made on July 21 did not provide them with the information they were hoping for.
      5. It is expected that the border between the United States and Canada would stay blocked until at least August 21, despite the fact that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said only two days before that Canada will allow properly vaccinated Americans to visit beginning on August 9.
      6. ″It came as quite a shock,″ Alexander said.

″I believe a large number of individuals believed that the vaccination was the solution.Maine was doing so well until Canada passed us by with immunizations, and we were devastated. It seemed like a snowball was rolling down the hill, and everything was going well. Then they locked the door behind them.″ The pandemic shattered decades of tradition in Old Orchard Beach, which had been a favourite destination for French-Canadian visitors for centuries prior to the outbreak. In addition to servicing tourists from other northeast states, many of whom were eager to travel but were not yet ready or able to fly abroad, many companies that rely largely on Canadian customers have remained busy this summer serving visitors from other northeast states.

      1. Although the Canadians have been absent for a second summer, their absence has been noticed and, for many, has been disappointing.
      2. ‘The general mood of Old Orchard Beach has a distinct French Canadian flavor to it,’ says the author.
      3. ″It’s simply gone now,″ Alexander explained.
      4. ″It’s definitely a different experience.
      1. ″It took away that classic sense,″ says the author.

      2. Janet Mills and the governors of other New England states called on federal officials to open the border in a safe manner.
      3. Maine Governor Janet Mills said in a statement following the judgment on July 21 that ″the state of Maine is intimately tied to our Canadian neighbors.″ It is our economic, cultural, and familial bonds that bind us together.
      4. It is our choice to extend the border shutdown on our end that only serves to weaken these links, harm local businesses, and isolate families, particularly in northern and eastern Maine, where family in Canada will be unable travel here to see their loved ones.″ According to the United States Travel Association, each month that the border is closed costs the country $1.5 billion.
      5. According to the Maine Office of Tourism, travelers from Canada spent about $1.2 billion in Maine in 2019.
      6. They spent $329 million in Maine retailers, accounting for over one-fifth of all tourism-related retail purchases in the state, according to the Maine Retail Association.
      • That year, 5.4 million Canadians came to Maine for day trips and overnight stays, accounting for nearly half of all tourists.
      • Many people in Old Orchard Beach believe that six out of ten summer tourists are from Canada, but no one appears to be able to explain where this number came from or how true it was.
      • During a normal summer, it is usual to hear tourists conversing in French while sitting on the beach, strolling along the historic pier, or waiting for dinner at one of the many eateries that along Old Orchard Street.
      • Business owners in the area are holding out hope that the border would reopen in late August, allowing for last-minute visits from long-time Canadian tourists who, according to them, are ready to return to the town to do business.
      • According to Allan Buotte, who owns Pier Fries with his wife, Tiffany, ″these individuals coming to Old Orchard (from Canada) are of a different generation.″ ″They were brought here by their grandpa, and now they’re bringing their grandchildren.″ They’re creatures of habit, to be sure.

They use the same motels and campgrounds, as well as eating at the same restaurants.″ During the day on Wednesday, Allan and Tiffany Buotte are behind the counter of Pier French Fries, the restaurant they run in Old Orchard Beach.According to the Buottes, they miss seeing some of the familiar faces of the French-Canadian tourist, but that business has been brisk with a large number of visitors traveling to the beach from surrounding Northeastern states.Brianna Soukup is a staff photographer with the Associated Press.

‘THE SAME PEOPLE WOULD BE HERE,’ says the MC.Around 1853, visitors from Quebec began flocking to Old Orchard Beach, traveling by train from Montreal to Portland to enjoy the beach.Dan Blaney, the town historian, explained that after landing in Portland, they would take the Portland-Saco-Portsmouth railroad to the western border of Old Orchard Beach, where they would then take stagecoaches to the beach to relax.

According to Blaney, ″Quebec is nearly a straight shot all the way down here.″ It was the beach that drew the most attention. The Portland to Berwick train was expanded to pass straight through downtown in 1873, resulting in an increase in the number of tourists.Several large hotels and other attractions were constructed along the shore, establishing the town as a popular summer destination for both rich and working-class Quebecers alike.Even in these modern times, it is typical to see signs in French greeting guests from Canada. The Canadian flag is flown outside many hotels and campers around the country.

The Museum in the Streets signage, which emphasize local history in the downtown area, are available in both English and French. Each year, during the summer months of July and August, a large number of French-Canadian families that vacation in Old Orchard Beach return to the same hotels and campgrounds. The sandy beach stretches for seven miles and is the closest ocean beach to Quebec. On Friday, Sarah Alexander, the manager of the Beau Rivage Property in Old Orchard Beach, stands outside the motel. Most years the motel receives a mix of guests from both the United States and Canada; but, for the past two summers, the motel and other businesses in the town have been deprived of Canadian tourists since the border remains closed to noncommercial travel.

Alexander, the manager of the Beau Rivage Motel, said she had become acquainted with many of her Canadian guests.Carl D.Walsh/Staff Photographer During the off-season, they keep in touch, and she enjoys watching their children grow up.In addition, their frequent trips offered a reliable source of revenue for the hotel. In addition, she explained, ″we knew the same group of people would be in the same room for the same week every year.″ ″The inability to get weekly or five-day rentals from our Canadian friends was a major source of frustration for us.″ Before the pandemic closed the border, Francis Talbot, his wife, and their two children traveled to the United States on road trips from their home near Montreal four or five times a year, depending on the season.Every August, they took a weeklong vacation at Old Orchard Beach, where they were occasionally joined by additional family members and friends.

They adore both the people and the setting, and they are disappointed that they will not be able to spend more time at the beach, according to him.″Maine is a favorite of ours,″ he continued.″The people and the setting appeal to us.″ After holding out hope that the border would be reopened in time for their beach trip, Talbot and his family have decided to spend their summer vacation in Quebec City this year instead of the beach. When it comes to travels to Maine, he says, ″that’s something that’s been lacking from our life.″ On Wednesday, the Inn at Soho Square was open at Old Orchard Beach.Brianna Soukup is a staff photographer with the Associated Press. The Beau Rivage, like other accommodation establishments in town, has witnessed an increase in tourists this year from New York and New England areas, as well.

Alexandra worries if Old Orchard Beach will continue to be a popular destination for French-Canadians, even though she hears from many of her Canadian clients who have optimistically booked bookings for the end of the summer.A part of her is concerned that the new staycations they’ve discovered in the area will be sufficient for them now that they’ve done it for two years in a row, she explained. There is no place quite like Old Orchard Beach, though. The province of Quebec does not have such a facility.Prior to the pandemic, over 90 percent of the guests at the Ne’re Beach Family Campground came from Canada, according to records.

According to owner Alan Weinstein, their absence last year had a disastrous effect on the company.Because of this, the campsite relied on Paycheck Protection Program loans and other assistance to make ends meet.It also switched away from daily and weekly rentals in favor of seasonal rentals in order to survive.According to Weinstein, more and more of the guests are Mainers or individuals who have come to work in the city for the summer.

      • In his words, ″we’ve seen a whole new group of folks that we’ve never seen before.″ ″If (the Canadians) come back, we won’t have any space in our campsite.″ Just off the main drag in Old Orchard Beach, George Kalperis owns and maintains George’s Parking, which is located just off the main drag.
