    The origins of pizza in the United States may be traced back to Italian immigrants in New York.In 1905, Gennaro Lombardi founded the first pizza in what is now known as Little Italy, a neighborhood in the heart of Manhattan.Lombardi’s pizza, which was made in the traditional New York manner with a coal oven and thin crust, is credited with starting the entire lineage of NYC pizza.

    1. The pizzamakers taught at Lombardi’s eventually expanded throughout the city and opened second generation establishments that have survived to this day, including Totonno’s in Brooklyn in 1924 and John’s of Bleecker Street in 1929, among others.
