The fact that pizza contains calcium from the cheese and disease-fighting lycopene from the tomatoes are among its advantages. A Nutritional Take On the Kraft and AND Fiasco

The 30th of March, 2015 ″Your items are a complete waste of time.″ ″Is it really true that you’re marketing your ‘cheese’ as a health food now?″ ″And it’s aimed towards children?″ you may wonder.″How do you deal with the embarrassment that comes with what you do?″ I find it incredible that nutritionists and dieticians continue to sell this poisonous garbage on trusting, gullible families while passing it off as ‘food’ Among the optimistic, joyful recipes, news, and other apparently pleasant PR-speak on the Kraft Foods Facebook page are a few awkwardly caustic remarks that are interspersed across the page.In the movie Never Been Kissed, there’s a moment in which all of the beauty queens are coated in dog chow, and this juxtaposition reminds me of that.People (including many nutritionists and dieticians) have been taken aback by Kraft’s Singles’ apparent recent induction into the end-all-be-all of the health world after receiving the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) seal of approval, the logo from their Kids Eat Right initiative, and the AND seal of approval, respectively (we wrote a great article about it here).Kids Eat Right is a program that promotes nutrition education for children and their families, as well as the prevention of childhood obesity and overweight. In its campaign, The Alliance for Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) states that while the processed cheese product slices are not technically a ″health food,″ Kraft is a major (read: financially advantageous) backer of the effort.

As a thank you, the AND grants Kraft permission to use the campaign’s emblem in promotional materials.Following that, nutritionists, dieticians, and customers slammed both companies, causing widespread outrage. In terms of ingredients, no, a ″processed cheese product″ is not a health food, as you might expect. However, while I, as a dietitian, believe that practically all foods may be included in a balanced diet, these slices (which must be referred to as ″cheese products″ owing to the lack of genuine cheese in them) are not considered to be particularly nutritious. The consumption of cupcakes, soda, and french fries can all make their way into a healthy diet at some time, but they are by no means ″healthy,″ as the term ″healthy″ implies. It is not a matter of children eating well because they are eating Kraft singles, but rather of children eating well despite the fact that they are eating Kraft singles.

Most people, if not everyone, who sees a label on a food item that reads ″Kids Eating Properly″ is going to make the reasonable and understandable assumption that a child eating that specific food item is ″eating right″ and that the food item in question is ″healthy.″ In addition, what should parents do when they are attempting to ensure that their children consume nutritious foods? You, on the other hand, purchase nutritious meals. Also, you cook their breakfasts, lunches, and dinners from nutritious ingredients. If you’re going to read a label at the grocery store that says ″healthy,″ by golly, it’s going to be a label that takes the guesswork out of figuring out what’s healthy for your children.

  • Children Eat Right″ is the slogan that says it all: ″Kids Eat Right,″ which is endorsed by professional healthy eaters all across the world (after all, that’s what the AND is made of, right?) Kraft singles, on the other hand, are no more ″healthy″ than any other processed food (or cheese product, for that matter) in terms of nutrients.
  • So, what was the reasoning behind the AND’s decision to place its logo on the blue cellophane packaging?
  • Obviously, money is involved.
  • Kraft paid AND a ″undisclosed″ sum of money in exchange for allowing their Kids Eat Right branding to appear on Kraft’s packaging, in what has become an old-fashioned technique to reap profits from sponsorships.
  • Because Kraft is such a huge supporter, the AND explained it away as follows: That, however, is just nonsense.

Not because Kraft put a number on an Easy Cheese-covered napkin and handed it down the table to the AND, but rather because the AND executive committee went completely insane with cash. When you first glance at the numbers on the back of a Kraft singles package, you might not think they are significant.Approximately 60 calories are contained in each Original slice, as well as four grams of total fat, 2.5 grams of which are saturated fat, and 200 milligrams of salt.Never assume that I forgot about the one gram of sugar in each slice.

  1. Even if I hadn’t known, milk includes naturally occurring sugars, thus it’s expected that a little amount would be present in this ″cheese product.″ The percentages for the 2 percent cuts are slightly different.
  2. In each slice, 45 calories are provided, as well as 2.5 grams of total fat, of which 1.5 grams are saturated.
  3. The sodium content is 230 milligrams per slice, and there are two grams of sugar every slice, rather than merely one gram.
  4. However, here’s a little nutrition lesson for you: On a Nutrition Facts label, take note of the percentages that are stated next to the quantities of practically all of the nutrients in the food.

Even though these percentages are typically rejected by customers (since no one ever really tries to explain what they’re truly for), they are useful when it comes to preparing a healthy diet. They are intended to be used in connection with the serving size of a product to indicate that if someone consumes a serving size of Food X, that person will be meeting x percent of the daily need for that specific nutrient in that particular food group. It might be tough to get the percentages to reach 100 percent in some instances (like in the case for many vitamins and minerals). When it comes to salt levels, for example, it’s far too simple to go to 100 percent of the way there.

  • For example, most healthy persons who consume 2000 calories per day should not take more than 2,300 mg of salt per day, according to the American Heart Association (sodium is measured in milligrams on the Nutritional Facts label).
  • In reality, the nutritional information on food labels is based on the consumption of 2,000 calories per day by these folks.
  • In other words, when you see that a food item has 230 milligrams of sodium per serving, you’ll also see that the percentage that shows directly next to it, 10 percent, refers to how much sodium you will be ingesting in relation to your allocated ″limit″ for that food item.
  • For example, if you consume one meal that has 10 percent fat, another that contains 5 percent fat, another that contains 25 percent fat, and so on, you can simply add up how quickly you’re getting to 100 percent fat throughout the day (or, the 2,300 milligram-limit).
  • However, keep in mind that these percentages are for an adult’s diet.

In this case, an adult who consumes 2,000 calories per day is considered obese.Consequently, children’s calorie requirements and the quantity of salt, saturated fat, and other nutrients they should consume are different from those of adults. These infographics from the American Heart Association are a great way to illustrate the differences in calorie requirements between different age groups.

  1. One can see that children 2 years old and older require a calorie intake ranging from 1000 to more than 2000 calories, and that the quantity of fat they consume should be between 25 and 35 percent of their overall calorie intake, and if it’s saturated fat, that’s even better.
  2. No more than ten percent of total calories should come from this source.
  3. As a result, a 4-year-old girl who consumes 1200 calories per day should consume no more than 300–420 calories from fat (about 33–46 grams of fat per day), with only 120 calories (or 13 grams) of saturated fat being consumed.
  4. The fat in a slice of Kraft singles is 4 grams, which accounts for 12 percent of the total amount of fat that a youngster should be ingesting on that day.

There isn’t much room for a processed cheese product among the many other fat-containing foods that children could be eating instead (such as milk, yogurt, oils, avocados with healthy fats, and real cheese). Is there really any room for a processed cheese product among the relatively small, limited amount of daily allowable fat?Furthermore, in addition to nuts, lean meat, and legumes, shouldn’t the highest emphasis be given to better-for-you fats such as the ones described above in addition to saturated fats and trans fats?″Kraft singles, on the other hand, are high in calcium.″Don’t kids need calcium?″ you might wonder.Yes, calcium is present in Kraft singles, which is the one and only possible redeeming characteristic of the individually wrapped slices.

  1. Real milk, on the other hand, contains calcium.
  2. Calcium is found in genuine cheese.
  3. Calcium may be found in spinach, kale, and other leafy greens.
  4. I know, I know, telling you that your 4-year-old would eat anything that is leafy or green is like telling a well…

child to eat veggies. But hear me out. Please remember that calcium is contained in children’s chewable vitamins!

  • And those are very popular with children.
  • Using processed cheese products as the vehicle for calcium is not the best strategy to ensure that your children get adequate calcium without jeopardizing the future health of their developing hearts.
  • Alternatively, it can serve as a carrier for any nutrient.
  • There are considerably more effective and healthier methods of encouraging children to eat properly than relying on fake cheese.

The benefits to public health and nutrition that will result from this are well worth it.

Sicilian Pizza Nutrition Information

In a kitchen, a chef is preparing a pizza.Credit for the image goes to stockvisual/iStock/Getty Images.Pizza is quite popular in the United States. It is estimated that one out of every eight Americans consumes a piece of pizza on a daily basis by the Agricultural Research Service.A slice of Sicilian pizza differs from a piece of typical cheese pizza in several ways.Sicilian pizza is made with a thick crust and is either square or rectangular in shape.

It also has a different nutritional profile than regular pizza, and it may have more calories, fat, and salt than a traditional pizza pie.

Whoa! Watch Those Calories

Four hundred and eighty-six calories are contained in one slice of Sicilian cheese pizza, which is one-sixteenth of a whole sheet.A slice of cheese pizza from a 14-inch pie, on the other hand, contains 285 calories per slice. We must emphasize that calorie content in pizza, both Sicilian and conventional, differs depending on who produces the pie. However, having a general notion of the number of calories in a standard slice may assist you in keeping track of your intake for better weight management results.

High in Unhealthy Fat

Considering the amount of cheese used, it may come as no surprise that Sicilian pizza is heavy in fat, particularly saturated fat. There are 20 grams of total fat in one slice as well as 8 grams of saturated fat (and 46 mg of cholesterol). If you eat 2,000 calories a day, the American Heart Association recommends that you consume fewer than 7 percent of your calories from saturated fat, or no more than 16 grams of saturated fat each day.In addition, the American Heart Association recommends that you keep your total cholesterol to less than 300 mg per day.If you consume 2,000 calories per day, one slice of Sicilian cheese pizza will account for 50% of your recommended daily saturated fat limit and 15% of your recommended daily cholesterol limit if you consume 2,000 calories per day.

A Look at the Carbs and Protein

A slice of Sicilian pizza has a lot of carbohydrates and protein.A slice of pizza has 53 grams of carbs and 24 grams of protein in a single serving. To put things in perspective, one slice of pizza contains around the same amount of carbohydrates as three pieces of bread, and it provides almost half of your daily protein requirements. While carbohydrates and protein are elements that your body requires to operate correctly, the sources of these nutrients in pizza – white flour for carbs and cheese for protein – are not the healthiest options available to you.

Too Much Sodium

According to the American Heart Association, the majority of Americans consume too much salt in their diets. When you consume too much salt, you increase your chance of developing high blood pressure, which is a significant cause of mortality in women worldwide. The American Heart Association recommends that you restrict your salt intake to fewer than 1,500 mg per day in order to maintain good heart health. One slice of Sicilian cheese pizza has 1,015 mg of sodium, which is equivalent to two-thirds of a day’s worth of sodium intake.A piece of ordinary cheese pizza, on the other hand, has 640 mg of salt per slice.

Vitamins and Minerals

Sicilian pizza may be rich in fat and salt, but it is an excellent source of calcium, as well as a decent source of vitamin A and iron, according to the American Heart Association. On average, one slice of pizza provides nearly half of the daily recommended calcium intake, 11 percent of the daily recommended vitamin A intake, and 18 percent of the daily recommended iron intake.Getting enough calcium is crucial for bone health, getting enough iron is vital for the formation of red blood cells, and getting enough vitamin A is important for the health of the skin and mucous membranes.

How Many Calories Does Not Eating the Crust Off a Few Slices of Pizza Really Save You?

  • It’s more complicated than you may imagine, and it has more to do with philosophy than with health. We don’t have to argue over a number fundamental universal pizza truths: In addition to the fact that pizza is both necessary and unavoidable, pizza is also one of the most nutritionally deficient foods on the planet. In order to avoid the gloomy, gut-bomb-inducing consequences of pizza, man has undertaken heroic efforts to hack it, to reduce it to some pizza-like configuration that still looks and tastes like pizza but does not have the same negative consequences as pizza. You know, cutting out everything that is legitimately nice and substituting it with something that is genuinely less good? That’s what I’m talking about. There is no condemnation, but it is not for everyone. It’s essentially the Designer Impersonators of perfume, guaranteeing me that Confess is on par with Calvin Klein’s Obsession in terms of quality and longevity. It’s a good bet that you’ll like Saucy if you like pizza. There must be a better way to do things. Take, for example, crusts. Pizza crusts, as important as they may be to the pizza experience, are not required to be used in the preparation of pizza. Without ever biting into that hard, bone-dry, pitiful excuse for a breadstick, you may still enjoy Total Pizza without ever succumbing to its terrible powers. In fact, you can technically diminish the nefarious abilities of the breadstick. In the opinion of Dana Hunnes, a clinical dietitian at UCLA, ″not taking the crust off pizza might save you between 50 and 75 calories each slice, as well as 5 to 10 grams of carbohydrate per slice.″ ″If you’re the type of person who can eat half a pizza in one sitting, you could save 200 to 300 calories and 20 to 40 grams of carbohydrate by doing so,″ says the author (depending on the size and thickness of the pizza). Some more pizza math for you: It takes around 250 calories to consume an average slice of cheese (and approximately 400 calories to consume a heaping mound of meat on top of that cheese, which, of course, is how God intended)
  • The average individual consumes around three pieces of food every sitting.
  • Prior to decrusting, this amounts to between 750 and 1,200 calories.
  • After decrusting, however, the calorie count rises to 600 to 900 per serving.

Obviously, whether or not you allow those crusts to wither and perish in the box has as much to do with your crust philosophy and personal history as it does with your physical and mental health and fitness.I, for one, don’t eat the crusts on my sandwiches. Why?Perhaps it’s the phrase ″crust,″ which immediately conjures up images of physical crust, ocular crust, crust punk, and the earth’s crust in one’s mind.Possibly because I worked at Pizza Hut when the Stuffed Crust Pizza was first introduced and got really disgusted by the thought of working over those lengthy cheese threads molded into pizza dough.Whatever the case, the crust does not appear to be genuine food to me.

It has a food-like appearance; it serves as a reminder of food, or what the pizza would be like if the pizza didn’t turn out as planned. It’s the handle for the pizza. It’s the end of a pizza bone. It’s the edible rim of the plate that the pizza is served on, and I don’t need a carb spoon to scoop up some ranch dressing since I’ve already consumed all of the excellent pizza pieces. It may just as easily be a single-use wrapper.I’m quite aware that this makes me look like a complete moron.

I also hear that individuals eat the crusts not just last, but sometimes first (nuts!), and that rapper Jadakiss outdid all crust people around when he ordered an all-crust pizza from New York’s Cuts & Slices, causing outrage among many of his followers in the process, and that I recognize that there are other methods to make your pizza healthy without going through all of the steps outlined above, like becoming vegan, using cheese-free sauces, and eliminating carbohydrates from your pizza (not to mention, crustlessness). To be specific, Hunnes states that ″blotting out grease may save you roughly 45 calories per slice, or possibly even slightly more.″ As a result, grabbing a napkin and patting down the pizza until it’s saturated and transparent with artery-clogging oil is more or less the same as choosing not to eat the crusts, and both should be deemed equally acceptable and official options.Having said that, Hunnes does not subscribe to my pessimistic, no-pizza-substitutes mentality and sa
