In 1962, Sam Panopoulos, a Greek-born Canadian, opened the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, where he invented the Hawaiian pizza as we know it today.Panopoulos was inspired in part by his previous expertise making Chinese meals, which frequently combine sweet and salty flavors, and he experimented with toppings such as pineapple, ham, bacon, and other ingredients.Initially, these additions did not meet with widespread approval.The addition of pineapple to the basic tomato sauce and cheese mixture, along with ham or bacon on occasion, quickly gained popularity in the local community and eventually became a standard item in pizzerias all over the world.

In 2014, Time magazine named Hawaiian pizza the most influential pizza of all time, ranking it #1 on their list of ″The 13 Most Influential Pizzas of All Time.″ During a Q&A session with a group of high school students in 2017, Icelandic president Guni Th.Jóhannesson allegedly stated that he was ″fundamentally opposed″ to the practice of adding pineapple on pizza.He went on to say that he would outlaw pineapple as a pizza topping if he had the power to do so, as long as he won 30 percent of the vote from those under the age of 21.Many people, regardless of their preference for Hawaiian pizza, were moved to express
