Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba is a pizza in Naples, Italy, that is widely regarded as the world’s first pizzeria. It opened its doors in 1869.

History

A peddler’s stand since 1738, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba was built in the town center at Via Port’Alba 18 in 1830 and has been serving the local community ever since. The restaurant took the role of street sellers who used to prepare pizza in wood-fired ovens and transport it to the street, keeping it warm on little tin burners that they held on their heads as they worked. It quickly rose to prominence as a popular gathering spot for males on the street.Because the majority of the customers were artists, students, or those with little financial resources, the pizzas prepared were often basic, with toppings such as oil and garlic.A payment method, known as pizza an otto, was created that allowed clients to pay up to eight days after their dish was consumed.

  • If someone died before paying for their dinner, a local joke went around that it may be their final free meal if they had eaten at Port’Alba.
  • The pizzas were also commemorated with poems written by customers.
  • Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba is still in operation today, and it is conveniently placed between a number of bookshops.
  • Several historians believe it to be the world’s very first pizza.

Food

Since the establishment of the restaurant in 1830, the ovens have been lined with lava rocks from the adjacent Mount Vesuvius. At the time of its invention, the Mastunicola pizza, which was topped with lard, sheep milk cheese, and basil, was a popular choice among diners.Fresh basil and oregano were the most often used herbs, while additional toppings included seafood, buffalo mozzarella, cured meats, and cecinielli, a little white fish that is still in the early stages of growth.
