Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack!

Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack! is the first game in the Papa Louie series of platformer games, and it is available on the PlayStation 3. The game was first made available on November 9, 2006.

Description

Today is the day to liberate Papa Louie’s clients! Here’s the experience that got it all started!Papa Louie was having a party at Papa’s Pizzeria when the Infamous Onion Ring managed to infiltrate all of the orders and steal the show.Delicious pizzas were converted into gooey Pizza Monsters, who abducted and teleported all of Papa Louie’s customers to far-off regions, where they remained captive.

Papa Louie must save all of his devoted clients and put an end to the Infamous Onion Ring, armed only with his trusty pizza paddle and a slew of Pepper Bombs in his backpack.

Plot

After preparing free pizza for everyone in his restaurant, Papa’s Pizza (which has a paper glued to its window saying ″Free Pizza for Every Tenant – Today Only!″), Papa Louie gives them to his nephew Roy, and the peppered pizzas suddenly come to life and transform into monstrous creatures as a result of this transformation. In the process, one of the pizza boxes on Roy’s hand gets dislodged, creating a vortex that takes him and Papa Louie to another dimension filled with pizza components (some are cheese and tomato sauce). This vortex contains all of Papa Louie’s clients, who have been imprisoned in cages, and Papa must rescue them in order to obtain the keys that will allow him to enter the boss fight with Sarge. In the meantime, Papa saves his first client (Big Pauly), who happens to be the owner of a pepper business next door to Papa’s Pizza.

He assists Papa Louie by providing him with pepper bombs that are capable of penetrating the Pizza Monsters, with each pepper bomb being worth ten cents. When Papa Louie overcomes Sarge, all of the pizzas revert to their original states.Afterwards, Papa enters Papa’s Pizza and distributes complimentary pizza to each and every client that he has managed to save.

  1. At the conclusion of the game, Papa Louie consumes a piece of pizza, after which the phrase ″Thanks for Playing!″ comes on screen.

Controls and Gameplay

  • In general, Papa Louie is capable of four sorts of movement: walking, jumping, attacking, and gliding.
  • Papa Louie may be moved about by pressing the left and right arrow keys.
  • To have him run in a certain direction, the player must hold down one of the two arrow keys for an extended period of time.
  • Pressing the Spacebar causes Papa Louie to leap, and if the player pushes the Spacebar again while Papa Louie is in mid-air, Papa Louie will begin to glide away.
  • Flying is very important in the Kongregate version of the game since certain of the Kongregate coins can only be obtained by gliding from a specific location.
  • When it comes to attacking, things are a little more tricky.
  • Using his wooden pizza handle, Papa Louie attacks and defeats every adversary (with the exception of Pizza Monsters) when the ″Z″ key is pressed.
  • If the player keeps pressing ″Z″ for a long period of time as Papa walks, Papa Louie begins a poised attack, in which Papa Louie may attack at any point by just pausing and pressing the button.
  1. Take note that when Papa prepares to launch a calculated attack, his steps grow noticeably slower.
  2. By hitting the ″X″ button, Papa Louie may also launch pepper bombs (if he has some on hand).
  3. Papa’s bomb travels through the air in an arc and bounces twice as its height drops as the bomb’s velocity increases.
  4. A key weapon for Papa, pepper bombs are the only thing that can directly penetrate the Pizza Monsters, making them a vital part of his arsenal (when compared to hitting the cheese wad of the monster back to it by using the pizza handle).
  5. The game is divided into four worlds, each of which contains three stages, for a total of 12 stages in the game overall.
  6. Each of the four worlds has a distinct theme.

While the first world is concerned with multigrain fields (which provide the primary raw material for the dough for pizza), the second world is concerned with stages in the spaghetti jungle. The third planet is based on the concept of a tomato sauce metropolis, while the fourth world is based on the topic of mining.Once a player completes the third and final stage of World 4, he or she will be able to participate in the boss battle against Sergeant Crushida Pepper, commonly known as Sarge, who is the game’s main adversary and the master of all of the adversaries.Normally, Papa Louie’s maximum health is 5 full hearts, which is his normal maximum health. The touch with an adversary or a moving object (such as a rolling stone) causes Papa to lose one of his ″hearts,″ which are his life force. If all of the hearts have been drained, Papa Louie will pass out and will be hurled away from the vortex that leads to the stage area.

Regardless of how many times Papa Louie is killed, Papa will continue to enter the vortex unless the player chooses to exit the game completely.Pizza Monsters can be found in a limited number of places in each stage.A level is completed when all of the Pizza Monsters have been transformed into standard pizza boxes, and Papa Louie has lifted the cage by hopping on the left side of the scale while carrying all of the boxes to the finish line.Upon completion of a stage, the player will get the key to the next step from the consumers that he/she has recently liberated.Yellow coins are strewn across the stage in various locations.Bonus points are awarded to the player based on the number of coins he or she collects in each stage.

Large quantities of these coins may be used to purchase pepper bombs from Big Pauly the pepper salesman, with each pepper bomb costing ten coins to purchase. This game also includes 3 Kongregate coins that are dispersed throughout each level, for a total of 36 Kongregate coins that are also part of the badge ″Gourmet Kongregate Supreme,″ which is worth 30 points and is rated to be ″Hard″ in the Kongregate version.

  • This is the first game in the Papa Louie series to include Papa Louie as a playable character, who would subsequently appear in Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack! and Papa Louie 3: When Sundaes Attack! as a playable worker.

  • In addition, there are 36 Kongregate coins placed throughout the stages of the version of the game that was produced particularly for Kongregate (each stage having three Kongregate coins). In addition, if the player of this version is a Kongregate member, collecting these coins will allow him or her to earn the Hard ″Gourmet Kongregate Supreme″ badge, which has a value of 30 Kongregate points.

At the same time, another game called Pizza Panic (by Arcade Lab) was released, and Matt and Tony renamed it ″Papa Lucci: When Pizzas Attack!″ as a result of their collaboration. Eventually, as a result of the above modification, it became ″Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack!″

Unreleased Content

  • The earliest mention of a fifth level, which would have been included in the game before facing Sarge in the final boss encounter Fort Onion, came from a Flipline Blog entry. Any visuals or code started to crash their gaming engines, however, as a result of restrictions in the technology that was available in 2006. The last fight took place in the Sausage Mines as a result of this fifth level being scrapped (proof can be found here)
  • as a result, the fifth level was deleted.
  • In the months before it was established that Sarge would be the major opponent throughout PL:WPA, Matt and Tony developed a slew of anthropomorphic food monsters that Papa Louie would have to overcome in the game. When it was agreed that Sarge would be ″in charge,″ many of these other ideas were thrown out the window. Jumping Green Peppers and Flying Cannolis (both of which are secret and may be accessible via hacks) were among the baddies/weapons that were discarded, and that the existent ones discovered on the code were among the ones that were scrapped: A green pepper villain known as Jumping Green Peppers (enemy12) walks and jumps high in the air from time to time.
  • Flying Cannolis – A cannoli-shaped baddie with the ability to fly. (enemy4) – A wide range of behaviors: flies up and down
  • (enemy5) – A variety of patterns: flies to the left and right
  • Spaghetti Monsters, Cheese Cannons, Eggplants, and Cheese Wheels are all delicious options.

One Cheese Wheel was accidentally left in the game by mistake. Because of the lone wheel, just one Cheese Wheel has featured in future platformer games, as a mark of respect for it.

Quinn’s Q&A: The End of Flash

Question 1: What’s happening with Flash Player?
Answer 1: As you may know, all of our games on our website are built with Flash, and have been designed to be played in browsers that have the Adobe Flash Player plugin.Flash Player gave us the ability to create games that anyone could play right from our website over the last 14 years, and allowed us to distribute those games across hundreds of websites to reach a massive audience and develop a group of amazing fans! Sadly, while Flash has been a part of the Web for over two decades, the companies that make all of the popular web browsers have now decided to remove the Flash Player plugin from their browsers, and Adobe officially announced that Flash Player would no longer be supported after December 2020.
Question 2: What does this mean for games on the website?
Answer 2: Unfortunately all of our web games require the Flash Player to be able to play them, since they’ve been built specifically to use Flash and all of its features and strengths. After December 2020, once the web browser manufacturers remove support for Flash Player, our games won’t be playable on the website anymore. However, we will keep the Flash versions of our games accessible on our website for legacy browsers and any possible future solutions that may develop.
Question 3: Does this affect the mobile apps?
Answer 3: No, this won’t affect any of our Papa’s Gamerias on phones and tablets! In fact, we’ve been working hard to convert all of the existing Papa’s games into apps, so they would still exist in some form after Flash was discontinued.
Question 4: What does this mean for future games?
Answer 4: After our final web game “Papa’s Scooperia” in mid-2018, we’ve spent the past two years working entirely on mobile apps for phones and tablets, so we’ll plan to keep focusing on mobile apps for our games. This includes our next brand-new game “Papa’s Mocharia To Go”, which will be coming to phones and tablets!

Quinn’s Q&A: Flipline, Flash, and Fashion

Question 1: Word on the street is that Flash Player will be fully removed from most browsers by 2020. What does that mean for all the Flash-based browser games on Flipline’s website?
Answer 1: You are right, Flash Player will indeed be gone by 2020, and some browsers will be removing it even earlier next summer. Once that happens, browser-based games that are published in Flash (including all of our web games) will no longer be available. After that point, we will probably be making some changes to our website to focus more on our apps and blog.
Question 2: WHAT? Does that mean you won’t be making any more Flash games?
Answer 2: Unfortunately, yes, Papa’s Scooperia will be our last Flash game published on our website. We started using Flash to make web games all the way back in 2003, when we were still in college. We are proud to be one of the last few Flash developers out there actively making free games for the web. Who knows, Papa’s Scooperia may be historically the last of the big Flash games to be released for browsers. But don’t worry, we definitely plan on making more new games in the future, just not for the web browser. We are also in a constant race to port all your favorite Gamerias into Apps for phones and tablets.
Question 3: What is going on with Papa’s Next Chef 2018 and Kingsley’s Customerpalooza 2018?
Answer 3: Good question! After some long deliberation, we decided to put a hold on future Papa’s Next Chef tournaments. We will miss it dearly this year as I’m sure many of you will too. Unfortunately, since the time between new Gameria launches are increasing beyond a year, having a yearly contest to decide the next chef just wont work right now. However, on the plus side, we have already been working on Kingsley’s Customerpalooza 2018 and it should be coming out in a month or so!
Question 4: What’s the deal with Whippa and Mousse? Why do they dress so similar?
Answer 4: Whippa and Mousse are two new customers featured in Papa’s Scooperia. They have similar taste in clothing because they are siblings and often work together as a team. You can expect more details on this duo when we release each of their Flipdeck Cards!

Quinn’s Q&A: Apps, Games, and Contests

Question 1: You have been making lots of Apps lately. Are you still planning on making browser based games in the future?
Answer 1: Well, we have 13 Gamerias on the web right now, with Papa’s Sushiria being the newest. We have been extra busy trying to remake them as phone and tablet apps. We will still be releasing browser games. In fact, we are already in early development of the next browser-based Gameria.
Question 2: What happened to Foodini’s Friday Games?
Answer 2: Foodini’s Friday Games have been a staple of our blog since 2012. However, if you have been noticing over the last year, we have slowly been phasing out the amount of Foodini’s Friday Games on our site. We started off with 3 new games a week. Then we dropped it to 2 new games a week and a classic from the past. Then 1 new game and 2 classics. Soon, it became just the classics. Ultimately, the pool of quality Flash games has been diminishing, so there wasn’t much to choose from and we needed to wrap it all up.
Question 3: Will Customerpalooza be back this year?
Answer 3: Yes, we are working on it right now! If all goes well, it should be out by the end of the month.

Quinn’s Q&A: BBQ, Chicory Cafe, and McCoy!

Question 1: In Papa Louie 2, what are the trees in BBQ Bog and the Saucelands made of?
Answer 1: That area of Munchmore is themed like many barbecue restaurants, which is why you’ll find hills that look like checkered tablecloths, bridges made of sausages, and these unique trees that seem to be topped with cole slaw instead of leaves. You’ll also find lots ofmetal pipes in the area, carrying that delicious barbecue sauce to other areas of the land!
Question 2: What do they serve at the Chicory Café in Portallini?
Answer 2: The Chicory Café is a popular place in town to grab a cup of freshly brewed coffee or a delicious espresso beverage. Each morning they serve a new special blend of coffee, and the regulars love to stop in and try the latest flavor before heading to work.
Question 3: What inspired you to create the Cactus McCoy series?
Answer 3: We had previously worked on a short game for Lionsgate Films based on the Expendables movie, which was designed like a classic retro platformer with each character wielding a different weapon. As we were working on the game, we originally wanted one of the characters to fight hand-to-hand by punching other enemies, and had him hitting and juggling the enemies in the air.Lionsgate ultimately decided on a different weapon for him to use, but we were still interested in the idea of a platformer where you could fight with a weapon or choose to use your fists. We later took this idea and expanded on it with a variety of weapons that both the main character AND the enemies could use, combining elements of shooting, melee, and brawling into a single new game.At one point we also saw the word “enemigo” used in a description of our Papa Louie game on a Spanish-speaking website, which gave us the idea of using a Southwest or Wild West theme for the game (and for using the name “Enemigos” for the bands of outlaws that Cactus McCoy fights).

  • The pizzas, on the other hand, spring to life and attempt to assault Papa Louie while he is preparing for the celebration.
  • With his pizza paddle, Papa Louie fends them off.
  • But suddenly Roy, Papa’s nephew and pizza delivery guy, walks into the kitchen, carrying a pizza in his hands.
  • As a result of Roy dropping the pizza out of fright, a vortex opens and pulls Papa Louie and Roy into Munchmore, a parallel universe where everything is composed of food and no one can escape!
  • Papa Louie and Roy are successful in returning to their own planet, and they even manage to save one of their clients along the way.
  • As soon as he returns to the Pizzeria, Roy informs Papa Louie that he has delivered the wicked pizzas to every single client in the building, implying that they, too, have been abducted and sent to Munchmore.
  • Despite Papa and Roy’s objections, Papa Louie agrees to return to Munchmore and rescue all of his customers.
  1. Big Pauly, the first customer that Papa and Roy had rescued, volunteers to assist Papa Louie by giving him special pepper bombs in exchange for coins that Papa Louie collects while in Munchmore.
  2. After navigating through a variety of terrains, Papa Louie discovers the mastermind behind the kidnappings: Sergeant Crushida Pepper (better known as Sarge), a giant onion who is the leader of a gang of evil onions in Munchmore known as the Infamous Onion Ring.
  3. Sarge is a giant onion who is the leader of a gang of evil onions in Munchmore known as the Infamous Onion Ring.
  4. Sarge had managed to smuggle tainted pepper shakers into the Pizzeria prior to the day of the pizza party, which is how Papa’s pizzas were transformed into monsters and gateways to Munchmore on the day of the celebration.
  5. Papa fights Sarge and beats him, returning to the Pizzeria afterwards to rejoice with the rest of the patrons who have joined him in his mission.

Gameplay

  • In all, there are 14 stages in Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack!
  • They are divided into three sections: a tutorial stage, 12 standard levels split across four planets, and a boss battle with Sarge in the conclusion.
  • The primary objective of each level (apart from the monster stage) is to assist Papa Louie in reaching the conclusion of the stage, where he will discover a massive cage housing two of his clients.
  • It is necessary for Papa Louie to beat every Pizza Monster he finds in the level in order to change them back into normal pizzas and then bring them with him to the cage so that he may use their combined weight to unlock the cage by standing on a nearby pulley system and lifting the cage up.
  • The next level is unlocked once the previous one has been completed.
  • Aside from Pizza Monsters, the levels contain a variety of other foes who attempt to obstruct Papa Louie’s progress.
  • They attack in a variety of methods and cause him to lose one HP if they are successful in inflicting harm.
  • You begin each level with 5 health points; if Papa Louie runs out of health, the level is lost and you must start again from the beginning.
  1. Fortunately, levels provide power-ups such as hearts, which may be used to refill health, among other things.
  2. Each level also has three large red Papa Coins that are buried around the level; the game keeps track of which ones you discover, but they don’t appear to have any purpose other than to raise your overall score.

Pick-Ups

  • Coin: A unit of currency that may be used to purchase Pepper Bombs from Big Pauly
  • each Pepper Bomb costs 10 coins.
  • Restores 1 HP through the heart.
  • Pepper Bomb: This item increases Papa Louie’s ammunition by one Pepper Bomb. Throwing Pepper Bombs may be done by holding down the space bar
  • when you do so, the thrown Pepper Bomb bounces across the ground and explodes either on contact with the ground or after a certain amount of time has passed, whichever occurs first. If Papa Louie gets too close to the explosion, he might be wounded as a result of it.
  • Papa Coin: Provides a significant scoring boost

Enemies

  • Unripe Tomato: Staggers around in one area and bounces every now and again
  • Tosses the onion about
  • walks back and forth
  • Red Tomato: This character jumps throughout the level.
  • Party Sub: Moves about in huge groupings, back and forth
  • Onion: Climbs up and down ladders
  • Brown Onion:
  • The Jumping Onion: He leaps from time to time as he wanders back and forth
  • ‘Ambush Onion’ is a character who hides in the background and pops out when Papa Louie goes too close.
  • Tribal Jumping Onion: Similar to a Jumping Onion, however it leaps more frequently.
  • Onion, the Tribal Guard: Onion, the Tribal Guard, stands still and thrusts his spear at Papa Louie when he approaches
  • Onion, the Tribal Warrior: Onion chases after Papa Louie and attempts to ram him with his spear.
  • Cheese Wheel: This wheel rotates back and forth.
  • A miner onion is a clingy creature that climbs walls and ceilings and then falls when Papa Louie goes beneath them.
  • After being hit by Papa Louie’s spitball, the Pizza Monster hops back and forth, spitting cheese balls in his direction (Papa Louie can free himself by jumping three times). This creature can only be vanquished by whacking its own cheese ball back at it, or by dropping a Pepper Bomb on it.
  • Sarge is the game’s last boss and the most difficult to defeat. He begins the encounter by standing on a platform that is out of reach for Papa Louie, while two Pizza Monsters stationed beneath conveyor belts that cover the majority of the floor throw cheeseballs upward in an arc. After some time has passed, Sarge fires three Pepper Bombs at Papa Louie before dropping to the ground. As a result, Papa Louie can use one of the Pizza Monsters’ cheese balls to push Sarge into a corner, therefore trapping him. Sarge can be injured after becoming stuck, and he will then climb back up to the out-of-reach platform to begin the cycle all over again. Sarge must be defeated seven times before he is defeated.

Scrapped Enemies

  • These are enemies that were originally planned to appear in the game but were removed after it was determined that the Onions would be the primary antagonists of the title. Two of these enemies (the Green Pepper and the Flying Cannoli) are still present in the game’s code and can be seen in action by hacking them into the game’s environment. The Cheese Cannons ended up being used in Papa Louie 2: The Return of the King. When Burgers Launch an Assault! Papa Louie is occasionally approached by Green Pepper, who occasionally makes a high jump towards him.
  • Cannoli that flies back and forth or up and down is called a flying cannoli.
  • The Cheese Cannon fires globs of cheese that ensnare Papa Louie if he is hit by one of them.
  • Eggplant, Army Onion, Spaghetti Monster, to name a few.

Trivia

  • The original title for this game was Pizza Panic, but that name had already been used by another developer. Because then, the title was changed to Papa Lucci: When Pizzas Attack!, which was later modified to Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack! after the creators recognized that some people might not know how to pronounce Lucci properly.
  • A fifth world called Fort Onion was supposed to be included, with military-themed enemies such as Army Onions and Cheese Cannons, and the battle with Sarge was supposed to take place in the third level of Fort Onion
  • however, the game engine Flipline was using at the time couldn’t handle it, and they were forced to abandon the idea. To pay respect to this, characters such as Fort Onion, the Army Onions, and the Cheese Cannons appeared in the film Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack.
  • The Cheese Wheel was originally intended to be removed from the game altogether, but the makers failed to remove one from World 3, and it quickly became popular among players. Since then, a single Cheese Wheel (or Cheesecake Wheel in the case of Papa Louie 3) has appeared in both sequels to Papa Louie: The Legend Continues and Papa Louie: The Legend Continues. When Pizzas Attack! is being released as a homage to the original game
  • This is the only game in the Papa Louie series to have any form of voice acting
