I Met The Founder of Book It! And Here’s How It Started

When I met Bud Gates for the first time at a dinner party in Kansas in 2017, I had no clue that he would go on to impact my life — and the lives of countless others. His arsenal consists of books and pizza.During a late-night conversation at the Wichita Art Museum, which had been turned into an elegant candlelight dinner setting, I learnt that Gates was a key contributor to the creation of the Pizza Hut Book It!program.

Introduction

This program, which was created by the pizza juggernaut to encourage elementary-school age children to read more in the 1980s and 1990s, may be of interest to those of you who were less interested in cheese, toppings, and Judy Blume during that time period.Simply read to complete a certificate, collect stickers and fill out your button, then redeem your button for a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza® from Pizza Hut, and you were done. The program introduced me to a plethora of Choose Your Own Adventure books while I was growing up in Georgia and then Texas. It was also a nice opportunity for my family to go out at a restaurant on occasion. It also played a role in igniting my lifelong passion for reading. Here is a collection of my favorite books and book-related blog entries.

All of this flashed before my eyes as I sat next to Bud Gates at the Wichita Art Museum’s annual banquet.Where did Book It!originate from and what made it so great were questions I had to answer for myself.

The strange origins of Book It!

It is necessary to go to another megabrand, Pepsi, in order to understand the origins of chain restaurant literacy. Two brothers, Frank and Dan Carney, are said to have started Pizza Hut by borrowing $600 from their mother to open a pizzeria in Wichita, Kansas, according to company legend. The original Pizza Hut establishment opened its doors in 1958, and the first franchised facility opened its doors in Topeka, Kansas, two years later, in 1959.PepsiCo acquired Pizza Hut in 1977, bringing their food and beverage empires even closer together. When PepsiCo acquired Wilson Sporting Goods, Yum Businesses, KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Frito-Lay and Mug Root Beer, the company held a slew of other brands as well.In March 1979, Gates began working at Pizza Hut after a successful career at Wilson Sporting Goods.

When he first arrived in Wichita, he became instant friends with Art Gunther, the company’s president.Gates and Gunther, along with their spouses, were out to dinner one evening when they began talking about the Gunthers’ kid, who had been having difficulty learning to read. They began to wonder what would happen if they handed pizza to children as a reward for good reading habits. It was hoped that they would bring their hungry and thirsty parents along with them as well.Afterwards, they had another brainstorming session: what if we got schools to do it, then we got the entire class to do it, hence increasing social pressure? It is possible that if everyone participated, the entire class would receive a pizza party.

It was the beginning of a new generation of pizza marketing.

The boom of Book It! and how it changed the world

Within 11 months of the program’s introduction, it had been implemented in 233,080 schools across the country, serving more than 7 million students. The Los Angeles Times complimented its simplicity and efficiency when it first published an article on it in 1985, shortly after its introduction. The program brought together private donations from the Reagan period with a drive to boost literacy.Gates and his colleagues received a personal letter from President Ronald Reagan congratulating them on the success of Book It!″I give you my salute,″ he said.Bud informed me that a lady called Phyllis was put in charge of the program, and she drew on her extensive experience as a librarian and working with schools to make important decisions.

For example, one of the creative ways she pioneered was the ability for children to be awarded for either minutes spent reading or for each book read, so avoiding penalizing slower readers or those learning English as a second language.Book It!had an influence on public policy in the United States, although in an unexpected way.National Young Readers Day was founded in 1989 with the cooperation of Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. It is observed on the second Saturday in October. In addition, Book It!

was not restricted to analog entertainment; in 1997, the project declared its presence on the Information Superhighway (the Internet). In addition, the initiative has partnered with the United States Department of Education to promote summer reading in order to prevent kids from becoming sedentary over the summer months. When Hurricanes Rita and Katrina devastated the United States in 2005, more than 250,000 books were donated to hurricane victims as part of a program run by the American Library Association.

Its legacy — and a call for resurrection

  • Since its start more than thirty years ago, Book It! claims to have reached more than 14 million kids in 37,000 K-6 grade schools since its launch. The program has also been investigated by researchers, who discovered that it is efficient in providing extrinsic motivation (in the form of pizza) to children to read. There are more than 100 celebrities who have agreed to read the Book It’s America’s Biggest Bedtime Story, including John Lithgow, Justin Bieber, and Tim Tebow. As an added touch of millennial nostalgia, Urban Outfitters has applied for permission to utilize the original Book It! logo on their merchandise. Having a conversation with Bud Gates and remembering my childhood passion for Book It! made me appreciate where my regular book reading habits originated from, but it also made me regret that so many of us still don’t read nearly as many books as we would want. In an effort to replicate the Book It! Culture for adults, I’d like to challenge you to a competition. Send me an Instagram photo of yourself holding the most recent book you’ve finished and tag me @nickgraynews. I’ll make a $50 donation to the New York Public Library for each of the first 20 tags that are submitted. Do these kinds of challenges have any effect? I’m not sure what to say, but it can’t hurt to try. Here are some book-related resources that I think you’ll find useful as you begin your Book It! 2.0 adventure. And if you happen to run into a person named Bud while you’re in Wichita, make sure to express your gratitude to him. The New York Public Library, IndieBound, Bill Gates’ Reading List, Goodreads, and all of my previous blog entries on books are all excellent resources.

What Does ″Book It″ Mean?

As a verb, the term book may signify a variety of things, one of which is ″to record or register″ something, such as placing a bet on the books in an official capacity. This sensation may be traced back to at least the 1200s.Book’s meaning extended to include ″reserving″ anything more widely throughout the 1700–1800 period, such as a table at a restaurant, as in, I booked a table for 7:00 pm.The term ″running away swiftly″ was coined in the 1930s and is still in use today.Bookity-book is a black slang phrase that means to replicate all of the sounds that comes with scampering away.By the 1950s, bookity-book had evidently been abbreviated to book and had acquired the meaning ″to move fast″ in slang among young people.

It has been argued that this notion was influenced by the slang term ″boogie,″ which means ″move.″ A particular term book it arose in the 1960s meaning ″fleeing a situation,″ generally on foot and to avoid getting into trouble, with the it occasionally eliminated, as in We gotta book.Book has been used to indicate ″study vigorously″ from at least the 1700s, similar to the expression ″hit the books.″ Another slang definition of book is one that refers to betting books, which are places where sports bets and other wagers are recorded.Book it has the connotation of ″bet on it″ or ″you may bet on it″ in this context (write it down in the betting book). In addition to literal bets, the word can apply to promises and forecasts that are more symbolic in nature. The use of the word book as a verb to mean ″to record a bet in a book″ goes back to the 1800s.

What is the oldest known piece of literature?

The first forms of written literature, like the wheel, towns, and legal codes, appear to have originated in ancient Mesopotamia, as does the wheel itself. The Sumerian civilisation initially invented writing approximately 3400 B.C., when they began drawing marks on clay tablets in a system known as cuneiform, which was later adopted by other civilizations.Sumerian scribes were known for copying down commercial and administrative papers, but by the third millennium B.C., they were also copying down essays, hymns, poetry, and stories.″Kesh Temple Hymn″ and the ″Instructions of Shuruppak,″ two of their earliest known literary works, both of which survive in recorded form and date back to circa 2500 B.C., are two of their earliest known literary works. It is believed that the former is an ancient ode to the Kesh temple and the deities that resided there, while the latter is a piece of ″wisdom literature″ in the form of sagely instruction allegedly passed down from the Sumerian monarch Shuruppak to his son, Ziusudra. The child is cautioned in one of Shuruppak’s proverbs not to ″pass judgment while you drink beer,″ as the saying goes.

A third advises that ″a loving heart helps to keep a family together; a cruel heart helps to ruin a family.″ While Shuruppak’s fatherly wisdom is one of history’s oldest known examples of recorded literature, the ″Epic of Gilgamesh,″ a mythological epic that originally existed as early as the third millennium B.C., is the world’s oldest known fictional narrative. The action-packed story revolves on a Sumerian ruler named Gilgamesh, who is regarded as being one-third man and two-thirds god, according to the legend.A classic hero’s journey unfolds for him over the span of twelve clay tablets’ worth of text, during which he battles monsters, mingle with demigods, and hunt for the key to immortality, all of which ends in predictable tragedy. The Epic of Gilgamesh originated as a collection of Sumerian poetry and tales going back to 2100 B.C., but the most comprehensive version was composed by the Babylonians during the 12th century B.C.After 600 B.C., the narrative was lost to history, and it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that archaeologists discovered a duplicate of it near the Iraqi city of Mosul that they realized what had happened.Since then, historians have lauded the 4,000-year-old epic as a seminal piece in the history of literature across the world.
