    Place the roll on the sushi mat and gently roll the mat around the roll, giving it a strong but gentle push to seal it. You want to condense the roll while keeping it spherical, but you don’t want it to be squashed.

    As soon as you have finished assembling all of your rolls, check that your knife is sharp and run the edge of the knife under running water. To split the roll into 8 pieces, cut each half of the roll in half again and again until you have 8 pieces. Continue to run the knife under a little stream of water between cuts to prevent the rice from adhering to the blade.

    How to make sushi with rice on the outside

    Uramaki sushi, often known as the California roll, is sushi that has rice on the exterior. Similar to a maki roll, except that the rice is on the outside and the seaweed wraps around the contents instead of the other way around.

    • 2 tablespoons golden caster sugar
    • 300 grams sushi rice
    • 100 milliliters rice wine vinegar

    For the Japanese mayonnaise

    • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
    • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
    • 1 tsp soy sauce

    For the sushi

    • 25g nori (seaweed) sheets in a bag
    • Choose from the following fillings: cucumber strips, smoked salmon, white crabmeat, canned tuna, red pepper, avocado, and spring onion
    • or combine them all.

    To serve with all styles of sushi

    • wasabi (optional – and fiery!)
    • pickled ginger
    • soy sauce


    • STEP 1: KIDS, the writing in bold is intended for you to read. ADULTS, the remainder is reserved for you. TO MAKE SUSHI ROLLS, FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS: Make a bed of rice by patting it out. Place a nori sheet on the mat with the glossy side facing up. Make sure to soak your hands in the vinegared water before patting handfuls of rice onto the surface in a 1cm thick layer, leaving the farthest edge from you unadorned.
    • STEP 2Apply a thin layer of Japanese mayonnaise on top. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise along the centre of the rice with the help of a spoon.
    • STEP 3: Pour in the filling. Allow your youngster to top the mayonnaise with a line of their favorite fillings – we’ve used tuna and cucumber in this example
    • STEP 4: Fold it in half and roll it up. Using a small amount of pressure, lift the edge of the mat over the rice to maintain everything in a tight roll.
    • STEP 5Apply pressure to the sides of the paper like a stamp. In order to avoid reaching the edge without rice, brush with a little water and continue to roll into a tight roll
    • STEP 6Wrap the entire thing with cling film. Before a grown-up cuts the sushi into thick slices, remove the mat and securely wrap the sushi in cling film. Then, carefully remove the cling film.
    • PREPAREING THE PRESSED SUSHI IN STEP 7: Spread some smoked salmon on top of the rice. STEP 8Line the interior of a loaf tin with cling film, then put a thin layer of smoked salmon on top of the cling film
    • then cover with rice and press down to adhere. If you have another tin, use it to push down the rice to approximately 3cm thickness over the fish
    • fold the cling film over the fish and press down as much as you can.
    • STEP 9Build it out like a sandcastle with your hands. Using a cutting board, transfer the sushi block. Get a responsible adult to cut into your fingers and then peel away the cling film
    • STEP 10: PREPAREING THE SUSHI BALLS: Make your selection of toppings. Take a tiny square of cling paper and add a topping on it, such as half a shrimp or a small piece of smoked salmon. Repeat with the other ingredients. To roll the rice into walnut-sized balls, dampen your hands and arrange them on top of the topping.
    • STEP 11 Roll the dough into compact balls. To assemble, bring together the corners of the cling film and twist them together to form balls, then unwrap and serve

    • Here are two essential abilities that will come in handy for a variety of different dishes.

    Sushi Terminology

    The five main types of sushi:


    • These are the rolls that you’re most likely most familiar with: rice and filling wrapped in seaweed.
    • There are several varieties of maki, each distinguished by the number of ingredients included within the roll or the size of the roll, such as hosomaki (one-ingredient maki) and futomaki (large-roll maki) (thick maki).
    • Raw fish, cooked shellfish, avocado, cucumber, and roe are among of the most popular fillings (fish eggs).
    • Traditionally, it is eaten with the hands, although most people in the United States eat it with chopsticks.
    • When dining at a restaurant, any manner is acceptable.


    • Petite mounds of rice are topped with a dab of wasabi and a variety of other toppings (usually raw fish).
    • ″Nigiri″ is a Japanese word that means ″grip,″ and it refers to the way the rice mounds are measured and molded by hand.
    • Two pieces are served in this classic form, which is the most popular among diners.
    • Chopsticks are often used to devour it in a single mouthful.
    • If you wish to dip it in soy sauce first, avoid dipping the rice first and instead dip the fish side of the fish.


    Raw fish that has been thinly cut. Sashimi isn’t exactly sushi because it isn’t prepared with seasoned rice, but it is almost always available on the menu at sushi establishments. The fish is sushi-grade, which means it is of a high enough quality to be consumed uncooked. The sashimi should be eaten with chopsticks in one bite, as opposed to a fork.


    Rice and contents are wrapped with seaweed, but the roll is in the shape of a cone. Temaki, also known as hand rolls, are sushi rolls that do not require the use of chopsticks to be consumed.


    It’s similar to maki, except the rice is placed on the outside of the seaweed rather than within. This method is common in America because the seaweed is ″hidden″ behind the rice, which gives it a more natural appearance. It is frequently topped with sesame seeds or salmon roe to add crunch.

    Other Terms to Know:


    Green tea is a beverage that is consumed in large quantities. As a palate cleanser, this hot beverage is ideal for mixing with sushi, yet historically it has been drank after a meal since it is beneficial to digestion.

    Ginger that has been pickled. It’s not meant to be eaten alongside sushi, but rather as a palette cleanser in between different varieties of fish to keep things fresh.

    Seaweed sheets that have been dried and used to roll or hold sushi ingredients. It enhances the overall flavor of the sushi by adding salty and natural umami. Chidui emphasizes the importance of using high-quality nori to create sushi that much more delectable.


    Fermented rice is used to make this alcoholic beverage. It’s often served warm, but it may also be consumed cold if you like. Traditionally, sake is only consumed before a meal and not with rice; nevertheless, a growing number of sushi enthusiasts are pairing the two. Sake is a Japanese term that also means salmon (though sake and salmon are pronounced differently in Japanese).


    Soy sauce is a condiment. Tip on etiquette: Never fill your soy sauce dish to the brim, as this is considered disrespectful to the cook. Pour only a small amount of the sauce onto the meal and use it sparingly. It’s also a good idea to always dip your sushi fish-side down since the rice may absorb a lot of salt in a short amount of time, making the sushi overly salty.

    • A Japanese cuisine consisting of battered and deep-fried fish, pork, or vegetables is known as yakitori.

    How To Make Sushi For Beginners [2020 Updated]

    Having previously shared a lesson on how to make sushi rice in a rice cooker, I will now explain how to make sushi rice in a pot. In addition, I will demonstrate how to build a sushi roll in this demonstration.

    How to Cook Sushi Rice in a Pot

    • You will need a short grain sushi rice; if you are unable to get sushi rice in your area, Amazon offers a great selection, the finest of which is Nishiki Premium Sushi Rice.
    • Not the cheapest, but also not the most costly, option available.
    • Rice vinegar, sugar, and salt are the main ingredients.
    • You will spend more time washing the cheaper rice since it has not been washed, but the more costly rice has been washed more and you will spend less time washing it.
    • However, I believe that having to wash it a second time is not worth the effort.
    • Pour two cups of rice into the pot that you will be cooking in.
    • Now wash the rice well to remove all of the starch.
