The Pizza Price Index: Which U.S. States Have The Most Expensive Pies?

A USDA study estimated that from 2007 to 2010, one in eight Americans ate some form of pizza on any given day. That number climbs to about one in four for males and one in five for females when looking specifically at Americans ages 12 to 19.There’s no escaping it: Pizza is ingrained in our diets. It’s also a pillar of our culture.Through TV, movies and now the internet, it has entered the zeitgeist. How do you make characters as strange as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles more relatable?

Make them love pizza.Right now, you can search on Amazon to find pizza sweatshirts, pizza pool toys and pizza cologne.Even new disruptive and trendy technological innovations need their connection to pizza. That’s why there’s a pizza cryptocurrency and drone pizza delivery. We noticed that pizza prices and availability can vary dramatically across the United States, so we analyzed data from Priceonomics customer Datafiniti, which has digitized menus across America.

Which states and cities have the most pizzerias? How much can you expect to pay for pizza across the country?Starting with this business data, we searched for restaurants serving pizza.

This data set gave us thousands of listings to comb through for more detailed location and menu information. To control for differences in price because of toppings and sizes, we needed a standardized item for evaluation, so we found the price of a large plain pizza in each restaurant record. This baseline allowed us to compare prices across cities and states more accurately. So where can you find the most places serving pizza?Accounting for population, the highest concentration is in the Northeast, particularly Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Jersey. At the city level, the trend is not as clear, with Orlando, Buffalo and Minneapolis taking the top three spots.

    • How much will you pay for a large cheese pie?
    • Median prices range from $7.25 to as much as $15.
    • Even though we looked only at plain cheese pizza, there are subtle stylistic differences that likely lead to price variation.
    • The neighborhood family-friendly pizza place and the typical franchise have much lower prices than artisanal wood-fire pizzerias.

Other regional differences, like Chicago deep dish, can lead to higher prices as well. The cities with the most expensive cheese pizzas in America?Buffalo, Nashville and San Francisco lead the way.Despite those geographical differences, there is one universal truth: No matter where you are, you’ll be able to find pizza. To start our investigation, we will want to see how pizza places are distributed across the country.

To account for differences in population, our metric of interest will not be absolute number of restaurants but instead number of restaurants per 100K residents.Controlling for populations makes sure that states like California do not dominate the top of our charts. The state with the most restaurants serving pizza is Connecticut, with 13.2 restaurants per capita.Smaller northeastern states with large Italian populations dominate the list, including Massachusetts (11.7), Rhode Island (11.6) and New Jersey (9.6).

    1. New York and Illinois, two states known for distinct styles of pizza, are in the second tier of states, along with Florida and areas of the West and the upper Midwest.
    2. States in the Deep South have the fewest number of pizza places per capita.
    3. We might expect this result as these states don’t have distinctive pizza styles.

Hawaii, despite having a namesake pizza (with pineapple and ham), is also in this group. So what is the cost of the average large plain cheese pie in these states?North Dakota and Wyoming have the highest median prices.

While there is no distinct regional trend, there are some possible explanations for what we see. These states have fewer pizzerias, which tend to be more upscale, artisanal sit-down restaurants — so in the cases you can find pizza, it’s more likely to be a more expensive variety.Maine and Alaska have the cheapest pizza options.

    • While that’s not exactly the attribute you want your pizza to be known for, it is a great thing for pizza lovers in these states.
    • Now we will go one level deeper and take a look at America’s cities: Where can we find the most pizza restaurants per capita?
    • When working with this data, we limited our comparison to the 50 cities with the greatest absolute number of pizza places.
    • Orlando sits at the top of our list, with 21.6 restaurants per 100,000 residents.
    • While Orlando is not known for its pizza tradition, a few things could be causing the abundance.
    • Florida in general, and Orlando especially, is known for tourism.
    • Pizza is guaranteed to interest tourists no matter where they’re from, and it’s a great option for families when traveling.
    • Fort Lauderdale likely has a similar story.
    • No.
    • 2 is a city in New York but isn’t NYC; it’s Buffalo (20.2).

This mid-sized city has a sizable Italian community and its own style of pizza: a medium-thick-crust round pie that is somewhere between New York City’s and Chicago’s pizza styles. Our third-place city, Minneapolis (21.1), may at first seem like the odd man out, but the Midwest also has its own distinct pie, with a square shape and medium-thick crust similar to the traditional Neapolitan pie that families would bake at home. You’re likely to see this shape of pizza across the Rust Belt, as far east as Detroit. Now that we know where to find pizza, we should learn more about prices.Again, we will look at the median price of a large plain pizza to compare our cities. The city with the highest median price is Buffalo, at $14.79 for a large plain pie.

In general, large metropolitan areas or mid-sized eastern cities represent the most expensive cities for pizza.Their prices are likely just a product of the higher cost of living. At $5.99, Lexington, Kentucky, has the least expensive median price.

Overall, these lower-priced cities are smaller and more often in the center of the country. Two of the cities with the most pizzerias, Orlando and Minneapolis, are also on our list for least expensive plain pies. That’s great news if you are a pizza lover in either of these cities. While we would need much more data to verify this idea, it could be possible that the high number of restaurants leads to greater competition and therefore better prices for customers.

The Hot-N-Ready pizza will cost more than $5 for the first time in 25 years.

It was only a matter of time.Little Caesars announced Wednesday that its famous Hot-N-Ready pizza will cost more than $5 for the first time in about 25 years.

    • The pizza — which was first introduced in 1997 — will increase by 11% to $5.55.
    • However, the new Hot-N-Ready pizza will come with 33% more pepperoni slices, according to Forbes.
Little Caesars CEO Dave Scrivano said the decision to raise the price came because of labor and supply shortages, according to the New York Post.

    • “Our franchisees were highly accepting of this proposition. They want to treat their customers like gold and make sure they get the best product possible and they love the idea of more pepperoni,” he told Forbes. “We think we’ve got something good here with delivery and our Pizza Portal and our Hot-N-Ready pizza. We’ve got a good structure to really drive overall growth.”
This decision feels eerily similar to what happened with the Dollar Tree. In November, Dollar Tree — known for selling everything for $1 — raised the prices of most of its items from $1 to $1.25, per the Deseret News.

    • “For 35 years, Dollar Tree has managed through inflationary periods to maintain the everything-for-one-dollar philosophy that distinguished Dollar Tree and made it one of the most successful retail concepts for three decades,” said the company in a statement.
Both of these price jumps could be tied to inflation, which has been hitting the country in recent months. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powellsaid in November that inflation may last into 2022.

    • “Our baseline expectation is that supply bottlenecks and shortages will persist well into next year and elevated inflation as well,” Powell said, per Fox Business. “And that, as the pandemic subsides, supply chain bottlenecks will abate and job growth will move back up. And as that happens, inflation will decline from today’s elevated levels.”

How Many Pizzas Should I Order? (Calculator + Size Recs)

Wondering how much pizza to order? We built this nifty little pizza calculator so you can figure out exactly how much pizza is enough to satisfy you and your group. Whether you’re trying to decide how much pizza to order for an office pizza party, kid’s birthday, group of friends or just your very hungry self, we’ve got you covered.

    Use Our Pizza Calculator

Use this calculator to help you determine exactly how much pizza to order. Answer just three easy questions and we’ll get you a quick answer on how many large pizzas to get for your group. How many adults are joining this pizza party? How many kids? How hungry are you? Boom. We did the math, now you do the ordering.

    Slice to Pizza Size Ratio

Pizza size is a huge variable when deciding how many pizzas to order, so let’s break it down. Here are the average sizes of pizza from a standard pizza restaurant, ranging from a small pie to an extra-large pizza, including the number of slices that come in each size.

    • Small Pizza: 8-10 inch pizza with 6 slices.
    • Medium Pizza: 12-14 inch pizza with 8 slices.
    • Large Pizza: 14-16 inch pizza with 8 slices.
    • Extra-large Pizza: 16-18 inch pizza with 8-10 slices.
Contrary to popular belief, the average pizza usually comes with 8 slices no matter what the size. The exception is the small pizza, which typically contains 6 slices due to its size. Here are some examples to give you an idea of how the sizes vary across pizzerias, according to interviews with pizza experts in Pizza Today.

    • Joe’s Pizza in New York City does a large plain cheese at 21 inches with 8 slices each.
    • A large pizza at Metro Pizza in Las Vegas is currently 18 inches, cut into 6 or 8 slices based on location.
    • Of the 50+ pizza restaurants on Scott’s Pizza Tours in NYC, the standard pie across the board is 18 to 20 inches and cut into 8 slices.

Remember, pizza size will vary from restaurant to restaurant so be sure to confirm over the phone when you place your order.Pizza shops are happy to take special requests when it comes to cutting, so if a large cheese pizza is typically 8 slices at your local pizza joint, they can easily cut the pizza into more slices to accommodate your group. This is the ultimate pro tip when you are ordering pizza for kids so that they can eat smaller slices with ease! You can also get the pizza uncut so you can do it yourself.Fun fact: Restaurants may also offer square cut pizza in many cases. In Northeastern PA, the standard pizza is a rectangle shape and it’s called a pizza tray, not a pizza pie!

It’s also sold in cuts rather than by the number of slices. There are 12 cuts to a whole tray, so a half tray would be 6 cuts.Check out our friends Arcuro’s in Old Forge to try this special take on a classic pizza!

Tips for Ordering Pizza For Both Small and Large Groups

If you’ve used our pizza calculator to see how much pizza to order for your group but are still stumped, read on to discover the variables we consider when ordering for ourselves.

    1. The number of adults vs children.

It’s important to know the number of guests you’re ordering pizza for, but what’s even more important is knowing WHO those people are. How many adults? How many children? Kids play a big factor when it comes to pizza ordering because they tend to eat less than your average adult.

    2. Appetite level.

How hungry are you, really? The average number of pizza slices an adult will eat is 3, but this number can vary greatly depending on the person’s appetite. It’s true that some people just want a slice and others can handle half a pie, so be mindful of your guests’ eating habits when ordering for the group. Hunger level is a sliding scale, folks!

    3. Preferences, allergies and diet requirements.

A hot topic for both large and small groups is pizza toppings.Whether you like pepperoni, supreme, veggie, black olives, green peppers, red onion, Italian sausage, Hawaiian, BBQ chicken, anchovies, white pie, specialty pizza or plain cheese, it’s good to note the group’s preferences so you can order enough of everything. In addition to the type of pizza, consider, too, if anyone in the group has dietary restrictions.Pizza providers do a great job of catering to allergies and offer gluten-free pizza, cauliflower crust and vegan and vegetarian options.Plus, there’s always apps to supplement your meal including Italian favorites like antipasto, eggplant parmesan or fresh mozzarella!

    4. Understand how many slices are included with each size.

Knowing how many slices of pizza are in a standard pie is great intel to have when deciding whether to get multiple pizza sizes. This mostly comes down to the number of people, but there are also so many different crust types, from crispy thin crust pizza to chicago-style deep-dish, which is helpful when deciding how much pizza is enough.Perhaps, after evaluating with our pizza calculator, you determine you need 3 pizzas but want to have a little extra for later. Our guideline is to always order a small cheese to have on-hand.Oftentimes, guests want another slice but don’t want to commit to a full one, so this is a great way to offer smaller bites to guests!Another hack is to ask for the pizza to be double cut.

A double cut pizza is cut into double the amount of slices, so if you’re ordering a large cheese you’ll now have 16 smaller slices instead of the standard 8.This is a perfect option for a group of kids or if you want appetizer-sized portions.

    Tipping for Large Pizza Orders

For large catering orders, it’s customary to tip at least 20%.There is a lot that goes into preparing your order behind the scenes. In addition to cooking the pizza and preparing it for carryout, the pizza place has to pack it properly to accommodate the group and make sure there’s napkins, spices, sauces and cutlery as requested. That’s all before it even goes out the door!Catering tips are often split with all employees including the driver and chef so be sure to take this into consideration when tipping on a large order.Add an extra 10-15% for inclement weather conditions like snow and rain as well as during busy hours and holidays like Super Bowl Sunday and NFL games.

For more on how much to tip pizza delivery drivers, check out our complete guide on tipping and use our pizza tip calculator.

    Conclusion

The purpose of this blog, since its inception ten years ago, is to find the exceptional pizza.″Destination pizza″ that is worth the trip because it stands out above the ordinary.Ten years ago, finding such pizza was often a challenge, but we were in the early stages of the ongoing Pizza Renaissance. Before the Pizza Renaissance, mass produced pizza was crowding out the best local shops and competing hard on price. The surviving mom and pop shops often had to cut corners on quality to compete with giants like Domino’s and Pizza Hut.They bought cheap ingredients from Sysco and it seemed like every storefront pizzeria was churning out a similar product.Soft, floppy, greasy, tasty, but nothing like the artisanal pizzas from an earlier time.In a way that parallels the craft beer movement, the new artisans came to the world of pizza.

Pizza geeks may argue where it began, but it was driven in large part by a return to Neapolitan pizza. At the head of that movement was Chris Bianco, who was celebrated as making not only the best pizza in Phoenix, but the best in America. While Neapolitan was and remains the biggest wave in the Pizza Renaissance, the renewed interest in pizza as more than cheap commodity fare opened up interest in other regional styles, like Roman, New Haven, and Detroit. One side effect of the artisanal pizza makers was the attempt to franchise and mass produce these great pies.It has succeeded far more than I might have thought, with places like Anthony’s Coal-Fired Pizza, Mod, and Blaze. One more and totally surprising side effect is that the behemoths have upped their game.

Not long ago, we tried and liked (almost loved!) the Detroit style pizza from Pizza Hut.

    8 slices for $8.99

All of this takes me full circle to Little Caesars.I haven’t had it for a long time, decades before this blog.I remember excitement when one opened in my neighborhood, and general disappointment at the crust, which seemed like Wonder Bread with some thin sauce and cheese on it.I don’t think I had it a second time. For all the intervening years, there was never a Little Caesars in my neighborhood and no chance to give it another try.I’ve been intrigued lately by Little Caesars ads, especially knowing that their ″DEEP!DEEP!″ square pie is essentially a Detroit style pizza.

Once I had tried and approved the Pizza Hut version, I decided that Little Caesars deserved a fresh evaluation, even though I still don’t live near a location. It was Covid19 that gave me the opportunity, because I needed to drive from my suburban location to a downtown Austin CVS for my vaccine.Nearby was the wonderful El Pollo Rico min-chain chicken restaurant, which was a no-brainer for my post-vaccination lunch.Across the street was Little Caesars, where I ordered the pizza for dinner later that day.I tempered my expectations because, well, it’s a big chain, and this is really cheap pizza.Naturally, I order the DEEP!DEEP!

pie with pepperoni, and it was $8.99.Just to compare prices (not quality), a similar sized Detroit pizza from Austin’s acclaimed Via 313 costs $22 and that’s a great price for such ethereal pie.I couldn’t resist ordering another pizza, especially because the very appealing Pretzel Crust pizza was just $6.00.Who doesn’t want a salty cornicione?

(The Pretzel Crust pizza can be found in a separate review here.) So, for a little over $16.00 including the tax, I was taking home two substantial pizzas.

    Little Caesar’s Pretzel Crust Pizza

I will jump ahead here to my reaction after eating a slice: this pizza was astonishing. No, nothing nearly as perfect as the Detroit pies at Via 313 or the magical version that Norma Knepp used to make at her rural PA farmer’s market stand. The crust was shockingly good.It sported a light golden crispy bottom, with evidence of some oil that helped crisp it.It was thick but relatively light, and not in a white-bread kind of way that has traditionally plagued mass-market chain pizzas. And it tasted like real pizza crust, too.The cheese was pretty ordinary, but it was applied generously enough except at the critical edges, where it needed more to get maximum caramelization over the sides.

The sauce was thick, rich, and more salty than sweet.Given the thickness of the crust and the generous amount of cheese, it would have been better with more sauce. It’s important to note that a more authentic Detroit pizza has two racing stripes of red sauce added after the bake; here the scant red sauce was mostly underneath the cheese.

    Underside of the crust

The pepperoni was big circles of thinly sliced standard grade stuff, but can you really expect spicy cup pepperoni on a $9 pizza? Four circles of pepperoni on each of the eight slices was enough, but it didn’t quite match the obscene pepperoni overload on the Pizza Hut version we tried not long ago.

For comparison, the Pizza Hut version

It’s almost embarrassing to confess how much I enjoyed both the Pizza Hut and the Little Caesars version of a Detroit pizza.Given a choice, would I prefer to spend $9 on the LC version, $12 for the Hut, or $22 for Via 313?Hands down, the Via 313 version wins despite its higher cost, and it’s not a close comparison. And as surprised as I was by how much I enjoyed this LC Detroiter, I’d recommend the extra $3 to get the Pizza Hut version over LC due to the more & better pepperoni and the generous post-bake application of deep red sauce.

    Good airy structure

This comes back around again to the point that the big chains are responding to the artisanal Pizza Renaissance by making better quality pizzas.I had been thinking that the future of chain pizza was in newer places like Mod and Blaze, and they have certainly carved out an important niche for fast casual Neapolitan. But after decades of peddling lousy soft floppy pizza that was little more than a bready vehicle for show-off toppings and stuffed crusts, the big chains seem to have found a way to make good imitations of Detroit pizza and still be a price leader.
