What Is Fathead Pizza?

Unlike traditional pizza dough, fathead pizza dough is created with mozzarella, cream cheese, eggs, and some form of low-carb flour. It is also gluten-free and keto friendly. There’s a good reason why fathead pizza crust is such a mainstay of the keto diet plan: it’s delicious! It’s quite simple to create, and the greatest thing is that the texture is extremely similar to that of real pizza!Using fathead pizza dough to make low-carb bagels and other baked products is another favorite of mine.

Keto Fathead Pizza Nutrition

Fathead pizza crust nutrition content is extremely low in carbohydrates, making it an excellent choice for keto diets.

How many carbs in fathead pizza?

  • The nutritional information changes a bit depending on which flour is used, but it is essentially the same for all three: Fathead pizza made with almond flour has 144 calories, 12 grams of fat, 3 grams of total carbohydrates, 2 grams of net carbs, and 8 grams of protein
  • Fathead pizza made with coconut flour has 117 calories, 8 grams of fat, 4 grams of total carbs, 2 grams of net carbs, and 7 grams of protein.

The nutrition information listed above is for one slice of crust (1/8 of a keto pizza), without any additional toppings, for both varieties.Toppings would be an additional cost, depending on what you choose to include. This keto pizza crust has a high calorie count, but you’ll be amazed at how satisfying it is considering how few ingredients it contains.Everyone agrees, and you’ll find that you’ll eat less as a result of your efforts.

Origins Of Fathead Pizza Dough

It is almond flour that is used in the original recipe for low-carb pizza from the Fathead movie. The classic mix of mozzarella and cream cheese, which results in a chewy texture when combined. After all, I figured it would make an excellent candidate for conversion into a nut-free keto pizza crust recipe.Fathead is a documentary that was released in 2009 that sought to disprove the lipid theory. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. In the lipid hypothesis, the relationship between high cholesterol and heart disease is asserted to exist.

It is, in essence, the root of the ″low fat″ dietary philosophy that has been advocated in the Western world since the 1950s.Despite the fact that multiple studies have disproved the relationship (for example, this is a decent scientific study on the issue that cites numerous sources), the concept is still common today and is supported by the media.Tom Naughton, the subject of the documentary, follows a somewhat low-carbohydrate fast food diet for 30 days.

  1. Tom, much to the amazement of many, not only loses weight, but he also ends up with decreased cholesterol levels in his blood.
  2. Because of the film, we now have an incredible keto Fathead pizza recipe to share with everyone!
  3. This nut-free Fathead pizza crust recipe, made with coconut flour, is my version of the original.
  4. The absorbency of coconut flour means that less of it is required to replace the almond flour in this recipe.
  5. For the coconut flour substitution, I used a third of a cup of coconut flour and an extra egg to give the cake more moisture.

Due to the fact that the cheeses are already salty enough, I did not include salt in the original recipe.

How To Make Fathead Pizza with Coconut Flour or Almond Flour

The procedure for making fathead pizza is relatively same regardless of whether you use almond flour or coconut flour to create it. There are three fundamental steps:

  1. Melt the cheeses together in a saucepan. Alternatively, you can use a microwave or a double boiler on the stovetop to melt the mozzarella and cream cheese together. Form the dough by combining the flour and egg. It is critical that the fathead pizza dough is consistent in appearance. A food processor is the most convenient option for me, but you may also knead it with your hands and squeeze it through your fingers to get the consistency you want.
  2. Cook the fathead pizza in the oven. Once you have the dough, you can either roll it out or mold it into a crust before baking it. To deal with sticky dough, see the advice below for how to deal with it properly
  • The Fathead pizza crust made with almond flour was included in the film’s original edition. You are more than welcome to make use of it! Here is the difference between almond flour and coconut flour in terms of ingredients: Recipe for fathead pizza made with almond flour: 3/4 cup almond flour, 1 1/2 cup mozzarella, 2 tbsp cream cheese, and 1 egg are combined.
  • Coconut flour is used in this fathead pizza recipe: 1/3 cup coconut flour, 1 1/2 cups mozzarella, 2 tablespoons cream cheese, and 2 eggs

The amount of wheat and eggs used differs between the two recipes.Alternatively, I’ve tried creating this keto pizza crust with flax seed meal, and it’s equally successful. It’s a fantastic alternative for folks who suffer from allergies! No matter which flour you use to make Fathead pizza, the taste will be fairly same. It’s true that some individuals are sensitive to the flavor of coconut flour, however I personally don’t notice any difference in this recipe. The cheese does an excellent job of masking it.

For the almond flour and flax seed meal, the procedure is very same.

Tricks to Making Keto Pizza Dough Perfectly

Kneading the Fathead Pizza Dough

The secret to getting the Fathead pizza dough to combine effectively in the third stage of the recipe is to knead it well with your hands. When dealing with coconut flour, the mixture dries and hardens rapidly, which is very noticeable.Simply continue to press and knead the dough with your hands until it is homogeneous in texture. To soften the cheese again, you can always reheat it a little more, but be careful not to overheat it in order to prevent frying the eggs.

Fathead Dough Using a Food Processor

Another way for making the Fathead pizza dough come together more quickly is to pulse it in a food processor until it is smooth.Install the dough blade, or even a simple S knife blade, and let it handle the rest of the job for you!You might have to scrape down the sides of the food processor a little to get the dough to come together properly.Additionally, if the cheese is resistant to mixing, placing it near the blade may be beneficial.

Dealing with Sticky Fathead Dough

The following three techniques can be used if everything else fails and the dough becomes too sticky to work with:

  1. It will help tremendously if you chill the dough in the refrigerator before working with it. A suitable amount of chill time is 20 to 30 minutes
  2. when working with the fathead dough, grease your hands thoroughly. This will aid in preventing your fingers from being stuck together.
  3. If the cheese hardens too soon, you may need to warm it for a few minutes to soften it before continuing to knead it.

Oven Time for Fathead Pizza Crust

This Fathead pizza crust will take a different amount of time in the oven depending on how thinly you roll (or spread) out the dough.I did notice that it cooks a little faster than the original recipe, though. It only took around eight minutes for mine since I like my low carb pizza crust extremely thin, but you may modify the thickness to your preference if you want it thicker.Simply keep an eye on it in the oven and poke additional holes in the top if it begins to bubble.

What Does Fathead Pizza Taste Like?

I’ve noticed that no matter whatever variety I make (and I make them all!), folks always seem to wonder if it’s simply an ordinary handmade pizza dough.Although there is a minor difference, the two are quite close. This Fathead pizza dish has a flavor that is quite similar to conventional pizza! In addition, the texture is perfect, which is one of the most difficult things to achieve when working with low-carb dough. If you want a convenient printable for all 3 variations of the Fathead pizza crust (almond, coconut and flax), you can sign up for my free newsletter and I’ll give it to you straight away.

The form is at the top of this page. There are no ties connected — pinky swear.

What Kind of Sauce To Use For Keto Pizza?

  • This is a frequently asked question concerning keto pizza dough that I get! I normally get natural, organic marinara sauce that does not have any additional sugar. When purchasing marinara, keep an eye out for sugary additives in the ingredients. Watch this space for my homemade keto pizza sauce recipe, which will be posted later this week. Alternatively, if you like anything other than simple marinara, here are some suggestions: Low-carb keto Alfredo sauce — I’m a big admirer of white pizza, and white sauce has less carbohydrates than tomato sauce
  • this sauce is also delicious on chicken.
  • Sweet and sour BBQ sauce – BBQ chicken pizza is very excellent! However, in order to make it keto-friendly, you must use a sugar-free barbecue sauce.
  • The macadamia nut pesto sauce transforms the fathead pizza into something more akin to a flatbread.

Topping Ideas For Fathead Pizza

  • Fathead pizza may be topped with nearly any type of topping you like! Because most pizza toppings consist mostly of meat and vegetables, they are inherently low in carbohydrates. For more inspiration, check out the whole keto food list. However, keep an eye out for fruits that are heavy in sugar, such as pineapple. Here are some popular fathead pizza toppings that are popular among the general public: Pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, and green peppers are some of the toppings you may have on your pizza.

Can You Make This Fathead Pizza Recipe Ahead?

The answer is yes, you may prepare this fathead pizza dish in advance. Here are some examples of how to go about it:

  1. Make the dough for the fathead pizza dough ahead of time. In order to save time, you should prepare the dough ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  2. Make the crust ahead of time. You may store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. Finish by adding the toppings and baking when you’re ready
  3. Make a fathead pizza crust or dough and freeze it. See the alternatives listed below for assistance.

Can Fathead Pizza Dough Be Frozen?

Yes, it is possible to freeze keto fathead pizza! There are two alternatives:

  1. Prepare the dough, roll it into a ball, cover it securely in plastic wrap, and place it in the freezer. When you’re ready to use it, defrost it entirely before rolling it out as needed. Before adding toppings and baking again, you’ll need to bake the crust.
  2. Bake the keto fathead pizza dough in advance. I like this technique since it is more convenient — no thawing is required! Bake the crust according to package directions, then wrap it and keep it in the freezer. In order to prepare the pizza, just layer sauce and toppings on top of the frozen crust and bake for approximately 20 minutes at 400 degrees, or until the dough is heated.
  • Food processor – Using a food processor to produce fathead dough is quite convenient! It saves time and effort by eliminating the need to knead by hand.
  • In the event that you do not wish to use the microwave to melt the cheeses, a double boiler can be used instead
  • Rolling pin – Although you can make your keto pizza crust with your hands, rolling it out will result in the most uniform cooking results. And if you want your food thin and crispy, this is a must-have.
  • Pizzeria pan — You can cook the dough on a standard pizza pan, but this one has a perforated surface that helps the crust crisp up while cooking the toppings. Place a piece of parchment paper over it to keep it from adhering
  • Pizza stone and pizza peel – A pizza stone gives the crust a crispier outside, while a pizza peel makes the crust more tender. Even if you’re making a fathead pizza recipe, you’ll want to place parchment paper on top to ensure that it doesn’t cling. The pizza peel makes it possible to set the crust on the stone and then remove it after it’s finished cooking.

  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese (cut into cubes)
  • 2 big eggs (beaten)
  • 1/3 cup Wholesome Yum Coconut Flour
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Cooking while using a kitchen timer is as simple as tapping on the timings listed in the instructions below.

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) (218 degrees C). Prepare a baking sheet or a pizza pan by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded mozzarella and the cubed cream cheese. Microwave on high for 90 seconds, stirring halfway during the cooking time. At the end, give it another good stir to make sure everything is properly combined. (**See the notes for an alternate method of using the microwave.)
  3. Combine the beaten eggs and coconut flour in a large mixing bowl. Knead the dough with your hands until it comes together. If the dough gets too stiff before it has been well combined, microwave it for 10-15 seconds to soften it.
  4. Apply a 1/4″ or 1/3″ thickness to the dough on the prepared baking pan using your hands or with a rolling pin over a piece of parchment paper to make a smooth surface (the rolling pin works better if you have one). Make several holes in the crust using a toothpick or fork to prevent the crust from bubbling.
  5. Bake for 6 minutes at 350°F. More holes should be poked in any areas where you notice bubbles developing. Bake for another 3-7 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  • 1 slice, or 1/8 of the entire pizza, is the serving size. Toppings are not included in the nutritional information. Check out the TIPS ABOVE for more information on working with fathead pizza dough.
  • In order to create keto pizza once you have the dough made, after you have cooked the crust, spread the sauce on top and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the toppings are heated through.
  • If you don’t want to use the microwave, you may melt the cheese and cream cheese together in a double boiler instead of in the microwave. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil, then arrange the cheeses in a metal bowl that rests over the sides of the pot. While swirling constantly, the goal is to melt the cheese without letting it burn
