  • In this article, I’ll teach you how to make the tastiest handmade pizza possible with only a single trip to Trader Joe’s.

  • This is my personal go-to recipe for handmade pizza, which I like making because the ingredients from Trader Joe’s are of such high quality.
  1. Using store-bought pizza dough might not seem as satisfying as preparing your own, but I’m here to show you that this is not the case.
  2. The pizza dough from Trader Joe’s is some of the greatest I’ve ever tasted!
  3. Making two wonderful 10′′ pizzas from a single Trader Joe’s Pizza Dough (which costs around $2) is our goal today.

Why not follow the Trader Joe’s package instructions?

  • The Trader Joe’s pizza dough comes with preparation instructions printed directly on the packaging, and while they are effective, they fall short of being ideal in many ways.
  • The following is what the package suggests: ″Set the dough aside for 20 minutes at room temperature.
  • Take the dough out of the bag.

  6. I also can’t complain about the extra protein it delivers, which is a nice bonus.

How to make your own Trader Joe’s pizza

Interested in making your own pizza from scratch with Trader Joe’s pizza dough? Let’s get this party started.

Step 1: Drizzle a little bit of olive oil into the bag of pizza dough.

Because Trader Joe’s pizza dough is quite sticky, putting a small amount of extra virgin olive oil into the back of the pan will make removing it much simpler.

Step 2: Add the pizza dough to an airtight container and cover.

  • Make a few turns with the pizza dough in the container to ensure that it is completely covered with the olive oil, then cover and set aside at room temperature for 4 hours.
  • If you don’t plan ahead and don’t have 4 hours to spare, that’s perfectly OK; just let the dough rest for an hour at room temperature.
  • The Trader Joe’s pizza dough recipe calls for allowing it to rise for 20 minutes, but I don’t think that’s nearly long enough time for my tastes.
  1. After covering the pizza dough with plastic wrap and allowing it to remain at room temperature for a few hours, the yeast will become extremely active and the dough will double in size.
  2. Take a look at the photos below to see the before and after.

Step 3: Split the dough into 2 equal-sized balls

  • I weigh out my pizza dough and then divide it in half to produce two absolutely equal-sized servings of the finished product.
  • Once the dough has been divided, softly knead each dough ball for around 30 seconds to smooth them out.
  • The dough balls don’t need to be kneaded much at this point; we just want to smooth them up a little bit before baking.
  1. Make use of a little additional flour to assist eradicate odors that are too strong.

Step 4: Wet a towel with warm water, then cover the pizza dough balls for 1 hour.

  6. When you use a pizza steel, you can cook your pizza on a surface that gets extremely hot, allowing it to cook in a short amount of time.
  1. If you don’t have access to a pizza oven, utilizing a steel pan is the next best thing.
  2. Before cooking the pizza, I prefer to preheat the oven to the highest temperature possible (usually 500 degrees F) and leave the pizza steel or pizza stone in the oven for an entire hour to enable it to get extremely hot before cooking the pizza.
  3. The higher the temperature of the surface, the better!

Step 5: Form your 10″ pizzas

  • A light, airy crust is my favorite kind of crust (it always feels like winning the jackpot when you get a beautiful large crust bubble), so we’ll take our time forming each pizza.
  • The first step is to sprinkle some semolina flour or cornmeal on your work area as well as on the tops of each dough ball.
  • Instead of rolling out the pizza dough with a rolling pin, start by pressing down in the middle of the pizza dough and working your way out towards the outside crust.
  1. This strategy aids in keeping all of the air contained within the outer crust, which is exactly what we want to happen.

  1. While this may not appear to be a substantial amount of cheese, it really melts down to the ideal amount: The total cooking time for this pizza should be approximately 5 minutes, depending on whether you are using a pizza oven or a standard oven.
  2. This will, of course, vary depending on the individual oven you are using and your preferences.
  3. Keep an eye on the pizza while it cooks, and rotate the pizza if you see that one side is cooking more quickly than the other during the cooking process.

  1. To make it easier to extract the pizza dough from the bag, pour a tiny quantity of olive oil into the bag (about 1 tablespoon, although I did not measure) and seal the bag.
  2. Place the Trader Joe’s pizza dough in an airtight container and flip it over a few times to evenly distribute the olive oil throughout the dough ball

  4. Cover with plastic wrap and let aside at room temperature for 4 hours. Please keep in mind that you are not have to let it lie for this long, but I highly recommend an hour at the very least (the 20 minutes stated on the box is not sufficient for me).
  5. Partially knead each ball of dough for approximately 30 seconds to smooth them out, then divide the dough into two equal-sized balls of dough. Cover the dough balls with a cloth dampened with warm water and set them for another hour.
  6. Meanwhile, prepare an oven-safe pizza stone or pizza steel to the highest heat setting while the dough is resting for the last hour of preparation (usually 500 degrees F). See the comments above this recipe card for a detailed explanation of why I advocate using a pizza stone and what alternatives you may use instead.
  7. After an hour, start forming your pizzas. In order to maintain air in the crust, press out towards the crust and then take up the pizza dough with your fingers hooked beneath the crust, allowing the weight of gravity to expand the dough. If you have enough dough, you should be able to construct 10″ pizzas from it.
  8. A pizza peel should be dusted with semolina flour (or cornmeal) before adding your pizza dough to it.
  9. Fill in the gaps with sauce, cheese, and whatever additional toppings you choose, being careful not to overload the pizza because it is a thin crust.
  10. Slide the pizza off the peel and onto the pizza stone, then bake until the crust is done to your satisfaction. However, keep an eye on the pizza and remove it from the oven when the toppings are cooked to your liking. Oven temperatures can vary significantly and therefore impact the cooking time.
  11. If you really want to take your pizza to the next level, drizzle it with some Trader Joe’s Spicy Honey Sauce before serving.

Notes

  • In this recipe, I used Trader Joe’s Pizza Dough, which has 560 calories per pizza if you make two pizzas from a single batch of dough, as I did. If you don’t let your pizza dough soak for 4 hours, the complete pizza will have over 1,100 calories in the crust alone
  • you are not required to let your pizza dough sit for 4 hours, but I find that this length of time works well for me. Although, at a certain point, more time does not necessarily equate to better results, allowing the pizza to rest and rise at room temperature will not hurt the finished product. Preferably one hour
  • If you have frozen pizza dough, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight the day before you want to make your pizza, then follow the rest of the directions for preparing your pizza in the same manner.

I’m not a gourmet chef, but I enjoy pizza, and I’ve prepared a slew of pizzas with Trader Joe’s pizza dough throughout the years. After a great deal of trial and error, I’ve gotten it down to a fine art. Using my ideas, you can create a delicious pizza at home, even if you can’t even boil an egg (like I can’t).

Which Dough and Sauce to Get

  • Pizza dough from Trader Joe’s comes in three varieties: regular, wheat, and garlic and herb (shown).
  • I’ve tried all of them several times, and the Garlic & Herb is the one I’d suggest the most.
  • More flavor is imparted to the dish, which is ideal for preparing a classic pizza with traditional pizza toppings.
  1. Pizza Sauce from Trader Joe’s (which is fat-free) is my favorite for the sauce portion of the recipe.

The Toppings

Of course, you’ll want to add some garnishes. This is where you may let your creativity and sense of taste run wild! My pizza toppings are very traditional: pepperoni, mushrooms, black olives, bell peppers, and onion are some of my favorites. To go along with it, I’m thinking you’ll also need mozzarella cheese and pizza sauce (both of which can be purchased at Trader Joe’s).

Don’t Forget the Flour for Handling the Dough

  • Don’t forget to pick up some white flour while you’re there, if you don’t already have some in your cupboards.
  • This is extremely necessary in order to handle the dough without it becoming a sticky sloppy mess.
  • I understand that buying a whole bag of flour and just using a small bit seems like a waste, but believe me when I say that it is a ″must.″ Keep the flour in the freezer to ensure that it lasts for a longer period of time.
  1. Aside from that, if you store it for an extended period of time, it may get infected with horrible microscopic bugs known as flour weevils (yes, that too has happened to me).

The Pizza Pan

  • The package recommends a circular pizza pan with a diameter of 12 inches, however I prefer to use a 14-inch pan for my pizzas.
  • As a result, the crust has a nice thickness and has more surface area for the toppings.
  • You could definitely go much bigger if you wanted.
  1. You do not, however, need to run out and get a spherical pizza pan.
  2. I started with a basic rectangular baking sheet and worked my way up from there.
  3. Except for the form of your pizza, there aren’t any significant drawbacks.
  4. Although a pizza stone is preferable, it is not required.
  5. The baking techniques and times will be different from those described here.
