How Much Should You Tip a Pizza Delivery Guy? Guide to Tipping

  1. Food delivery smartphone apps are becoming increasingly popular, resulting in a greater variety of options than ever before for having food delivered to your door.
  2. And, of course, there’s always the typical pizza delivery driver to contend with as well.
  3. But if you’re ordering in, you might be asking how much you should tip the pizza delivery person.
  4. While most individuals tip between 15 and 20 percent of the total, there is no defined rate for tipping, so the amount you tip is decided by a variety of circumstances in most cases.
  5. We’ll go through each of these criteria in detail so that you can be confident that you’re treating your delivery person fairly, no matter what time of day or scenario you’re in.

The Weather

  1. When calculating the gratuity, remember to take the weather into consideration.
  2. If you’re not willing to go since it’s a rainy day outdoors, make sure to leave a few extra dollars in the tip jar for your delivery driver to compensate for the inconvenience.
  3. When Mother Nature chooses to strike, food delivery drivers are the unsung heroes of the situation.
  4. These pros will go above and beyond to ensure that your purchase is delivered, even in the most adverse weather circumstances.
  5. You might express your gratitude to them for surviving the storm by giving them double the amount you would typically donate.
  • Your generosity will be remembered by the staff, who will do their best to assist you in the future.

Distance Travelled

One pizza may be literally right next door, while the other may be many kilometers away from the first. You will not compensate these two services on an equal basis. An experienced driver who spends more time on the road to deliver your pizza than a driver who simply takes a few minutes is deserving of a greater tip, especially given the fact that the majority of drivers now use their own vehicles.Perhaps you like a white pizza with broccoli from a restaurant that is a long distance away from home.

  1. You might have been placing orders with them for quite some time, and despite the fact that they are located thousands of miles away, your orders have always arrived on time.
  2. You have the option of giving the driver a tip that is somewhat greater than the regular amount of 20%, which is the higher end of the standard amount.
  3. After all, he is doing all of the hiking for you, which will save you valuable time in the long run.

Sporting Events and Holidays

It’s possible that it’s Super Bowl Sunday, and you can’t picture throwing a party without some enormous pizzas, cheesy garlic bread, and chicken wings.Totino’s Party Pizza is a personal favorite of mine. When you submit your order, you should be aware that the driver will be quite busy at that time.Providing that the meal is delivered on time (or even a few minutes late), it is OK to go the additional mile and express your appreciation for their efficiency by tipping 25 percent of the total for completing the task under difficult conditions.

When You Order Close to the Closing Time

Occasionally, you can find yourself placing an order for a pizza just as the restaurant is about to close its doors for the night. It is possible that your order is causing the delivery driver to be late even if the restaurant is still technically open.If your meal comes on time and the delivery guy manages to keep a grin on his face despite the hassle, consider tipping him a few dollars more to express your appreciation.

Driver Vs. Kitchen Circumstances

Remember that it is not your driver’s responsibility if your pizza does not have the proper toppings, if you do not receive your dressing on the side, or if your pie does not meet your gluten-free requirements. The common phrase says, ″Don’t shoot the messenger.″ This is true in this case.To avoid punishing the delivery person and tipping him/her less than you would normally do, follow these guidelines: To make a formal complaint about your improper order, you should follow up with the restaurant and explain why you believe you shouldn’t have to pay for the dish in question. The person responsible for delivering the pizza, on the other hand, can be held accountable if it is delivered to a neighbor’s house, is destroyed in the box, or is delivered later than expected.

  1. It is OK to reduce the tip (or perhaps delete it entirely if the driver makes a number of mistakes) in this situation since you should not be rewarding poor service.

Why Is It Good to Tip a Pizza Delivery Guy?

You might be wondering if you should provide a gratuity to the guy who delivers your pizza. After all, you paid for the order, and the driver is receiving a wage, correct. Delivery drivers, like restaurant waiters, rely on gratuities to make ends meet in order to stay afloat financially. Here are three compelling arguments for why you should tip your delivery guy.

1. How Much do They Make?

Pizza delivery drivers are tipped employees, and most businesses are aware of this, so they give them the bare minimum salary.I’ve came across a few of them that are only paid $8 per hour on the job.Another issue with these drivers is that they only work during lunch times, which means that they aren’t even earning full-time salaries in most cases. You can see how tipping may make a difference for the driver – and push him to deliver your food in a timely manner – by calculating the average tip for pizza delivery at 15%.

  1. Take into consideration that the driver is giving you the meal and you do not have to get in your car and travel to get it yourself, so consider your tip as a convenience charge.

2. Hidden Costs

Nowadays, the vast majority of delivery drivers drive their own vehicles. As a result, they are paying for petrol, auto insurance, and car payments out of their own pockets. Any gratuity that you provide to these drivers goes a long way toward alleviating some of their financial burdens.

3. Busiest Time

It is possible to have complete gridlock at special events, holidays, and even throughout the evening rush hour. You will be having a wonderful time with your family and friends if you order meals on a holiday (or even an unofficial holiday like Super Bowl Sunday), but the driver will be on the road working to serve you.It is appropriate to recognize and reward that dedication, and even to float your driver a few extra dollars on a vacation to demonstrate your appreciation for his efforts.

How Much to Tip Pizza Delivery when There is a Delivery Charge?

The majority of people are unsure whether or not it is OK to tip when you have already paid a delivery fee.In the majority of circumstances, the driver will only earn a little portion of the delivery fee.On top of that charge, it is traditional to tip the driver 15 percent to 20 percent if the service is outstanding to great, depending on the situation. If you want to be certain that the delivery charge is being paid to the driver before you account for your tip, you can inquire at the restaurant about how much is being paid to him.

Should You Tip Less if the Driver is Late?

To which the answer is yes, however the amount of less should be calculated using a sliding scale. To begin, confirm that the driver’s tardiness is the result of his or her own fault. If the driver is more than 10 to 15 minutes late, you should contact the restaurant so that they can give you an estimate of when you should expect to arrive.Although you may be blaming the driver, it is possible that the delay was caused by an issue in the kitchen.

  1. In other circumstances, the delay may be the consequence of an accident that has caused traffic to become backed up on the highway.
  2. There are some of these circumstances that are completely out of the hands of the pizza delivery driver’s control.
  3. If you are certain that the driver is to blame for the delay, you should not cut your gratuity.
  4. Obviously, if he is 30 minutes late and it is his fault, it is reasonable to reduce the tip to half.

Should You Reduce the Tip if the Pizza Order is Incorrect?

You must contact the restaurant immediately so that they can either send you the proper order or issue a refund. It is not the driver’s fault because he only delivers the food that has been packaged for him by a member of the restaurant staff. As a result, you cannot penalize the driver for something that is completely beyond of his control.

How Much Do You Need to Tip for Large Catering Orders?

If the catering order is considerable – for example, above $100 – you can tip 10% of the total amount received. This will provide him with a substantial chunk of coin and allow him to be adequately compensated for bringing you a greater order.

Why are Delivery Fees So Expensive?

The primary objective of delivery fees is to compensate for the expenditures and labor incurred in the course of providing the service. You’re also paying for the convenience of not having to leave your house in order to have a meal delivered to your front door, if you choose this option. Alternatively, if you want to save a few dollars, you may order takeout and pick up the meal yourself.

Can You Use Credit Card for Payment?

Payment by credit card will be acknowledged with a receipt, which you must sign before submitting the payment. The tip line on the receipt will be the same as the one you would see at a standard restaurant. After you’ve included the tip and calculated the amount, you may sign the receipt.Make it clear to the restaurant staff if you’re putting your order over the phone that you’ll be paying through credit card.

  1. The majority of the time, they will collect your information over the phone.
  2. The use of a card reader to swipe your card is possible in some instances, however this is not particularly popular.

Is there a Benefit of Placing Order Online?

The fact that you placed your order online makes no difference to the driver. If you make an online payment using your credit card, you will be provided a receipt to sign, which will include a tip line as well. If you are paying in cash, you will be allowed to tip in cash as well as credit card.

Using Apps like DOORDASH and UBEREATS

Tipping is the same across all of the delivery applications, regardless of the service. For standard tipping, you can leave 15 percent of the bill, with a minimum donation of $3. Consider leaving a 20 percent tip for exceptional service, and a 10 percent tip for substandard treatment.

If You Get Your Pizza from a Chain Restaurant

No. The same principles apply whether you purchase your pizza from a local restaurant or from a huge franchise.

A Few Things to Remember

  • To Tip or Not to Tip?

Unless there is an issue with the order, the driver is not at blame for the situation. As a result, you should refrain from venting your aggravation on the driver because someone at the restaurant made a mistake with your order.Continue to tip them in the manner in which you would ordinarily do it.The restaurant should be contacted if you do not wish to pay for the food since the order was erroneous.

  1. The business should be requested to refund the incorrect item off the bill because it was their error.
  2. Safety

Because of a severe traffic bottleneck on the highway, the driver may be late delivering your meal.Remember that you had the option of driving yourself and sitting in traffic, but you opted to avoid this by ordering in.As a result, if the motorist is stopped in traffic, do not penalize him or her for being late.If you do anything, try giving him even more to make up for the gas and time he wasted while serving you due to the traffic bottleneck.

  1. The Fee for Accurate Delivery

  1. The Delivery Fee for the Real Deal

This is a self-explanatory statement. Remember to express gratitude when you receive good service, since if you do not express gratitude, you may not be as fortunate the following time!

Conclusion

We don’t need to explain this topic. Make a point of showing gratitude when you receive good service, since if you don’t, you might not be as fortunate the next time.

Order Pizza? Here’s How Much You Should Tip The Delivery Driver

Almost everyone who has ever placed an order for a pizza or had food delivered has undoubtedly been confronted with the same question: ″How much should I tip?″ Though not in the same position as a restaurant waiter, delivery drivers are nonetheless in charge of delivering your order to the doorstep—and you wouldn’t believe some of the crazy situations that delivery drivers have been through before delivering your meal.Although gratuities are not required in the United States, they are appreciated as a token of appreciation for the individual’s services. If, for any reason, you do not intend to include a gratuity in the overall amount of your bill, you should at the very least request your pizza to be delivered to you.Nonetheless, let us return to the primary subject of this article, which is how much to tip your pizza delivery guy.

  1. In order to determine how much gratuity to offer, there are numerous considerations to bear in mind.

The truth about delivery fees

If you purchased a pizza from a restaurant and had it delivered, you may have noticed that the business charged you an additional delivery price. These fees can range in price from $3 to $10, but are often between $3 and $10. It may come as a surprise to you, though, because the vast majority of delivery costs go to the drivers. As a result, it should not be confused with a gratuity fee.

Minimum delivery fees

You may also have observed that in many establishments, in order for your meal to be delivered, you must order a certain amount of money in advance. This is referred to as a bare minimum delivery cost. That this is directed towards the delivery driver should not be misconstrued in any way. With a minimum delivery fee, the restaurant will take the money up front and is not legally required to set aside any money for the driver (with a few exceptions related to the federal minimum wage).

  1. With those two considerations in mind, you can begin calculating how much to tip your pizza delivery driver for your order.

How much to tip the pizza delivery driver

  • In general, delivery orders that are less than $20 in value are given a $3 minimum gratuity. If the order totals more than $20, it is normal to compute a gratuity equal to 10 percent to 15 percent of the total (but never less than $5) of the order. Several factors might impact the amount of money you decide to leave as a gratuity (but should always follow those baseline standards). The following are examples of situations in which a greater tip amount is appropriate: Deliveries that were made during inclement weather. Heavy rain, snow, and high winds, among other things, are all dangerous for individuals who are driving. If you’re ordering pizza to avoid driving in bad weather, a decent rule of thumb is to generously tip the person who brings it to you.
  • In cases where the delivery address is greater than five miles away from the store’s physical location.
  • If the driver was extremely courteous, provided exceptional service, or came earlier than expected

Bad delivery experience?

Is the order incorrect? Is it okay to eat cold food? Unfortunately, delivery problems happen on a regular basis. You should, at the absolute least, offer the delivery driver a tip, and then phone the business and ask to talk with a management about the situation, explaining your situation. The retailer, rather than the delivery driver, will be at blame in the vast majority of situations.

Why tipping delivery drivers is important

The majority of delivery drivers are paid the bare minimum wage or less, plus gratuities. However, when you throw in expenses such as petrol, insurance, and maintenance (resulting from the wear and tear placed on the car as a result of regular driving), these costs tend to quickly eat into any profits.Aside from that, there are several instances in which delivery drivers are forced to carry additional coverage and pay higher fees for their automobile insurance. To summarize, earning a livelihood as a pizza delivery driver can be difficult.

Here’s How Much You Should Tip Your Pizza Delivery Driver – The Sauce

It’s a chilly and wet Friday night in Chicago. It’s been a long and hard work week.Your sofa and a couple of Netflix episodes are beckoning you in from the cold.Because you’re too exhausted to even think about cooking, a couple of pizzas are on their way to you.

  1. It’s the ideal way to cap off a tough week.
  2. And then, before you get a chance to finish the first episode of what you believe to be a series-long binge, your pizza delivery guy arrives.
  3. She quickly brings you your two pizzas, which are still hot from the oven and ready to be gobbled by your humble narrator.
  4. You clench your teeth as your brain scrambles to figure out how much money you should offer her: When it comes to tipping delivery drivers, what precisely is the policy?
  5. Is a ten-percentage point appropriate?
  1. What do you think about 20 percent?
  2. In other words, is it customary for this sort of food service employee to anticipate more compensation?
  3. Feeling rushed by the urgency of the situation, you dig through your wallet and offer her a handful of notes, uncertain whether the sum is sufficient.
  4. Let’s face it: the act of tipping can be a difficult transaction to navigate, made much more difficult by the plethora of complex rules and disparate tipping standards that exist throughout the service sector.
  • However, in the United States, this is the system that we have.
  • Here are a few ideas and basic recommendations to follow in order to express your appreciation for your pizza delivery driver and make the procedure go as smoothly as possible for you.
  • First and foremost, here’s a tip: Consider your delivery driver in the same way that you would consider your waitress at a restaurant.
  • The responsibilities of a delivery driver are strikingly similar to those of a restaurant waiter in many aspects.

An employee working in food delivery, similar to a waiter, is responsible for bringing you your meal in a timely and pleasant manner. However, despite their efforts, they are frequently not tipped at a level that is comparable to that of a member of the waitstaff.Delivery drivers check to see that your order is correct, prepare it for a pleasant journey, carefully move it to their car, and then deliver it to your house. Moreover, they are frequently driving long distances, sometimes through dense traffic or inclement weather, to guarantee that you receive your meal in a timely manner.

  • It’s a profession that, in many ways, requires as much work — if not more — than being a waiter.
  • 2nd tip: The worse the weather, the more generously you should give your tip.
  • Assuming that there is a foot of snow on the ground and that the local television station has issued a blizzard-like precipitation warning, make certain that your tip represents the threatening weather.
  • Taking delivery routes in severe weather is a more time-consuming and difficult (not to mention dangerous) operation for delivery personnel.
  • And this isn’t simply a rule that applies to snow.

Whether it’s torrential rain, strong winds, or bone-chilling cold, if the weather is particularly terrible, you should consider increasing your tip by a few dollars to compensate for the inconvenience.(After all, there’s a good reason why you don’t want to go outside right now).Tip number three: The larger the order, the greater the tip.

Although this pointer appears to be self-explanatory, it is worth reiterating. It’s important to make sure that the quantity of your gratuity closely coincides with the amount of food being delivered if you’re ordering a dozen or more pies for a corporate lunch or party.Larger groups of people frequently tip a fixed price of roughly $10 to $20 — although that pay might be very modest if you’re buying 20 pies for your whole team of 100 people.

  • These orders frequently need a significant amount of strategic planning and labor in order to guarantee that all of the pizzerias are delivered hot, crisp, and on schedule.
  • Be mindful of the work required in these circumstances, and you’ll be OK.
  • Tip number four: You should provide at least $2 each pie as a gratuity.
  • Here are some particular statistics and numbers to assist you in determining how much to tip your delivery driver, last but not least: There is a broad understanding in the business that a gratuity of $2 to $3 every pie delivered should be given.
  • However, you should consider how large your tip is in relation to the whole amount.

At a bare minimum, you should tip 10% of the total amount of the bill. For standard service, a tip of 16 percent of the bill is appropriate, and a tip of 20 percent is appropriate for extraordinary service. The greater the distance between your home and the pizza, the greater the tip.

While there are instances in which these principles can be circumvented or twisted, if you follow these guidelines as a general guideline, you’ll ensure that you’re tipping your driver appropriately and fairly.Pizza delivery drivers transport you to a warm and delicious lunch on your schedule. So remember to tip them — and tip them lavishly — when you do.Melanie Lawder is the author of this piece.

When you’ve experienced outstanding service in a restaurant, café, or hotel and want to express your gratitude, you can do so by sending a gift.As a result, you left a modest sum of money for your server to collect as you were about to leave. This tiny sum of money is a tip, which is an additional sum of money separate from the bill that we provide as a means of showing our appreciation to the waitstaff. When it comes to some nations, tipping is expected – you would assume that a restaurant would be required to give its personnel a wage that they could survive on, but this is not the case – often the tips you offer make up the bulk of a server’s earnings.

  1. The most common types of tips that we give are to bartenders who pour our drinks, baristas who make our coffee, waitresses who take our orders and deliver our food to our tables, the hotel porter who transports our luggage to our room, and, of course, the pizza delivery boy who delivers our delicious meal.
  2. There are, however, a few more locations where we should provide hints.
  3. Salon and barber employees as well as tour guides and valet workers, shoeshiners, taxi drivers, professional movers and babysitters all provide a valuable service to the public, and they should be compensated for their efforts if they do a particularly good job.
  4. If somebody goes above and above to make you feel unique, consider tipping them.
  5. However, don’t assume that this list is exhaustive.

4 Myths About Tipping From A Former Pizza Delivery Guy

When we launched a simple poll regarding tipping delivery drivers, we had no idea it would generate such a massive response, with people on both sides of the tipping debate vehemently defending their respective positions. After reading Consumerist’s article about tipping, reader and former delivery person Justin wrote in to debunk a few ″myths″ about his previous job, which he believes are widely held. Here is Justin’s list of things to do: 1) The delivery charge is given to the driver to make up for the fact that he did not get any tips.As a result, any extra tip is completely optional FALSE.

  1. The delivery charge is same from chain to chain, however only a small portion of the revenue is distributed to the driver.
  2. Typically, the charge is collected by the business in order to cover driver expenditures, such as paying for a percentage of their petrol or other associated expenses that are specific to the delivery driver role (insurance, etc).
  3. Occasionally, the business will share the cost with the driver, and some smaller chains may choose to offer the driver the whole amount as an addition to his or her base wage.
  4. However, at the end of the day, the delivery cost is simply that: a price for delivering your order to your residence.
  5. It is NOT a gratuity, and it should never be interpreted as
