The remaining 90 percent of stores, on the other hand, are operated by franchisees.Domino’s franchisees have a certain amount of latitude when it comes to how much they pay their hourly workers, even if there are some parameters that must be met in order to be granted a franchise with the company. This implies that each location and nation where a Domino’s restaurant is located will have a unique set of promotions. The franchisees maintain the ability to determine their own compensation and to recruit and fire employees as they see fit.As a result, some workers are paid more, while others are paid less, but they are never paid less than the federally mandated minimum wage. This implies that the best course of action is to just visit your local Domino’s and inquire about how staff are compensated there.

However, these modifications continue to be implemented in the 400 locations that they control and operate. The unfortunate reality is that when it comes to franchisees, they have complete power over how much they pay their hourly employees, and the corporation cannot instruct them to boost these rates. However, given the fact that the activists have been campaigning for a salary hike for more than two years, it seems likely that they will be successful in their efforts.

There was not a single media request.Authors live their entire lives in anticipation of moments like this: ″I told you so.″ My work, on the other hand, received no recognition, prizes, or acclaim.Isn’t it true that being well ahead of the pack is supposed to bring with it honors and rewards?Consider what might have happened if, for example, a writer had foretold the September 11th attacks. In reality, one did, to a greater or lesser extent.

″I wrote Blowback in 1999, and it was released in 2000, with the intention of serving as a warning to the American public. In a 2004 interview, Chalmers Johnson, a regular contributor to the TomDispatch, remembered his smash book’s message: ″You should anticipate reprisal from the people who are on the receiving end of now uncountable clandestine actions.″ No one took notice of the warning….But it became a best-seller after September 11, 2001, when, all of a sudden, inattentive Americans were motivated to seek, at the very least on an emergency basis, some comprehension of what they were getting themselves into.″ Johnson had been a year ahead of the game and was congratulated on his accomplishment.

When I released The Case for Withdrawal from Afghanistan, it was a compilation of essays and articles that emphasized the futility of the Afghan struggle and the necessity of ending America’s participation in that country. This summer, the arguments advanced by other contributors (including Johnson) and myself were successful in securing the victory.According to President Joe Biden, ″Last night in Kabul, the United States brought the country’s 20-year war in Afghanistan to a close.″ The following is my word of assurance: I believe with all of my heart that this is the correct decision, a sensible decision, and the best option for America.″ It could have been the finest idea, but it wasn’t the first one to come to mind.

Despite this, Biden made no mention of my book.Or they only gave me a brief acknowledgement.Alternatively, he acknowledged that he was at least a decade behind the times.

Of course, I was aware of the circumstances. If I were in his position, I’d want to keep my mistakes to myself as well.So I sat back and waited for the cable news networks to pick up on it.As the war in Afghanistan came to an end, I couldn’t stop myself from checking my phone. In my mind, I could almost see how the interview would proceed.

″How does it feel to have been so foresighted and to have had the arguments in your book eventually win the day?″ says the author.Chris Wallace of Fox News would be the one to ask.″Well, Chris, it’s about time someone posed that question…″ says the author. My first response would be to say something that would, of course, serve as an advertising for my book and, after all these years, propel it to the very top of the bestseller list. However, the phone call from Fox News never arrived. As a result, when I went to check the bestseller list, I saw that my book had been replaced by some absurd book about ″the final eight months of the chase of Osama bin Laden″—cowritten by none other than Chris Wallace!—instead of mine.

  • Maybe someone from MSNBC will get in touch with you.
  • So I went through my phone messages, my e-mail, and my texts once again.
  • Nothing.
  • Instead, they chose retired Lieutenant General H.R.

McMaster, a former national security advisor to President Trump who was also one of the Americans who were defeated in the Afghanistan war.According to Media Matters for America, McMaster appeared on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News seven times between August 16th and August 26th, just beating out disgraced former general, CIA director, and Afghan War leader David Petraeus, who appeared on those networks six times during that period. At the very least, I was encouraged to see that several news organizations reached out to Andrew Bacevich, a regular contributor to TomDispatch and president of the Washington, D.C.-based Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. One of them even made reference to statements he made in Foreign Affairs five years ago that proved to be prophetic. But did any of them disclose that his work had previously featured in The Case for Withdrawal from Afghanistan, which had been published five years earlier?

Nope!Despite being let down by the mainstream media, I maintained a glimmer of optimism. My publisher, Verso, would undoubtedly get in touch with me.Eventually, the managing director would write, ″We did it!″ ″You made a compelling case for withdrawing your consent. For ten years, a multibillion-dollar organization argued against it, but they were defeated, just as they had been in Afghanistan itself!″ Unless he attempted to transmit the message through Western Union telegraph, it has not yet been received by the recipient.

Gotta Be Wrong to Be Right
  • When it comes to American conflicts, being correct has never been a smart idea.
  • At the very least, not from the beginning.
  • Chalmers Johnson was a dedicated Cold Warrior and CIA analyst who rose to prominence only after renunciating his hawkish views.
  • Bacevich, a Vietnam War veteran who was also a passionate Cold Warrior at one point in his life, experienced the same thing.
  • Even before his sharp and perceptive book Reign of Terror was widely praised—in two separate New York Times book reviews, no less!—Spencer Ackerman backed the Iraq War and was an unashamed supporter of General David Petraeus and his administration.
  • I’m still waiting for The Case for Withdrawal from Afghanistan to be reviewed even once by the New York Times.

It’s true that anthologies are difficult to market, but mine advanced the point more than a decade before Vice President Joe Biden made his case to the American public. This level of advance warning should be required by law, yet that does not appear to be the case in the United States of America. The explanation for this is rather simple.Americans adore a good redemption narrative, or a tale of atonement and redemption. Before you can do anything right, you have to be wrong a few times.

You have to sip the Kool-Aid at some point, even if it means standing in a sea of corpses a la Jonestown, or else people will never take you again again. That not everyone was taken in by the domino theory or swayed by a two-bit camouflage-clad huckster is something that this country despises being reminded of.To be honest, practically every American was incorrect about the war in Afghanistan, and that includes President Barack Obama.

The immediate aftermath of 9/11 revealed that 90 percent of Americans agreed of the United States bombing Afghanistan, with only 5 percent opposed and only a few actively attempting to avert the approaching war, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup survey. For example, at a September 2001 anti-war march in New York City, I recall a middle-aged man who was only a few feet away from my face and virtually foaming at the lips with rage.He had become so incensed by people who felt that bombing Afghanistan would be a mistake, that the war would fail, and that Afghans would suffer, that his face had become a hue halfway between crimson and plum.

It’s still fresh in my mind how spittle flew from his lips as he yelled, ″SCUM!″ I’m hoping that enraged man is now taking in Afghan refugees in his own house instead.I wouldn’t put money on it, on the other hand.My bet is that he has never apologized for his bellicosity and belligerence, for being incorrect about the war and all of the agony and death that has resulted as a result of it.

And, if that’s the case, he’s not alone. When the defeated American military hobbled out of Kabul in August, after murdering ten people in its final drone attack of the war, how many mea culpas did you hear? That conclusion was both appropriate and tragic at the same time. The overwhelming proof of the massacre of seven children and three adults compelled the United States military to issue a one-of-a-kind and extraordinary apologies for those deaths. But what about the rest of the United States?

When are the 90 percent of the population — and possibly even you, dear reader — going to accept responsibility for the disastrous war that they sponsored and call it quits? In 20 years of bloodshed, failure, and devastation, when are they going to apologize to the people of Afghanistan?

So Wrong for So Long
  • For those of you who haven’t figured it out yet, the agitated tone of this work is a rhetorical ploy…
  • sort of.
  • I never anticipated to receive a phone call from Chris Wallace, or to receive a text from MSNBC, or to have a mention from President Biden.
  • Although I never imagined that The New York Times Book Review would see the light, I’d be delighted if they awarded Ackerman’s Reign of Terror a third, fourth, or fifth good review, as they have done in the past.
  • I wasn’t joking when I said H.R.
  • McMaster and David Petraeus, however.

But the reality is that no news producer should ever book any of them, except for a program on how to lose a war, how to profit from one, or how to live with massive quantities of blood on one’s hands. However, that is scarcely a responsibility on their own shoulders.I, too, bear some of the blame for the lives that have been lost in Afghanistan without justification.I may not have been among the 90 percent of Americans who cried out for war in 2001, but I paid my taxes for the following 20 years, making me responsible for every Afghan civilian who is shot at a checkpoint or murdered by a drone during that time. Also to blame is the deluge of suffering that ensued as this country’s Global War on Terror spread across the Greater Middle East and Africa—for civilians who were executed by US-backed troops in Burkina Faso and Cameroon, killed by air strikes in Libya and Iraq, or wiped out by drones in Somalia and Yemen, to name a few examples.

All of this is to indicate that I am not deserving of champagne, congratulations, or special recognition, but rather, like the rest of America, I am deserving of humiliation, blame, and guilt.Even if it meant that the final copies of The Case for Withdrawal from Afghanistan were destroyed and the book was utterly forgotten, I would be delighted. However, I do have a tiny request in return: do you recall TomDispatch regular Jonathan Schell?

″The war in Afghanistan is not going well,″ he said in his ″Letter from Ground Zero: November 1, 2001″ published in the Nation twenty years ago, as the first phrase. What a prophet he was.He proved to be particularly insightful when he observed that ″military strategy in the United States is at conflict with its political policy″ even in the first stages of the Afghan War.

Moreover, in a war on terrorism — as opposed to a fight on a state — it is politics rather than military might that will almost certainly determine the outcome.″ Schell was well aware of this since he had watched American arrogance and stupidity in Vietnam more than four decades ago.As a result of the United States’ utter failure to win the political war in Vietnam, billions of dollars and decades of effort were expended on the ″military half″ of the conflict, resulting in the Potemkin state of South Vietnam only existing for about two years after US combat troops withdrew from the country. In that now-defunct ″Letter from Ground Zero,″ Schell drew attention to a contemporaneous essay by Washington Post writer Charles Krauthammer, who argued that the primary purpose of the United States in Afghanistan should be ″killing Al Qaeda and the Taliban.″ ″What happens after that will be an intriguing challenge to solve.″ The battle, on the other hand, comes after,″ observed one conservative commentator, who failed to comprehend the nature of the conflict.

It turned out that the United States nearly crushed the Taliban in a short period of time, but that the United States mishandled the potential win, resulting in a 20-year insurgency. This country was therefore so comprehensively outplayed on the political front that two decades of effort and billions of dollars in US tax funds were ultimately unable to support the Afghan government and its US-built army even after the United States withdrew its troops from the country altogether. However, in the end, it turned out to be less ″an fascinating topic″ and more the catastrophic climax to more than two decades of struggle. In November 2001, Schell had an all-too-clear view of the situation.According to him, ″the United States can surely defeat the Taliban in a land battle and take control of Afghanistan.″ ″However, just because politics has been disregarded does not mean it will disappear.

″The state that is now absent from Afghanistan will continue to be absent.″

Schell Game
  • Schell was not just correct in his assessment of Afghanistan.
  • He had been much ahead of the curve when it came to the US war in Vietnam and the risk of nuclear weapons earlier in his career, and he would later be far ahead of the curve when it came to the growing strength of people power throughout the world and the dangers of climate change later in his career.
  • While Reagan and Bush were passionate supporters of the United States, Krauthammer was a vocal opponent of the invasion of Iraq by that country.
  • His prognosis was that the war would last three weeks, and he was correct.
  • He praised David Petraeus as ″excellent,″ justified the use of torture while praising its effectiveness, and advocated for climate denial.
  • He was frequently criticized for being consistently inaccurate, as in this forecast made on Fox News Sunday on September 27, 2009: Chris Wallace: I’d want to thank you for your time.

″Perhaps the best estimate is that the president will end up handing McChrystal the soldiers he desires, or that he will alter the war strategy?″ ″I believe he does not, and McChrystal resigns,″ writes Charles Krauthammer. As you may recall, President Obama ordered the deployment of 30,000 extra soldiers to Afghanistan a few weeks later, and General Stanley McChrystal claimed that President Obama had ″given me with a clear military goal and the means to achieve our task.″ None of it was recorded or measured, so Schell continued to write for a left-leaning audience in the pages of The Nation, and Krauthammer continued to be a cable-news regular, with his syndicated column appearing in newspapers throughout the country.None of the authors, including Schell and Krauthammer, survived to see America’s humiliating loss in Afghanistan. However, just month, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made an uncommon acknowledgment that put an end to any debate over who made the proper decision in November 2001.The painful fact is that we did not completely appreciate the extent of corruption and weak leadership in the top ranks…that we did not anticipate the snowball effect generated by the agreements that Taliban commanders made with local authorities.″ ″We failed to properly co
