The Best Pizza Styles, Ranked

Looking at pizza with a critical eye has proven to be one of the most challenging things we’ve ever had to do.After all, pizza is just pizza.Pizza is always delicious, whether it is served hot from the oven or warmed after a couple of days in the refrigerator or freezer.

Essentially, it is the culinary equivalent of a bear hug: it feels nice, and we don’t want it to end.Despite our unwavering devotion to this cuisine, the reality is that certain dishes are superior than others. If you take a short look at the many different varieties of pizza available, you will see that we are a country of pizza enthusiasts.

  • However, it also implies that we must rank these pies in a wholly subjective manner, from worst to best in terms of pizza style, in order to properly evaluate them.
  • Despite the fact that we assigned this work to ourselves, you should be aware that this was a very, very difficult undertaking.
  • Sure, there are some pizza variants popular in this nation that aren’t all that fantastic – no matter how much we adore them – and as a result, they were simple to put low on the list of the best.

However, many of our country’s pizzas are deliciously tasty in their own distinct ways, and it was difficult to choose out one that was better than the next in this competition. However, we gave it our best effort. You should be aware right away that not every single pizza style available in the United States is featured here – there are simply too many to list.

  1. However, the ones that made it onto the list were considered and judged with a great deal of respect and affection.
  2. This is a list of the best pizza styles, listed in descending order from the worst to the absolute finest: Pizzas in the Style of Bagel (Also Known As Pizza Bagels) LizLemonCooks/Flickr Pizza is a favorite of ours.

Searching for the Best Pizza Chain

When I get home from a long week at work, there’s nothing better than snuggling up in front of the television with my favorite program and a slice of pizza.A fast and easy dish like one of these will do the trick if I’ve had a nice week.If I know I’m going to be pressed for time, I’ll go for one of our frozen alternatives that are a staff favorite.

I will admit that certain weeks are simply overwhelming and I want nothing more than a pizza that involves no more work than calling the latest pizza restaurant to place an order for delivery.Choosing between different pizza shops, on the other hand, is a challenging task for me.A couple of pizza businesses will deliver directly to my door, but I never know which one will bring a pizza that is truly outstanding on every level.

  • That indicates that a test was required!
  • So I enlisted the support of some of Taste of Home’s greatest pizza fans to assist me in selecting the finest pizza chain.
  • 2 out of 8

The Test and What We Were Looking For

  • Let’s face it: judging a pizza is a difficult task! You have to take into consideration the dough, the toppings, the time it took for the pizza to be delivered, and a slew of other factors. The exact identical order was placed at each location in order to ensure that the test was as fair as possible. The orders were a medium pepperoni pizza and a medium cheese pizza. In the end, I stuck with whatever the normal crust choice was and didn’t add any additions to it—no extra cheese, no more toppings, no other flavor mixes baked into the crust, nothing. The following pizza chains were included in this test (sorry, California Pizza Kitchen fans—try these recipes instead!): Domino’s, Jet, Little Caesar’s, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, and Papa John’s Pizza.

Among the judging criteria were a fulfilling pizza with a variety of tasty toppings and lots of them, which my testing team and I were on the lookout for during the process. We were looking for gooey, melty cheese, a crunchy crust, a delicious sauce, and a fair ratio between all of these ingredients. We were searching for a pizza that would make us want to come back for another slice and order another pie the following week, and this was the most critical factor for us.

Try this recipe to ensure that you get the ideal ‘za at home every time.3 out of 8 Lisa Kaminski of Taste of Home contributed to this article.

5. Jet’s

Because Jet’s offers such a large selection of pizzas on its menu, this was a difficult decision to make. You may choose from a variety of crusts, including thin crust, deep dish, hand-tossed, and New York-style crust—or you can try one of their specialty pizzas, the four (or eight) corner pizza. In addition, Jet’s offers a variety of specialized topping combinations.

Are you a pizza purist?Learn about the 23 things that the pizza delivery person will not tell you.Nonetheless, for the sake of this experiment, we chose the hand-tossed method for both our cheese and pepperoni pizzas.

  • There were lots of toppings on the pizza, which was a positive, but it appeared to be somewhat oily (yes, even by delivery pizza standards) and the dough was chewier than we would have liked.
  • Some members of the workforce were taken aback by this.
  • However, when I asked them what they normally purchased from Jet’s, they stated that their favorites were the four-corner pizzas and Jet’s Bread.

When eating at Jet’s, it appears as though you should consider going above and beyond the traditional pizza selections to sample their other offerings.A medium one-topping pizza costs $8.99 at locations around the country.4 out of 8 Lisa Kaminski of Taste of Home contributed to this article.

4. Papa John’s

Papa John’s was the most costly pizza we sampled, yet it didn’t wow any of our taste testers, despite being the most expensive. The tomato sauce had a hint of sweetness to it, but there was no spice or fire to balance it out in any way.The crust was also a little softer than we would have liked.

The real kicker was the cheese, which appeared to break into chunks rather of pulling apart in the gooey way we are accustomed to seeing it do.Having said that, we did love the pepperoni—and our tasters were virtually giddy after dipping their slice in the chain’s trademark garlic sauce, which we found to be delicious.Following that, don’t miss these 16 copycat pizza recipes that will make your house taste like a restaurant.

  • A medium one-topping pizza costs $12.49 at locations around the country.
  • 5 out of 8 Lisa Kaminski of Taste of Home contributed to this article.

3. Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut brought up many happy memories for the majority of testers (including me). What youngster of the 1990s didn’t like the personal pan pizza that arrived after completing a sufficient number of books as part of the BOOK IT!initiative?

So, with that in mind, we were delighted to go into the classic pan pizza from the company. When we first opened the box, we both agreed that it was a very gorgeous pizza. What about the taste, though?

  • With regards to the sauce and toppings, Pizza Hut outdid themselves.
  • There was a generous amount of pepperoni placed on top, which had a fantastic crunchy texture.
  • In addition, the cheese was rather amazing.

There were plenty of ooey-gooey moments because to the creaminess and meltiness of the dessert. The crust, on the other hand, left us with mixed sentiments. We expected a lot more dough from a pan pizza than we did with hand-tossed or cracker thin choices, but the crust itself was a little underwhelming.

  1. You can create your own pizza dough at home if you want to learn how.
  2. This dish tasted great, however it lacked crispness on the bottom and around the perimeter.
  3. Because this might be a one-time occurrence, we wouldn’t rule out Pizza Hut as a potential future partner.
  4. In addition, the breadsticks are a particular favorite of mine.
  • A medium one-topping pizza costs $11.18 at places all around the country.

2. Little Caesar’s

We weren’t expecting a pizza this amazing for only six dollars, but Little Caesar’s pleasantly surprised us with its quality. We tried the EXTRAMOSTBESTEST (yep, that’s what they call it) pepperoni and cheese pies from the chain and were completely smitten. It’s worth mentioning that the chain also provided pretzel crust as an alternative to the traditional crust.

Yum!We were all thrilled with the quantity of toppings that were included on each slice.″Wow!″ said one tester on her comment card after seeing the results.

  • ″Pepperoni, pepperoni, pepperoni!″ These pepperoni also had a slight crunch to the edges, which is a trademark of a well prepared sausage.
  • The sauce on this pizza was also a hit with us.
  • I really enjoyed the tomato flavor, and it had a nice bite to it.

As for the crust, Little Caesar’s got it right as well: it was crunchy on the surface and fluffy on the inside, providing a nice compromise for folks who can’t decide between pan pizza and thin crust. Are you perplexed about crust? Here’s our definitive guide to the many regional pizza styles.

  1. However, you can easily book a pick up through their Pizza Portal online if you choose not to wait for delivery.
  2. The only downside to this pizza is that Little Caesar’s does not provide delivery.
  3. However, at only six dollars, I’m prepared to travel a small distance for pizza this delicious.
  4. A medium one-topping pizza costs $6.00 at places all around the country.

1. Domino’s

Our favorite pizza in this test was Domino’s, which we enjoyed from beginning to end.Domino’s not only had the finest flavor, but it was also the most convenient to order from. You can also plan your delivery online ahead of time, which is a terrific way to ensure that you get your pizza right when the cravings strike.

On the drive to the workplace, we were able to keep track of the development of our pizza thanks to the Pizza Tracker. And, granted, other restaurants provide order tracking, but Domino’s provided the most extensive and straightforward instructions. However, the tracker was only the icing on the cake.

  • Everyone was gushing over this pizza, and it was no exception.
  • This pie managed to meet each and every one of our requirements.
  • Perfectly flavored and seasoning was used in the preparation of the sauce.

The cheese was really melty and creamy, which is precisely what we look for in an excellent mozzarella cheese. In particular, we were delighted with the amount of toppings that were crammed into our pepperoni pie. There was a slight crispness to the edges of the slices.

  1. The crust, on the other hand, was the true star of the show.
  2. It held up to all of the toppings and cheese, which was ideal for testers on the go (no need for a plate!).
  3. The crust, by far, was the most delicious component of the dish.
  4. In addition, the crust’s edge was coated with a herb combination, making it lovely and crispy around the edges.
  • Although it may not seem like much, this dusting of Italian spice was enough to propel Domino’s to the top of the leaderboard.
  • Yes, it was that wonderful in all honesty!
  • We received the impression that once we had consumed the most of our slices, we were entitled to a bonus breadstick.
  • This crust, in our opinion, is what really made this pizza a winner.

We also have a go-to pizza chain for our office pizza parties, which is great!Pizza Hut offers a medium one-topping pizza for $9.99 in stores all around the world.8 out of 8 Lisa Kaminski of Taste of Home contributed to this article.

The Bottom Line

In terms of chain pizza, I’m pleased to suggest Domino’s and Little Caesar’s without hesitation when it comes to the best available. Both were a great hit in pizza parties (there wasn’t a single piece of pizza left!).However, if you do happen to have leftover pizza, this is the single greatest method for rewarming it.

These pizzas received the greatest accolades because they fulfilled all of the criteria: a delicious sauce, a generous amount of toppings, gooey, creamy cheese, and a delightfully crisp dough. It also helps that both Domino’s and Little Caesar’s are almost omnipresent, which is a plus. There are more than 5,000 Little Caesar’s franchise locations across the world.

  • Domino’s, on the other hand, has over 16,000 locations globally.
  • Those numbers are astounding, but they reassure me that I can always get a nice pizza delivered quickly, no matter where I am.
  • All of that being said, if you’re in the mood for pizza, any kind of pizza will do.

So pick your favorite—even if it’s your neighborhood pizza joint—then kick back and enjoy a relaxing Friday night. As for me, I’ll be placing an order with Domino’s.This article was first published on April 02, 2019.

If you make a purchase after clicking on one of our links, we may receive a commission. Frozen pizza is one of those items that is really convenient to keep on hand in case of an emergency. It’s also perfect for dinners when more elaborate preparation isn’t feasible due to time constraints or other factors. A frozen pizza is simple to prepare, and some may even fit in your toaster oven, so when the parents are out for the evening, adolescents or older children may quickly prepare a pie for an after-school snack or an evening treat while the parents are away. They’re also quite adaptable. In the event that you have a few frozen pizzas in the freezer, you can easily personalize them to suit various preferences by adding additional toppings, cheese, or a drop of spicy sauce to fit your preference. While you can undoubtedly purchase frozen pizzas at your local grocery store, there are instances when the brands and kinds you want aren’t readily accessible, making it necessary to order them online. You may stock up on your favorites so that they’re readily available whenever you need them. Purchasing frozen meals online has its drawbacks, the most significant of which is that shipping can be prohibitively expensive because the items must arrive swiftly in order to remain frozen all the way to your door. These pies are offered in huge quantities in order to offset some of the shipping costs, so make sure you have lots of freezer space before the pies arrive—or, alternatively, make sure your oven is warmed and ready to cook for a large group of people. What We Appreciate The crust is perfectly crisp all the way through.
  • It is comparable to a pizza from a restaurant.
  • Packaging is kept to a minimum.
    What We Don’t Like

  • Could easily be a single serving
  • It’s true that finding a frozen pizza that can compete with an in-restaurant pizza is tough, but this one gets as near as we could find to doing so. Instead of being packaged in a box, the pizza is offered in a clear vacuum-sealed-like wrapping, which allows you to see the handcrafted, rustic-looking dough as well as ample pieces of fresh mozzarella and freshly chopped basil. It takes only a couple of minutes in the oven to produce an excellent-quality pie with a crisp crust (something that is tough to achieve when reheating frozen pizza! ). The pie itself is little, but we wouldn’t mind stocking up on many of them because the minimal packaging allows it to fit more readily in a filled freezer than a box of the same size. If you want to have a variety of tastes on hand, Roberta’s also provides a ″Baby Sinclair″ flavor, which is made with kale, garlic, and chili peppers. ″Using a really hot oven to cook frozen pizza is my preferred method of preparing it. It is wrong to defy the rules, but is it wrong to ignore the rules? I also like to top my dishes with more cheese because I’m a cheese addict.″ — Heather Ramsdell, Editorial Director, The New York Times What We Like Ships from Chicago
  • What We Don’t
  • Excellent client service
  • a flavorful sauce and cheese mixture
    What We Don’t Like

  • A bit small for a deep-dish pizza
  • These are true deep dish pizzas from from Chicago, and they are ready to be baked right in your oven. This combo comprises six cheese pizzas and six pepperoni pizzas
  • however, alternative combinations, as well as less pizzas, are also available
  • still, we believe the 6-pizza choice is the most cost-effective option. The pizzas have a 9-inch diameter, which is smaller than regular frozen pizzas, but the thickness more than makes up for the difference. When you order these, they will be shipped on the following available Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday for delivery in two days, ensuring that they arrive frozen and ready to store in the refrigerator. A pizza dish made of aluminum is included for baking the pizza, however several users reported that they used a heavier pizza pan instead, which they believed created even better crust results. When compared to traditional pizza, deep dish has a unique flavor profile as well an intriguing history. We can tell you all you need to know so that you can impress your friends at the next pizza party. What Our Professionals Have to Say ″Turn off the grill and let your pizza to get to room temperature before putting it on.″ Also, I would caution you to exercise caution when grilling pizza because it is quite simple to burn a pizza on the grill. Frank Linn, owner/chef of Frankly Pizza in Kensington, Maryland, argues that having a wood-fired grill (such as the Green Egg) would be good since it would lend a smokey taste to the dish. What We Like is that it cooks rapidly.
  • Diabetic-friendly
  • delectably flavorful
  • Nutrisystem may not be the first name that springs to mind when you hear the phrase ″frozen pizza,″ but the company is a frozen food industry veteran. Among the variations included in this three-pack are Italian Sausage and Turkey Pepperoni Pizza, Chicken and Bacon Ranch Pizza, a Pepperoni Pizza Melt, and a Pepperoni Pizza Melt Melt. Several reviewers have stated that the pizzas and melts are really savory, while others have stated that they like to top their pizzas with more of their own creations. If those flavors don’t appeal to you, Nutrisystem offers a variety of different pizza varieties as an alternative. In the event that you prefer to order them separately, they are little pizzas with a diameter of less than 6 inches. What We Like: It cooks quickly and is gluten-free
  • the cauliflower taste is not overpowering.
  • What We Don’t Like About It Those who like a more substantial pizza crust may find that very thin-crust pizzas may not meet their needs.
  • It’s possible to make a single serving.
  • The Caulipower frozen pizza line is a great option for those following a gluten-free diet who are also fans of the cauliflower trend, as they contain no gluten. Despite having a thin crust, which makes it more flatbread-like, this 2-serving (or 1-serving if you’re feeling really hungry) package bakes up crisply when placed directly on a hot oven rack when baking directly on a hot oven rack. Despite the fact that cauliflower is the primary crust component, it is tough to identify a particularly cauliflower-like flavor when eating this pizza–which is excellent unless you especially desired a cauliflower-like flavor in your pizza. That is, there is just the proper amount of toppings (sauce, cheese, pepperoni) to crust. There is enough to coat the dough and provide lots of taste, but not too much that the pizza becomes too heavy or soggy. We also love that it is prepared with turkey pepperoni
  • it is good to have a meat choice that has the salty-savory flavor of cured meat without being oily or overbearing in flavor. What Our Professionals Have to Say ″When it comes to reheating a pizza, I am a firm believer in using the oven or toaster oven, or even pan frying a piece or two in a cast iron skillet. Nice brown edges and a crispy pizza are the result of this technique!″ Frank Linn, owner and chef of Frankly Pizza in Kensington, Maryland, agrees. What We Appreciate a wide range of tastes
  • It is easy to prepare and may be freezer for up to six months.
  • It is too expensive
  • the size is smaller than other personal pizza sizes
  • it is too little.
  • In the event that no one can agree on which pizza toppings to use, this collection of six small pizzas might be the ideal solution. Each 8-inch pizza may serve one hungry diner, or you can divide the pizza in half and serve it with a salad or a side dish to satisfy two hungry diners instead. One veggie pizza with tomato sauce and cheese, one traditional Margarita pizza, one Mediterranean pizza with chicken breast and feta cheese, one pepperoni pizza, one Hawaiian pizza, and one barbecue chicken pizza are included in this assortment. The pizzas are shipped frozen and can be stored in the freezer for up to six months. Cooking is straightforward because they may be baked directly from frozen on an oven rack at 425 degrees for 8-12 minutes. What We Like: Making a restaurant-quality pie in your own kitchen.
  • Toppings that are delivered separately and that you may add yourself
  • What We Don’t Like About It There are no directions for cooking or topping the dish
  • Pricey
  • No shortage of delicious pizzas to select from in New York, and thanks to the rising popularity of mail-order choices, you no longer have to reside in New York to obtain a flawless slice of the city’s famous pie. Among our favorite wood-fired online options are Speedy Romeo’s wood-fired pizzas
  • they have a wide variety of flavors to choose from and, if you can’t decide on just one, you can ″create your own″ to receive a customized variety shipment–perfect for the couple or family who can’t decide on just one flavor. We tried the Margherita, the Truffle Shuffle, and the White Album, but you really can’t go wrong with any of their innovative menu selections at this restaurant. The box came by FedEx within 24 hours, and despite the fact that the product was delayed by three days from the time it was initially scheduled to ship (due to packaging concerns), it was well worth the extra time. When I received my order, it was still frozen and packaged in an insulated sleeve. They also included a couple of the pizza toppings (fried garlic pieces, cheese, and truffle sauce) in individual plastic containers so that you could add them yourself as a finishing touch when you served it. Despite the fact that there were no instructions given, the pizzas warmed wonderfully. It’s certainly a splurge option when it comes to frozen pizza, as the three pies set you back $119 (shipping included)
  • however, if you’re not located in New York and are craving an authentic, high-quality wood-fired pizza experience, this is a delicious option that’s appropriate for a special occasion or as a splurge for special occasions. What Our Professionals Have to Say According to Tony Gemignani, 13-time World Pizza Champion, ″I always search for independent operators that are selling their pizzas locally or nationally, such as on Goldbelly or DoorDash,″ he adds. What We Appreciate Allergen-friendly
  • crispy crust on the exterior
    What We Don’t Like

  • Soggy interior crust
  • It is no longer necessary to give up pizza because of gluten intolerance, owing to firms such as Capello’s, who are becoming inventive with alternative ingredients. Non-gluten-free, grain-free, soy-free, and yeast-free are all words that describe this pizza, which is also dairy-free. In spite of the super-thin crust, this pizza is more like a flatbread. It is created with almond flour, arrowroot flour, cassava flour, and quinoa flour, all of which have a mild flavor that allows the cheese and sauce to shine through. However, while the border of the crust was able to crisp up, the central crust had a more difficult time crisping up (even after following the box instructions to bake on a preheated baking sheet and cook longer). The package directions also advocate cooking this pizza, which gives you even more possibilities if you’re a lover of grilling and looking for a reason to fire up your grill. What Our Professionals Have to Say It’s possible to use any number of seasonings that you currently have in your cupboard! Fresh oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, or even garlic salt (which is a guilty pleasure of mine) are all excellent additions to any dish. In addition to fresh basil, you may use dried basil,″ adds Frank Linn, owner/chef of Frankly Pizza in Kensington, Maryland. What We Appreciate Pizzas are created by hand by Italian chefs
  • they are quick to prepare
  • they contain high-quality ingredients.
    What We Don’t Like

  • Expensive
  • This is not your typical pizza; instead, it is topped with truffles for an extra special pleasure.
  • Urbani, a company well-known for its truffle goods, provides the truffles for this project.
  • This particular pizza was created in collaboration with an Italian frozen pizza firm, and it’s great for a night when you want to treat yourself a bit while still being in the comfort of your own home.

What to Look for When Buying Frozen Pizza

Crust

  • Thin crusts, thick crusts, and deep dish style are the three most common varieties of crusts you find in a pie.
  • A great crust has a crispy outer and a chewy exterior.
  • It is made of flour and water.
  • If the crust is thinner than desired (crispier), it should be thicker than desired (chewier).
  1. These are also available in a variety of different flavors, including cheese packed, whole grain, cauliflower, and vegan.
  2. Thinner crusts often contain less calories than thicker crusts.

Cheese

  • Aspects such as stretching ability and whether there is enough cheese in relation to the sauce are debatably important considerations while preparing this dish.
  • However, the cheese flavor shouldn’t be overpowering, nor should it be mild in comparison to the sauce flavor.
  • A pizza topped with a combination of two or more cheeses could be a good choice for cheese lovers, so keep that in mind while ordering.

Sauce

A typical tomato sauce should be acidic, fresh-tasting, and not too sweet; else, it will taste bland. It should also not overpower the cheese, or else you’ll wind up with a greasy, sloppy pizza. If you pick a pizza that is topped with a strong cheese or a combination of cheeses, you’ll want a sauce that is powerful enough to stand up to the tastes of the cheeses.

FAQs

Can other toppings be added to a frozen pizza?

Add some more cheese or other toppings to your pizza, such as fresh chopped peppers, onions, mushrooms, chicken, spinach, tomatoes, pepperoni, ham, sausage, or whatever else you like on it.

Should you use a pizza stone when cooking a frozen pizza?

Not only will using a pizza stone—or, if you don’t have one, a baking sheet—as a base for your pizza help to make the crust crispy, but it will also make getting the pizza into and out of the oven much simpler.

Can you cook frozen pizza in other ways besides the oven?

Cooking a frozen pizza does not necessitate the use of an oven. Use an air fryer, a barbecue, or even a smoker to prepare this dish.

The 8 Best Pizza Peels of 2022

  1. Learn more about our methodology, which includes independent investigation, testing, and assessment of the top goods before making recommendations. If you make a purchase after clicking on one of our links, we may receive a commission. It is necessary to bake a handmade pizza directly on a preheated surface in order to get the perfect, crisp crust (ideally a pizza stone or baking steel). Transferring a thin sheet of uncooked dough into and out of a hot oven without the proper equipment, on the other hand, is a difficult task. It’s quite simple to burn yourself or to completely destroy all of the hard work you’ve put into molding it—or even worse, to do both. You’ve undoubtedly seen pizza parlor professionals transport pizzas from their work station to an oven and back again, utilizing long-handled, paddle-shaped instruments to accomplish this. Fortunately, smaller versions of these useful tools, which are also known as ″pizza peels,″ are now available for use by both amateur cooks and professional chefs. The majority of pizza peels are either constructed of wood or metal, and each material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. A wood peel has the advantage of sticking to raw dough less and being cold to the touch. Furthermore, wooden peels allow you to slice your baked pie straight on top of them, but they are also heavier, thicker, and more difficult to clean. While metal peels are thin enough to smoothly glide between a pizza and a stone, they are also lightweight and robust. However, they cannot be used for slicing or serving, and they are more prone to rusting and warping. They also tend to adhere more to raw dough than other types of peel. This is why the vast majority of devoted home pizza cooks recommend that you purchase at least two pizza peels if you want to make pizza on a regular basis: one wooden peel for sliding pies into the oven and one metal peel for carefully removing them from the oven once they’re done cooking. This list of the finest pizza peels for your kitchen is ideal whether you’re a self-proclaimed pizzaiolo or simply seeking for a safe way to cook your pizza. What We Appreciate It is simple for new users

  3. Peel may be washed in the dishwasher.

  • The unique form of this baking peel makes it simple to transfer pizzas, bread, and even complicated latticed pie crusts without straining or distorting their shape during the transfer process.
