    1. Since all of our favorite sushi places have been closed for the past three months, Barclay and I have developed a routine of cooking a large batch of handmade maki rolls here once a week for ourselves.
    2. (Sushi Sundays are a must!) And I have to admit, it has been quite enjoyable!
    3. Our sushi is normally made with a few simple ingredients and a sprinkling of spicy mayo, since we aim to keep things as simple as possible around here.
    4. Although these basic rolls have completely satiated our sushi cravings throughout these weeks of being stuck at home, we would not recommend them.
    5. We’ve discovered that we can create a large batch of cookies in about 30 minutes now that we’ve gotten our assembly-line procedure down pat.

    1. Let me first acknowledge that our skills for producing maki rolls are not really authentic or traditional in the sense that they were taught to us.
    2. This recipe, on the other hand, works really well for us since we just use the equipment that we already have and keep our ingredient list to a bare minimum.

    4. I thought I’d provide a brief video on how we make homemade sushi in our home, in case you’re craving your favorite restaurant sushi as much as I am!
    5. It is not difficult to create this dish, but it does need a little additional time to prepare all of the ingredients as well as to make the maki rolls.
    6. Having a companion (or in my case, a very passionate sushi-loving spouse) to assist you in the kitchen may make the process go much more quickly and efficiently.

    Maki Roll Ingredients:

    • First and foremost, let’s talk about the component! Unless you’re looking for fresh fruit or fresh seafood, the majority of the items you’ll need to make basic maki rolls can be found in the Southeast Asian area of your local supermarket. Alternatively, if you don’t have any, you may completely acquire them online. Purchase sushi ingredients in bulk if you intend to make a large quantity of sushi or if you intend to make sushi on an irregular basis. (If you intend to make a large quantity of sushi or if you intend to make sushi on an irregular basis, purchasing the rice, nori, soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi paste in bulk will save you money.) Here’s everything you’ll need to get started: Sushi rice is a kind of rice that is used for sushi. Earlier this week, I published a comprehensive guide on how to create classic sticky sushi rice, which you can see here (using Japanese short-grain white rice, rice vinegar, sugar and salt). There are a plethora of possibilities here
    • Toss with spicy mayo (optional): I usually like to add a touch of spicy mayo to my sushi (either drizzled on top or mixed among the contents), which can be created easily with mayonnaise and Sriracha.
    • Soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi paste are among the ingredients.
    • The typical trio of elements for a meal’s main course.

    Equipment:

    When it comes to sushi equipment, we are, to be honest, a little bit of a no-frills bunch at our house.A long time ago, we didn’t even use a sushi mat, instead simply rolling the sushi with our hands.This method is perfectly acceptable; but, your sushi rolls will not be as tightly rolled.In other words, if this is your first time preparing sushi, don’t feel under any obligation to acquire an excessive amount of additional equipment.

    Simply using a cutting board and a sharp knife will enough.You will also need a basin of water (for dipping your fingers into so that the rice does not adhere to your fingertips).After that, if you discover that sushi-making is something you like and wish to do again, you may always invest in additional equipment.After everything is said and done, though, the first piece of sushi equipment that I recommend getting when you are ready to step up your game is a basic bamboo sushi mat.

    1. (We have a $7 sushi mat set from Amazon that we use.) It will assist you in rolling the sushi considerably more tightly and is rather simple to use.

    1. Prepare all of your ingredients in advance. First and foremost, prepare your sushi rice at least an hour or two ahead of time so that it has time to cool to room temperature before making your sushi rolls. Proceed to prepare all of your other ingredients so that you may have a lovely assembly line ready to go for your rolls
    2. then proceed to bake your rolls.
    3. Press down on the rice.
    4. Then you can start putting things together! Using a rolling pin, press the rice onto the sheet of nori until it is evenly distributed, leaving a 1-inch border of nori at the top of the sheet of nori. (See the images above.)
    5. Fillings should be added last.
    6. Next, arrange your fillings on top of the rice in a horizontal layer, side by side, and as evenly as possible
    7. Sushi should be rolled up.
    8. When you have finished rolling your fillings, lift up the bottom edge of the sushi mat and carefully fold it over them until they are completely wrapped in a roll, leaving 1 inch of the top of the nori exposed. Using the sushi mat, press the roll as tightly as you can to prevent it from falling apart. Keep the fillings in by packing them in tightly (but not too tightly, since you don’t want them to squish out!) Once more, dip your fingers into the water bowl and use them to soak the remaining 1-inch of nori on your plate. Finally, finish winding up the roll with the sushi mat until it is entirely contained, giving it a last squeeze or two once it has been folded up to ensure that everything is packed snugly in there. Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients
    9. cut the sushi into pieces. On a cutting board, cut each sushi roll into 8 pieces that are almost the same size as one another using a very sharp knife. Transfer them to a serving platter and top with a drizzle of sauce and garnishes. Drizzle the sushi with the spicy mayonnaise and/or top with more toasted sesame seeds to finish it off.
    10. Serve.
    11. Pour onto a serving dish and serve immediately with pickled ginger, wasabi paste, and soy sauce on the side for dipping. And take pleasure in it

    Possible Variations:

    • The best part about creating homemade maki rolls is that you can personalize your sushi exactly as you want it. So go ahead and experiment with different ingredients and ways until you find something you love! For example, you are welcome to. Fillings that can be used include: As previously said, we most frequently have a salmon (or tuna) salad with avocado and cucumber as a side dish. But, of course, you can stuff your sushi with pretty about whatever you want! Here are a couple more suggestions: Fish, shrimp, crab, scallops, and tofu are examples of protein sources.
    • Carrots, bell pepper, asparagus, sweet potato, cabbage, green beans, greens, and sprouts are examples of vegetables.
    • Mango, pineapple, and kiwi are examples of fruits.
    • Lactose-free dairy products include cream cheese and spicy mayonnaise (see recipe below).
    • Fresh cilantro, chives, mint, basil, togarishi powder, and fiery chili peppers are among the herbs and seasonings used.
    • Sweet chili sauce, eel sauce, and ponzu sauce are among the sauces available.
    • Make inside-out rolls: Cover your sushi mat with plastic wrap if you want to make inside-out rolls (with the rice on the exterior). Cut the nori sheet in half horizontally. Make sure the rice is thoroughly covered with the nori by pressing it down on it. Then, turn the nori over and stuff it with the contents, rolling it up tightly until it is sealed.
    • In a separate bowl, combine the spicy mayo and the rolls:
    • As an alternative to sprinkling the spicy mayo on top of the rolls, you may combine it with the contents before folding them up.
    • Make sushi without a mat: As previously said, we have created sushi without a mat on several occasions by just rolling the sushi with our hands. However, if you do not have a mat, a dry kitchen towel or a sheet of parchment paper can be substituted in its stead.
    • Make gluten-free sushi by following these steps:
    • Only thing to remember is to use gluten-free tamari (instead of soy sauce) and double-check that all of your other items are gluten-free certified.
    • Make vegan sushi: Just make sure that all of the contents are vegan.

    A Few More Tips:

    • Make inside-out rolls: If you want to make inside-out rolls (with the rice on the outside), cover your sushi mat with plastic wrap before beginning. In half the sheet of nori, fold the nori sheet in half again. In order to fully cover the nori, press the rice onto the nori. Then, turn the nori over and stuff it with the contents before rolling it up tightly.
    • Roll up the buns with the spicy mayo:
    • As an alternative to pouring the spicy mayo on top of the rolls, you may incorporate it with the fillings before folding the rolls up
    • How to make sushi without a mat: As previously said, we have prepared sushi without a mat on several occasions just by rolling the sushi with our hands. A dry kitchen towel or piece of parchment paper can be used in its stead if you don’t have access to a yoga mat.
    • Preparing sushi without the use of gluten is simple:
    • It is just necessary to substitute gluten-free tamari for soy sauce and to double-check that all of your other components are certified gluten-free.
    • To make vegan sushi, simply make sure that all of the contents are vegan.
    • Of course, if you want to serve raw salmon, tuna, or other fish as part of your sushi, you should make certain that the fish is of sushi-grade quality before placing your order. (This signifies that it is perfectly safe to consume raw.) You can check labels, but I’ve found that asking a specialist at your local grocery shop or fish market which selections are sushi-grade is the most convenient option. Many fish are now sold frozen, so if you buy frozen fish, make sure to defrost it properly in the refrigerator before cooking it.
    • Costs: The first time you make sushi, the cost of ingredients is generally the most expensive, especially if you are acquiring new items such as sushi mats and pickled ginger, as well as soy sauce and/or wasabi for the first time. The cost per roll will be reduced the larger the batch (or the greater the number of batches) that you produce. As previously said, we purchase our sushi rice, nori, pickled ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi in bulk due to the frequency with which we prepare this dish, which allows us to greatly reduce prices. In a shallow bowl of water, dip your fingers (which will assist the rice not to stick) and sprinkle roughly 1 cup of sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border open at the top. Apply an equal coating of rice to the nori using your fingertips, dipping your fingers back into the water as often as necessary to keep them from sticking to each other. Your goal is to have the rice cover the nori sheet in an equal layer as much as possible, all the way to the bottom, left, and right ends of the sheet. (See the images above.)
    4. Fillings should be added last. Place the fillings on top of the rice in long horizontal lines on top of the rice, piling the different fillings side by side rather than in a single large heap. If preferred, sprinkle a pinch of sesame seeds on top of the toppings before rolling up the sushi. When you have finished rolling your fillings, lift up the bottom edge of the sushi mat and carefully fold it over them until they are completely wrapped in a roll, leaving 1 inch of the top of the nori exposed. Using the sushi mat, press the roll as tightly as you can to prevent it from falling apart. Keep the fillings in by packing them in tightly (but not too tightly, since you don’t want them to squish out!) Once more, dip your fingers into the water bowl and use them to soak the remaining 1-inch of nori on your plate. Continue wrapping the roll up until it is entirely encased using the sushi mat as a finishing touch. Extra squeezes should be applied all around to ensure that it is nicely and securely compressed. Then, move the entire roll to a cutting board for further processing. Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients to make approximately 5 sushi rolls.
    5. Sushi should be cut into pieces.
    6. Using a very sharp knife, cut each sushi roll into 8 pieces that are roughly the same size (or close to it). Transfer them to a serving platter and top with a drizzle of sauce and garnishes. Serve the sushi with the spicy mayo drizzled on top and/or a sprinkling of additional toasted sesame seeds on top. Almost every grocery store I’ve visited has all of the items listed above, and some even display them next to the ready-bought sushi for convenient shopping! Sweet! Once you’ve stocked your cupboard with essentials, all you’ll need is some fresh food.

    Some of my favorite veggies for homemade sushi rolls:

    • Cucumber, avocado, asparagus, jalapeo, green onion, carrots, yuca, sprouts, lettuce, bell peppers, red onion, radish, and sweet potato are just a few of the ingredients.

    Pineapple, mango, apple, and pear are some of the most delicious fruits you’ll ever eat.What about protein sources?You can have everything you want!Because that’s what’s readily accessible in my area, I often make use of shrimp tempura and/or sashimi grade tuna.

    step 2 – season the rice:

    To save time and effort, if you don’t already have rice vinegar, you may get the pre-seasoned type to save time and effort.Simply season with salt and white vinegar to taste if you already have a bottle of rice vinegar or if you have white vinegar on hand.1/3 cup seasoned rice vinegar or 1/3 cup vinegar seasoned with one teaspoon sugar and half teaspoon salt will be required for the rice quantities shown above.Pour the sauce over your rice and fluff with a fork before tasting it.

    Season with salt and sugar to taste.Remove the rice from the heat, transfer it to a bowl, and cover it with a paper towel to keep it warm.

    step 3 – julienne your veggies:

    Prepare your vegetables while the rice is cooking and cooling. Set the matchsticks aside after slicing them vertically. You’ll be ready to go as soon as the rice is finished!

    step 4 – wrap it up:

    Wrapping your bamboo mat in plastic wrap can help you prevent a sloppy clean-up and cleaning. Remove the nori sheet from the top and get your rice!

    step 5 – inside-out or outside-in:

    There are two most popular methods of making sushi: inside-out rolls with rice on the exterior and nori on the inside, and rolls wrapped in nori on the outside and rice on the inside.Due to the fact that it is simplest to produce rolls with seaweed on the exterior, that is what we will begin with for this homemade sushi guide!Take a spoon and distribute a thin layer of rice on the seaweed sheet, pressing it down firmly.If you’re making huge rolls, you may want to add an extra layer.

    Using a chef’s knife that has been freshly sharpened, cut into bite-sized discs.Wrap the sushi roll securely in plastic wrap before cutting it into pieces if you’re topping it with sashimi or avocado.This will keep everything tidy and orderly, plus it will prevent the dreadful act of hurling avocado slices all over the kitchen counter and floor.However, if that seems like fun to you, go ahead and throw away!

    I’m going to stay with the saran wrap for now.Afterwards, layer on your toppings (as seen below!) and prepare a couple sauces for dipping.That is, after you have stolen the end bits off the roll (they are always the messiest!) and shoved them in your face!We had a lot of fun preparing this handmade sushi, and we hope you will as well!

    spicy mayo:

    1. 1 tablespoon homemade or store-bought mayonnaise
    2. 1/2 tablespoon sriracha chili sauce

    Adjust the heat to your preferred degree, ranging from moderate to outrageously intense! If necessary, substitute vegan mayonnaise or plain greek yogurt for the mayonnaise.

    eel sauce:

    1. Mirin (Japanese white wine), 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce, and 2 teaspoons sugar are all you need to make this dish.

    Over medium heat, boil the sauce in a sauce pot, stirring frequently, until it thickens. (about 10 minutes)
