    6. Apart from providing clients with a feedback card at each table, you also ask them a simple question: what items would you want to see more of on the menu?
    1. Every client is asked, and after a month, you compile the information, and the answer is very clear: MORE SALADS.

    3. You recognize that, as a result of the popularity of your Baja Chicken Salad, your client base might benefit from other salad options.
    4. Even if your once-heralded variety is no longer available, you are now prepared to soar on the backs of your strengths with a new, salad-heavy menu that will appeal to your growing older and health-conscious consumer base.
    5. Your diner has gone out of business a year after it opened.

    When you consider the failure of your salad-heavy menu, you are baffled as to why a Sweetgreen would want to establish up shop in your neighborhood.You shrug it off and wish them the best of luck.However, here’s what they know that you didn’t know:

    • People who preferred different kind of dinners subsequently began to seek them out in other locations.
    • Your consumers didn’t suddenly go from wanting pizza to wanting salads; rather, you lost the customers who wanted pizza in the first place.
    • You were taken in by the seeming ″success″ of the salads when, in truth, they were merely the best of a bad bunch of salads.
    • Blaze’s client base was formed on pizza, so it knows how to make pizza well.
    • SmashBurger’s client base was founded around burgers, and as a result, the company excels in burgers.
    • Salads, on the other hand, did not help your eatery get its reputation.

    6. For the sake of swiftly grasping the very real-world problem that my friend Sean Ross wrote about this week in his great Ross on Radio newsletter, How To Have More Hits, I’m going to offer you 1,000 words about a fictitious diner.

    As Sean points out, the problem is that radio no longer has as many ″singles″ as it used to, which forces radio stations to rely on playing fewer hits more frequently in order to stay afloat.In reality, modern radio, in all formats, has been ″missing″ songs that frequently wind up becoming more popular on platforms such as Spotify or YouTube before returning to radio a day late and a dollar short in the process.When you think about it now, it’s almost impossible that a Top 40 radio station would play both the new Dua Lipa song and a new Bon Jovi album at the same time-but that’s precisely what a Top 40 radio station would have done in the 1990s.The following are the top ten songs played on a major market Top 40 radio station in 1997:

    • Indeed, even when more rhythmic music and hip-hop began to flood the charts, there was always a Tal Bachman song or a Shawn Mullins song to be found on the charts throughout that time period.
    • That’s as far as I’m going to go into this topic, which Sean is considerably more knowledgeable about than I am.

    • Fashion trends come and go, and the population of the United States is becoming younger and more varied.
    • I have my doubts about whether or not there are any mistakes of commission on the playlist.
    • However, today’s theme is mistakes of omission, or ″lost hits,″ which are items that were overlooked because they did not appear to suit the present menu.
    • Would you be able to hear a new Green Day song if it was released on the Doja Cat radio station?
    • Perhaps, perhaps not.
    • It’s a pizza that’s been placed on a salad menu.
    1. You decide to skip that Green Day song and replace it with another Bruno Mars song, or you decide to play the current Dua Lipa song more frequently to cover it.
    2. There is nothing new about these intricacies, and expert Program Directors have been balancing the ebbs and flows of playlists for years and even decades.
    3. What is new, though, is a greater reliance on the radio industry’s ″diner feedback card″—the listener database survey—as a source of information.
    4. The practice of asking current consumers what they would want to hear is perfectly acceptable and encouraged.
    5. You cannot be successful in any business unless you provide exceptional service to your consumers.
    6. If your client base is diminishing, though, what do you do with all of those comment cards?

    In the event that you are reading those cards, and you are actively offering more of the product those individuals desire, AND your sales are down, you have fallen into what I refer to as the optimization trap.This evil optimization trap is notably prominent in marketing technology, where A/B testing is widely used and has become commonplace over time.When our diner’s patrons were asked what they wanted more of, they responded salads, but not because salads were particularly hot at the time.They answered salads because we had already over-optimized the restaurant to accommodate the customers who stayed loyal, and we were not interested in hearing from the individuals who used to frequent the restaurant but were now happy nibbling on burgers and pizzas across the street.

    1. You may explain why Net Promoter Scores might be high yet sales are dropping by considering the optimization trap: you are making less and less people more satisfied with your product as time goes on.
    2. I recently came across a slide in a national listener database radio poll that depicted the preferences of ″Boomers″ on one side and ″Millennials″ on the other side of the spectrum.
    3. Despite the fact that Millennials are the greater demographic group, there were more than four times as many Baby Boomers in the study sample as Millennials.
    4. And, by the way, millennials are now approaching the age of 40.

    When Generation Z isn’t filling up your comment cards, your pizza menu will no longer be available.The optimization trap is a problem for all media that is geared toward an audience.You can see it on Spotify when Ed Sheeran releases a new album and every single track from the album makes it into the Spotify Global Top 50 chart.The evidence can be seen on the Billboard Charts, where the album by Future that debuted at number one is ultimately knocked off the top spot—by Future’s next album, which also debuted at number one.

    The constant optimization that data-driven marketing has provided us has also resulted in a decrease in our curiosity about those who aren’t providing us with information.Even when your audience is growing, understanding the preferences of those who aren’t listening to you is critical, because at some point, your audience will either pause or stop growing, and you will be faced with a decision: do I continue to focus on what my existing audience wants, or do I diversify my offerings?Or do I put something new on the menu to see how well it goes over with my present audience—as well as folks who aren’t paying attention?

    • Taking this opportunity once again to address Sean’s good point, ″Why don’t we have more hit singles on the radio?″ I believe the explanation lies in the dwindling Generation Z audience, but it is more complicated than that.
    • It’s just the nature of the audience, both those who are still present and those who have already left.
    • These are the people who like what radio is doing right now, and these are the ones that radio is progressively listening to, as the medium grows in popularity.
    • Salads, not pizza, are what they like.
    • But, once again, I ask, who doesn’t enjoy pizza?

    1. Instead of being fork-tender like their more popular (but practically flavorless) relative, the filet mignon, they are chewy and tough.
    2. Additionally, hanger steaks are located quite close to the kidneys of a cow, and they have a particularly iron-rich flavor that is not as well-known as that of the famous New York Strip.

    4. Cook it for a minute longer than medium rare and it ceases to be a steak and instead becomes a hank of rope.
    5. A hank of rope, on the other hand, was not the hanger steak I had that night at Les Halles.

    Fashion comes and goes, and the population of the United States is becoming younger and more varied.In that playlist, I have my doubts about whether or not there were any mistakes of commission.But today’s theme is mistakes of omission, or ″lost hits,″ which are items that were overlooked because they didn’t appear to match the present menu structure.Was it possible to hear a new Green Day song on the Doja Cat radio station if one was released?Is it possible, or isn’t it?

    1. The salad menu includes a pizza, which is unusual.
    2. You decide to skip that Green Day song and replace it with another Bruno Mars song, or you decide to play the current Dua Lipa single more frequently to cover it with another tune.

    • As an alternative, should I put something new on the menu to see how well it goes over with my present audience, as well as others who aren’t paying attention?
    • Taking this opportunity once again to address Sean’s good point, ″Why don’t we have more hit songs playing on the radio?″ I believe the solution lies in the dwindling Generation Z audience, but the issue is more complex than that.

    Earlier last week, the third anniversary of Anthony Bourdain’s death passed.My grief at his passing was profound, and I published this piece on the day it was revealed.The bottom line is that if your profession is about giving back to the community, whether it’s through a podcast or a Baja Chicken Salad, you’ll need three things, and those three things are what this post is all about.

    In my career, I’ve participated in around 500 focus groups.At some point, they all become a mash-up.Qualitative research is something I’m ″unconsciously adept″ at, and while the lessons I’ve learned are unique, the specifics of where and when I acquired them tend to blend together.A few of these evenings spent in front of the mirror, on the other hand, stick out as particularly memorable.I recall very well an evening at the end of the 1990s, when I was doing focus groups for New York City’s Z-100 radio station, which at the time had the highest weekly viewership in the United States of America.

    I was staying in Manhattan’s Murray Hill district, which was close to the focus group facility, and on one of my free nights in the city, I strolled around looking for a place to eat.On Park Avenue, I happened to walk into Les Halles.There were several people in the bar, which was a positive sign, and there was a vacant spot at the table.The offer was accepted by me.I was familiar with the menu because I had spent several years working in France.Bistro meal that is good and uncomplicated.
