6. Sicilian Crust
This type of pizza is sometimes referred to as Detroit-style pizza. Some claim that Sicilian immigrants brought pizzas made in the style of their own country to the United States.Especially prevalent in big metropolitan areas, such as the upper Midwest and the East Coast, this form of pizza dough is becoming increasingly popular. The dough for Sicilian style pizza is made with all-purpose or bread flour, quick yeast, olive oil, water, and salt, among other ingredients.

- The pan is also greased to produce a fried appearance on the crust’s exterior as well as a butterfly taste on the inside of the crust.
- The deep dish pizza dough in the manner of Chicago takes around 30-45 minutes to prepare.
- This is due to the fact that there is a thick layer of toppings on it.
- The toppings for this sort of pizza dough are assembled in an upside-down manner, as the name implies.
- If cheese is used as the top layer, it has the potential to become scorched.
- Semolina, cornmeal, and food coloring may be added to the dough in addition to the standard wheat flour.
- This is done in order to give the crust a distinct yellowish tone.
- You could choose to add some Parmesan cheese on top to improve the taste, flavor, and texture.
Onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms are some of the other toppings you might want to try.Ordering Chicago-style pizza crust for takeout or delivery will result in an uncut crust arriving at your door.If the pizza is cut ahead of time, the moisture from the sauce and toppings may seep into the dough, resulting in soggy crust. The pie will grow mushy and lose its crispiness as a result of this process.

- The cheese and other toppings are placed on top of the tomato sauce.

Traditional vs. Pan Crust Pizza

- The cheese and garnishes are placed on top of the tomato sauce.
In order to avoid the crust from becoming soggy, it is recommended that the cheese and toppings be placed over the sauce before it is baked. It should be fried and crispy on the sides and bottoms of the crust if done properly. It should be noted that in the 1960s, Pizza Hut popularized the pizza pan crust all over the world.
Thickness
It is necessary to cook the pan crust pizza in a recessed pan or cast-iron skillet. As a result, the crust rises higher, similar to how deep dish pizza rises higher than regular pizza. The conventional crust pizza has more room to spread outward than the thin crust pizza. So it’ll be able to grow without being constrained and will come out thinner than the pan crust.
Cooking Time
The pan crust pizza cooks in less time than the traditional crust pizza. The reason for this is because when the sides and bottom of the crust come into direct touch with the recessed pan or cast-iron skillet, they absorb more heat more rapidly. In the case of the conventional crust, the flat pan or brick comes into touch with the crust only at the bottom of the pie.The crust absorbs heat slowly, resulting in a longer cooking time in the long run.
Texture
In terms of texture, the classic pizza crust is thinner than the thin-crust kind.A soft inside and crunchier bottom are the apparent results of this process, according to the manufacturer. When making a pan crust, the dough takes up a lot of space in the pan, resulting in a fluffier and chewier crust in the finished product. If the crust is baked for an extended period of time, the thin outside surface may become crispy.
- The interior, on the other hand, will retain its sponginess, resulting in more filling slices.
Conclusion
There are a plethora of different pizza crusts available, according to the premise. It’s possible that I didn’t cover everything in this list, and there are plenty additional excellent pizza crust alternatives to consider. The key to picking the ideal crust is to be aware of your own personal tastes in this regard. So, take a moment between bites to learn about the different components of each crust before deciding which one will become your go-to favorite.

Nothing compares to the satisfaction of re-creating one of your favorite childhood dinners as an adult meal. This delicious Old School Pizza Recipe will transport you back to your elementary school days.
What is an Old-Fashioned School Pizza?
During lunchtime in many schools, large pizzas are made on sheet pans and then cut into rectangular slices to serve the hungry students in attendance. The simple cheese form is the most popular, however toppings like as protein and vegetables are sometimes included. This pizza features a thin, crispy crust and is frequently topped with mozzarella cheese, as is the case with most pizzas.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Yeast, warm water, sugar, all-purpose flour, salt, olive oil, tomato sauce or pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper
- Ground sausage and onions (or other toppings such as cooked ground beef, pepperoni, ham, and bell pepper) are placed on a pizza crust.
How to Make School Pizza
Step 1: Make the pizza crust & cook sausage
- In a small mixing basin, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Allow it to settle for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt, the olive oil, and the yeast mixture. Make small, quick, circular motions with a wooden spoon until the dough barely begins to join together.
- Hand-knead the dough for about 5 minutes, or until it is soft and elastic in texture. Fill a greased mixing bowl halfway with the dough. Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it aside for approximately 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size. In the meantime, cook the sausage while you’re waiting for the dough to rise
Step 2: Assemble the Pizza
- Place the dough on a large baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper and set aside. By carefully flattening the dough ball, you may stretch it into a rectangle curst.
- Poke holes in the dough with a fork all over the surface of it.
- Olive oil should be brushed on. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the whole surface, leaving a 14-inch border all around.
- Spread the Mozzarella cheese over the top of the dish, making sure it is equally distributed.
- Cooked ground sausage should be placed on top of the cheese.
Step 3: Bake the School Cafeteria Pizza
- Preheat the oven to 450°F and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the crust is lightly browned.
- Transfer the pizza to a cutting board when it has been removed from the oven. Slice and serve as soon as possible
Tips & Tricks for the Best Rectangular School Pizza
- Warm water should be used to make the dough: Warm water helps to activate the yeast, resulting in a light and fluffy dough. Avoid using boiling water, since this can kill the yeast and cause it to ferment. The water should be no hotter than what you would use to take a shower
- otherwise, it is unsafe.
- Roll the dough out thinly to get a crispy crust: To achieve the typical crispy crust, spread out the dough with a rolling pin until it is very thin and even. Keep the dough a little thicker if you want a fluffier, doughier crust
- otherwise, keep it thinner.
- Preserve the leftover pizza in the freezer for a fast dinner later: This pizza may be quickly frozen and reheated for a convenient and delicious supper on the go. Wrap the pizza in plastic wrap and place it in the oven to reheat until you’re ready to eat it.
Variations
- Pizza for School Morning: To make a breakfast version of this pizza, top it with scrambled eggs, bacon, bell peppers, and cheese.
- Put a Mexican touch on basic school pizza by using ground beef cooked in taco seasoning instead of the traditional cheese sauce. Serve with a variety of vegetable toppings, such as onion, bell peppers, and chopped tomatoes.
- Square A 14-inch square pizza baking tray may be used to make a smaller dish of this pizza if you require a smaller serving size.
- Pizza Sticks for Lunch at School: Keep the dough quite thick and avoid rolling it out too much if you want to produce fun, dippable pizza sticks. After the pizza has been baked, cut it into 1-inch by 3-inch sticks. Take a bite and dip it in tomato or marinara sauce

- Spread the Mozzarella cheese over the top of the dish, making sure it is equally distributed.
- Cooked ground sausage should be placed on top of the cheese.
- To bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and the crust is golden brown, follow these instructions:
- Transfer the pizza to a cutting board when it has been removed from the oven. Slice and serve as soon as possible
- It is possible to prepare the dough ahead of time. Allow it to rise for a few minutes before wrapping it in plastic wrap and placing it in a freezer-safe bag. Thaw the frozen food in the refrigerator before bringing it to room temperature before consuming
- In order to reheat leftover pizza, place it in the oven for approximately 5 minutes or until the crust is crispy.

- 3 Gradually incorporate the water and flour into the batter. One-third of the water mixture should be added. Pour some flour from the well’s wall into this puddle with a fork, being cautious not to let the well itself to collapse in the process. Following the initial mixing of the water into the flour, repeat the process with another one-third of the water, followed by the remaining third
- when done, a very sticky dough should have developed.
4 Knead for a total of 10 minutes. Hand knead the dough for 10 minutes, using flour to keep your hands from sticking to the dough. Do not stop mixing until the dough feels hard and cohesive. In the event that you’d like to knead the dough in a stand mixer, attach the dough hook attachment and knead the dough on a low to medium speed for 10 minutes.
- 5Place the dough in a lightly greased mixing basin. Pour the olive oil into a large mixing bowl and spread it across the bottom and edges of the basin. Place the dough inside the container and flip it several times to coat the dough’s surface with oil.
- 6 Allow time for the dough to rise. Put a plastic wrap over the bowl and set it aside in a warm place for 60 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in size. Ideal air temperature ranges between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (24 and 29 degrees Celsius)
- if you do not have access to a warm enough location, preheat the oven to 150 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) (65 degrees Celsius). After turning off the prepared oven and let it to cool for a few minutes, allow the bowl of dough to rise inside for few minutes.
- In a large mixing basin, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and water. Pour the olive oil into a large mixing bowl and spread it across the bottom and up the edges. In a large mixing bowl, place the dough and turn it several times to cover the surface with oil.
- 6 Let the dough rise for a few minutes before baking. Refrigerate the bowl for 60 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in size, after which it should be covered with plastic wrap. Ideal air temperature ranges between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (24 and 29 degrees Celsius)
- if you do not have access to a warm enough location, heat the oven to 150 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) (65 degrees Celsius). After turning off the prepared oven and allowing it to cool for a few minutes, place the bowl of dough inside and allow it to rise.

- 1 Crush the tomatoes in a mortar and pestle. Combine the chopped tomatoes and the crushed tomatoes in a medium-sized mixing basin, smashing them with the back of a fork. Continue cooking until the tomatoes are soupy but still chunky, about 15 minutes. It’s also possible to smash the tomatoes by hand instead of using a fork, if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty in the process. In fact, doing so would make it easier to maintain control over the process.
- After you’ve crushed the tomatoes, set them aside.
2 Heat the oil in a saucepan. Pour the oil into a heavy 2-quart (2-liter) saucepan and set aside. Place the pan on the stovetop and turn the heat up to medium-high. Allow the oil to warm up for at least 30 to 60 seconds before using it. Once the pan is hot enough, you should be able to simply turn it over and coat the bottom with oil without difficulty.
- 3Bring the onion to a boil. Stir continuously for several minutes, or until the onion is somewhat transparent, after which remove from heat.
- 4 Cook the garlic until it is soft. Toss in the minced garlic to the oil and onion and mix well. Continue to cook, stirring often, for another minute or until the garlic is brown in color. Remove from heat and set aside. Maintain close supervision over the contents of the saucepan at this stage. If you leave minced garlic on the stove alone, it will rapidly burn.
5 Mix in the rest of the ingredients. In a saucepan, combine the tomatoes, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper until everything is well-combined. Allow the mixture to simmer, stirring constantly, over medium-high heat until it begins to softly boil.
6 Cook for at least 30 minutes, if not longer. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer, uncovered, for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. You can cook the sauce for up to 90 minutes on a low heat. Generally, a sauce that has been simmered for an extended amount of time will be thicker and more delicious.
7 Allow it to cool. Remove the completed sauce from the heat and allow it to cool until it reaches room temperature before serving. In order to save some or all of the sauce for later, allow it to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container and refrigerating it for up to one week. If you freeze the sauce, it will keep for up to two months.
8 If required, blend the sauce until smooth. An immersion blender can be used if the sauce appears to be too chunky or thick; simply purée it until it achieves the desired consistency. Ideally, the sauce will be ready to use once it has been pureed.

- 1 Using a cheese grater, shred the cheese. Shred the mozzarella cheese into thick slivers with a box grater to make it easier to work with. Place the shredded cheese in a large mixing dish and leave it aside for now. Double the quantity of cheese and slice it into 1/4-inch (6-mm) thick chunks if you want an even cheesier sensation.
- It is possible to reduce time by using pre-shredded cheese, or to modify the flavor by combining different varieties of cheese.
- 2 Cut the pepperoni into thin slices. The pepperoni should be sliced into thin pieces using a sharp knife. The thickness of the slices should be between 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch (3-mm and 6-mm). Instead of slicing the pepperoni, you might slice it into little cubes if that is what you prefer.
- If you do not want to include pepperoni, you may leave it out of the recipe.
- 3 Cook the sausage until it is crumbled.
- Place the bulk sausage in a pan set over medium heat and cook until the sausage is browned.
- Remove the sausage from the casings with a spatula and cook, turning often, for about 10 minutes, or until the sausage is thoroughly browned.
- The sausage is purely optional in this recipe.
- You can omit it entirely or substitute other types of meat for it on the pizza.
- Preparing some meats ahead of time, such as bacon, will save you time and effort later on.
Others, like as ham, require just that they be sliced.
- 4 Cook the veggies in oil until they are tender. Fill a small heavy-bottomed pot halfway with olive oil and cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.6 cm). Heat the oil in a large skillet and poach the onions and peppers for 5 minutes, or until they are tender. Despite the fact that this recipe just calls for onions and peppers, you may substitute other veggies. The flavor of the veggies will be enhanced by poaching them in oil.
- Allow the oil to progressively heat up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit (90 degrees Celsius) before adding the veggies and mixing well. If the oil starts to sizzle or steam, it’s too hot to cook with. Using a slotted spoon, gently poach the veggies in the heated oil until they are tender, then remove them and drain on clean paper towels.
- 5 Tear the basil leaves apart. Using your hands, tear the basil leaves into little pieces. Do not cut yourself with a knife. Fresh basil may bruise if it is chopped too finely
- you may also experiment with other fresh herbs, such as oregano and parsley.

1 Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. 2 Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl (230 degrees Celsius). Allow for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 60 minutes of preheating time in the oven. Meanwhile, cover a pizza stone or circular baking sheet with a fine, equal layer of cornmeal or flour to serve as a base for the pizza.
- 2 Roll out the dough and form it into a ball. Using your hands, carefully spread out one circular ball of dough onto a lightly floured work surface, forming a flat circle. To push the edges out, use your hands to do so. In order to achieve this thickness, gently dust a rolling pin and flatten the dough until it is no thicker than 1/4 inch (6 mm).
- Another option is to stretch and gently pick up the dough once it has been stretched as much as possible on the work area. Place both fists beneath it and, using a circular motion, gently stretch the dough out even farther
- It is important to note that if the dough shrinks back as you are rolling it out, leave it to rest for 5 minutes before proceeding.
- 3Transfer the dough to the pizza stone and bake it for 10 minutes. Carefully pull the dough and transfer it to the pizza stone or baking sheet that has been prepared. Make any necessary adjustments with your fingertips.
- 4 Olive oil should be brushed over the crust. Oil the top and sides of the dough with a pastry brush to give it a light coating of olive oil. Use only a thin layer of oil to lightly cover the crust
- do not saturate it. The oil should assist in keeping the crust crisp even after you have added the toppings.
- 5 Spread the sauce on top of the dough.
- Place up to 1/4 cup (60 mL) of pizza sauce in the center of the dough and spread it out evenly.
- Spread the sauce to the edges of the dish using the back of the ladle.
- Ideal spacing between the edge of the sauce and the edge of the pizza crust is 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) on either side.
- Leaving a small amount of room should prevent the sauce from bubbling over the edge of the pizza and causing a mess on the counter top.
- 6 Finally, add your garnishes. Spread the cheese over the sauce, then top with the meats and veggies that you’ve cooked. Finish by scattering the chopped herbs over the top of the pizza. The outside crust edge should be left exposed for another 1/2 inch (1.25 cm). Add toppings sparingly to the remaining crust edge. The danger of adding too many spices is tha
